::Counselor's Office::
::0912 Hours::
::One Week before mission start::

The past week had been more than a little tumultuous for the ship's marine detachment, something that proved to be a double-edged sword for Akira. It had been a struggle to get in time with Rychard between her constantly being on guard duty and his responsibilities as a department head, but on the other hand, she'd spent just as little time around her pervert of a CO.

Just the thought of her bitch of a sister and the major was... ugh. So disgusting. For God's sake, it wasn't bad enough that she monster in human skin, but a freaking lesbian on top of it? This was just surreal. That counselor would have a field day at the appointment she was now headed to. Spec-freaking-tacular. She couldn't wait to be subjected to this woman's particular brand of torture...

Her patient was late. Maya had become accustomed to it at this point.

Her notes of tardiness become another scratch on the extensive disciplinary records of those patients who came through her doors.

And being late wasn't the worst offense. In the past weeks, Maya was verbally berated, cursed at, propositioned, and worse. No one had escalated to physical violence, yet, though Maya kept a weapon on her person at all times and was eagerly looking forward to the opportunity to shoot one of her patients dead.

In the midst of these thoughts, Akira traipsed into her office.

"Have a seat, Corporal," she nodded towards the sofa. "I imagine that in the marines there is some severe punishment for lateness - pushups, or running a few miles, or scrubbing latrines or some other physical nonsense." Her tone was a bit glib.

"In this circumstance, I'll only ask you to try and be honest as possible with me," she continued, smiling gently at the pretty young woman. "So... feel free to tell me anything that you feel is troubling you."

There wasn't much hiding how much Akira's trembling as she sat down on the counselor's sofa, nervously dusting off the cushion before assuming an awkward sitting position. She didn't want to be here, struggling through some overeducated Officer's idea of trying to help her. Spending time with Rychard would be far more beneficial.

"I-I-I d-don't really have a-anything to s-s-s-say, m-ma'am," she nervously replied to Takagi's first barrage of questioning. "N-nothing that's not normal f-f-for me."

"I suspect that you're not being entirely honest with me, Ms. Hayakawa. Regardless... do tell... What's normal for you then? Let's start there," Maya replied, neither bothered nor really seeming to notice the Akira's stutter.

Internally she suspected it was a defense mechanism, but Maya wasn't sure to what end. She knew enough about the history of the two women to suspect a variety of reasons.

Regardless she hoped the woman would open up. Maya recognized that therapy could do far more for Akira in the long term than rolling around under the sheets with the ship's pilot.

Akira took a moment to reply, unsure of exactly how to describe what normal was for her. The honest response was that her normality was to spend half the day getting berated for screwing up one thing or another on an hourly basis, then coming back to either her quarters or Rychard's too tired to do anything but flop on the bed and instantly fall asleep.

The only other activity Akira engaged in often was fantasizing about disemboweling her sister, information Maya certainly didn't need to be privy to. So, the nervous marine merely shrugged and responded quietly, "Oh, u-uh, just w-w-what the other c-crew has to deal wi-t-th."

"Unfortunately, the rest of the crew all have their own issues," Maya reminded her. Without breaking confidentiality, she thought it important to share some of the things she'd gleaned from her patients. "For example, I had one patient in my office who let his entire damage control team burn to death out of cowardice. Another may have physically assaulted two women on his previous ship. A third is a functional alcoholic who happens to be in charge of maintaining some of the most sensitive life support systems on this ship."

She shrugged. "What I mean to say is that no one here is normal, Corporal, and everyone is dealing with something rather unique."

"And no one else is related by blood to the lady in the center seat," Maya added, casually. "Which makes you stand out, unfortunately." The Counselor was privy to Akira's attitude towards her sibling, both the behavior she'd shown on board the ship, and the private thoughts that she was doing a poor job of suppressing.

"I wouldn't want to be on this ship either, under those circumstances," she continued. She'd gotten a glimpse of what went on in the Commander's mind and could only imagine what it must have been like to endure it for many years, as a child.

"However, what I've found myself telling everyone who's sat in that seat over the past few weeks is that we've got to learn to deal with the situation we've been handed," Maya told her. "I suspect some of your unhappiness is because you're still resisting being here. I understand why, but perhaps we can figure out some practical ways to cope with it... things that we can do to feel more comfortable here."

