:: USS Renaissance ::
:: Sometime during Mission 2::

Ensign Dar Vox had been aboard the Renaissance for a little less than a week, unceremoniously thrust into the role of Acting Security Chief with the Chief of Security, whom he had never met, off on an away team.

Given the disciplinary nature of the vessel, being a Security Officer on the Renaissance was closer to being like the Military Police of old. They had the dual purpose of protecting the security of the ship, and enforcing regulation amongst the crew.

From what Ensign Dar could tell, the department ran quite efficiently, though they were closer to being a organized group of rogues than a bunch of clean cut cops. If someone was breaking the rules, someone in the security department knew about it - either through hearsay, rumor, or minor evidence. However, they seemed to be under clear orders to only follow up on the most extreme cases.

The worst incident of the week was breaking up a single fight outside of the currently closed "Dubliner" lounge. Some of the crewmen from Engineering had wanted to go inside for a drink, and the Marines guarding the door had made it clear that was against orders. There were a few blows traded before Ensign Dar and his team arrived to restore order.

Everything was going well... until tonight...

:: Deck 10 ::
:: 0200 Hrs::

When Ensign Dar arrived in the crew quarters on Deck 10, he found members of his team, and a handful of Marines had cordoned off an area of the hallway. Security Crewman Kim stood at the doorway to the quarters of Ensign Millam, of the Science Division, and Ensign Pender, of the Operations Division.

"It appears to be unsanctioned crew partying that got out of hand," Kim informed Dar. The young crewman opened the door. "Extremely out of hand."

The Ensigns' room was a complete mess. The tables had been overturned and furniture trashed.

Seated on the couch were Ensign Pender, Crewman Jonas, and Petty Officer Almeryda of the Operations Department. Each of them was bruised up in various degrees, and they were muttering quietly to one another, though they feel immediately silent upon Dar's entrance.

Standing quietly against the opposite wall was Lieutenant jg Biensinsmidt, the Assistant Chief of Sciences. The bookish human doctor had a massive shiner over his eye and a cut on his forehead. It appeared as if he had been crying.

Against the far wall, a Nurse and a Medic were attending to a body lying prone. From the doorway, Dar could only make out the blue trim of the uniform.

"Ensign Millam," Crewman Kim quietly told Dar. "In general terms, he had the shit kicked out of him. Medically speaking, they're still figuring out what his status is, but it's stable."

He looked at his acting Chief for orders. "We haven't taken any statements or disturbed the scene in any other way."

OOC: Feel free to explore this scene and situation, and we'll bring in other characters as necessary. This situation involves some NPCs who have appeared before in various capacities, and all Dar would know on the record of the "victim" is that he was confined to quarters by Counselor Takagi several weeks ago.

Dar was trying to hold his temper in check. One he missed what looked to be one hell of a fight; and two the suspected guilty party's where not separated to avoid collaboration on a story.

"Well first off I want everyone not processing the scene removed from it before they can contaminate the scene further. Make sure all suspects or witnesses are separate tell we get their statements, only release the witnesses I need to interrogate the suspects based on everything we learn. I need our best investigators on this helping me process the scene for evidence I want this done quick and right the first time. Your incharge of who comes and go's from the crime scene I want names and records for everyone associated with this waiting for me when we close the scene. I'll get started on the Scene once you have it free of unnecessary individuals."He didn't mean to snap at Crewmen Kim that way but he felt good that he didn't let his temper flare to the point of beating him for the sloppy work so far after all as a crewmen he wasn't that well versed in Forensics.

Once the scene was free of unnecessary personnel(the medics and Miller where untouched) he got to work systematically searching the area for evidence as to what happened and awaiting the Investigators arrival to help him.

OOC: you are the investigator, Dar!

Ain't no one else except for the various crewmen in the Security Dept.

You can call in the Operations Chief (Lt. Beauvoir) but that's about it.

IC:

"Ok. Everyone out. Single file. Don't touch anything, leave your belongings where they are," Crewman Kim told the men in the room.

"Shit, about time," Pender muttered to his friends.

"Please refrain from talking, sir," Kim told Ensign Pender. He hated having to address that douchebag as Sir, but such was the nature of rank.

Dr. Biensinsmidt kept quiet on the opposite side of the room and slowly walked towards the door.

Kim opened the door, and looked a the massive Klingon Marine Chief on the opposite side. "Sir, Ensign Dar has requested that all these men are escorted to the security office, and kept in separate holding areas until he can question them."

"You gonna solve this mess by talking huh?" Warrant Officer Kraal grumbled. "I can give you a guilty man with one minute in the room with any of them."

Kim cracked a grin. "Sir, I'm sure you are indeed a one minute wonder, but Ensign Dar has made his wishes clear," the snarky security crewman replied.

"So be it, human," Kraal replied. He took Biesensmidt by the arm.

"I... I'll come willingly, Mr. Kraal," Biesensmidt replied, but glanced backwards at the Operations guys, who had figured out what was going on.

"You're holding us again?" Pender said, incredulous, looking at Dar. "You've got some nerve, guy."

Before either of them could get into a fight with one another, Pender's fellow Operations officers intervened. "Easy, Pender, just do what he says," Almyreda muttered.

Warrant Officer Kraal was another reminded that Pender couldn't win this fight. He took the three of them and shoved them out of the room. Along with his team of Marines, the four men disappeared down the hallway, leaving Dar and Kim alone with two other Security Crewmen and the Medical Team.

Medical Tech Shannon stood up and rubbed his temple in concern. He spoke to the Chief Nurse Kora, a Bajoran, who turned to Dar. She was a tough looking woman, clearly a veteran of the resistance.

"Ensign Millam is stable. Broken jaw. Broken nose. Concussion. He'll be out of it for a while. We'll move him to sickbay and let you know when he's awake," she informed him. "We've got some DNA from his teeth and the blood on his face."

She handed