She met Akira's shifty eyes and held her gaze. "Practical things. Yes, we could have your sister killed, but those are the sorts of improbable solutions that aren't worth discussing."

She just had to go there, didn't she? The one person Akira didn't want to talk about for even a second. She hardly payed attention once Maya indirectly mentioned that bitch, both fists tightening as her mind wandered into the realm of sadistic fantasy.

"She doesn't deserve anything else," Akira practically spat after Maya had finished her idiotic spiel. "Any solution that doesn't have to do with her dead is one I don't give a shit about. And since that's all you're gonna give me, I don't even know why the fuck I should sit here."

"Well, Corporal, I was simply suggesting that we avoid the solution that lands me in jail, not that I don't consider it a valid option," Maya replied. She seemed utterly sincere. "Regardless, I only know one side of the story, so why don't you enlighten me about why we should conspire to murder the Captain...?"

An explanation? Seriously? "You need me to fucking spell it out for you?", she growled at Maya while clawing at the sofa cushion, "Oh hell, you didn't fall for the victim routine, did you?"

This was completely unbelievable, truly. "That bitch is nothing but a stone-cold monster. Oh sure, she hides under the 'poor me' bullshit. She whines about how mom beat her up, all that crap. She ever tell you about how she'd come hone from school every fucking day and slap me around? How she'd punch me in the stomach because I didn't want to drink water that looked like it came from a toilet?"

Now absolutely enraged, Akira shot up and began pacing back and forth in Maya's office, anger rolling off of her like a dam burst open. "Bet she never told you about how she abandoned me, alone, with an even bigger monster, did she? How about when she let me rot in an orphanage when mom died, and never even wrote back? Think she has any idea that  I got.... violated at least a dozen times, just because mom was pissed at her leaving to join Starfleet?!"

Maya sympathized with Akira. Her strong feelings were obvious, but Maya saw deeper into the surface memories that came up as Akira recounted her horrific past.

At the same time, she was pleased that Akira had dropped the servile, nervous facade and was finally expressing herself. She recognized that both of the Hayakawa sisters would have to stop feeling so damn sorry for themselves if they were going to become productive member's of society. The question facing Maya was - how could she help them get to that point.

"What happened to you was truly horrible, Akira," she said gently. "No one should have a childhood like that, not in this era, and not in the Federation." Though she was no real empath, Maya was angry, and the wheels in her head were turning.

She wasn't particularly sure how to approach the deeper issue. The fact is that Miko rarely mentioned her sister. The Commander had too much guilt for what she'd done and simply tried to block it out - like most of her experience. The two women were eerily alike, but that wasn't what Akira needed to hear right now.

Maya stood up slowly, so that she could be at eye level with the other woman. "Akira, I'm going to make you a one time only offer. What if I told you we can find justice in whatever possible way against all the people who have hurt you or taken advantage of you? In exchange, you'll have to trust me, follow my directives, and be patient. I know this seems like a Faustian bargain, but I fully intend to follow through with my word. I am devious bitch, but I am not a liar."

"Please say yes. I would very much like to help you."

Despite her ability to reason being heavily clouded by intense, primitive fury, Akira had a smidgen of interest in what Maya was offering her. She had no reason to trust a woman who declared herself a devious bitch.... and no reason not to trust her either, really.

What the hell? It wasn't as if Maya could do anything to her that Akira hadn't already suffered through. Except, maybe, death, but how horrible could that be in comparison to her life?

"Keep talking."

~Talking is a relative term,~ the Counselor explained telepathically. Her voice was soft and soothing, but she wasn't trying to hypnotize the other woman, simply put her at ease with the intrusion.

Maya sat down again and indicated that Akira do the same. Once she was seated, Maya continued. ~You're quite aware that the content of any sessions in my office are strictly confidential. The conversations that we have from this point on transcend confidential. Mention them to anyone, and I will find out.~

She reached across the coffee table and handed Akira the PADD that contained the psychological profile of Akira Hayakawa that Maya had been sent by Starfleet command. It was a laundry list of mental disorders - anxiety, paranoia, manic-depression, bipolar II and more.

"You've seen all this before. I'm sure you've taken some of the medications prescribed to you, and refused to take others. While the medications may have dealt with some of the symptoms, nothing can really take away the underlying pain," the Counselor said out loud. "No amount of traditional therapy can make up for a childhood without love or support. You know that, and so I don't blame you for not wanting to deal with people like me."

~I am proposing a more extreme treatment, one that is something of a double edged sword. We will explore the traumatic incidents in your past memories...~ she raised a hand before Akira could interrupt her. ~Using telepathic techniques that protect you from reliving the trauma, but enable you to identify the people who hurt and abused you. I imagine many of them still live on the colony. If not, we will find them. There are people out there, people I know, who take a particular interest in hunting down monsters. I will call in a few favors, just for you.~

Making sure that Akira was still following along, Maya continued. ~It will be up to you to decide whether you'd like to see these criminals prosecuted under Federation law, which will force you to spend some time giving formal detailed testimony, or leave it up to the discretion of my associates to deal with them. I recommend the latter, for your own convenience.~

~If you agree to forego formal prosecution, then I can also assist you in removing those traumatic memories, permanently. This will not alter who you are as a person, but those painful experiences will be... gone. Forever,~ Maya told her.

She hoped Akira was somewhere able to recognize that this process wasn't going to be fun for Maya either. The last thing the Counselor wanted to do was directly experience the memories of an abused child, taking on the heavy burden of reliving Akira's trauma to protect her patient. This was, however, her first opportunity to do something meaningful in a very long time.

~In return, you're going to follow all my directives in regards to your interactions with Miko. We'll work on other things until we figure out a way to deal with your relationship with her,~ Maya sat forward. ~Your sibling has strong sociopathic tendencies - she doesn't care about anyone except herself, and whoever she happens to be in love with at the moment.~

"If you haven't checked yourself in the mirror recently, Akira, you're not so different," Maya stated.

The mother was clearly disturbed as well - making it certain that some of these issues were passed down. Regardeless, Maya was convinced it was more a case of nurture rather than nature. And while she deeply admired and cared for Commander Hayakawa, in her own way, the Counselor also saw that Akira hadn't fully slipped down the path of darkness. Part of her remained wholesome and slightly innocent, and Maya felt compelled to help her.

"I'm asking you to prove to me that you are better than her. I believe that by working together we can assure that you are."

She reached over and took the PADD back from Akira, to check off that the troubled young woman was cleared for duty.

"If you have any questions, word them carefully, please. If not, I will see you in two days. We will meet twice a week."

For a minute Akira simply stared back at Maya, not really able to believe what the counselor was offering. Nobody had ever offered her a true solution for the pain, or to help get justice against the numerous people that had damaged her psyche. From a psychiatrist, no less? It was so overwhelming she didn't know what to say.

But then she played the next to last thing Maya had said over and over again in her mind. You're not that different. No. No, no, no. That couldn't be true. She couldn't be like her. Akira couldn't be a monster, not that kind of heartless beast. It wasn't possible.

How dare she even make that kind of presumptuous accusation? "She and I are nothing alike," the marine spat as she stood up. Enough of this shit. "I'll try your telepathic... thing, but if you ever tell me I'm like her again, I don't care if you're a superior officer, or a counselor-I swear to God I will beat the shit out of you."

She didn't give Maya a chance to retort, or intrude into her mind again. With that sincere threat, Akira stormed out of the Counselor's office wondering if she'd met someone who could help her, or just another source or abuse.

I'm nothing like her... I can't be like her...

Maya treated Akira's final outburst with the same nonchalance she granted the majority of her patients. It wasn't that she didn't believe the Corporal's threat - to the contrary she was slightly intrigued by the possibility of it coming true. That would make for an interesting moment, to say the least.

As for the Corporal's behavior, Maya firmly believed that denial was one step on the process of recovery. Eventually it would sink in, and hopefully motivate her. Maya only hoped that there was something positive on the other end of this mad journey the two of them were about to take... and that something good would come of it. She didn't want to be putting her sanity, and what remained of her career, on the line for naught.
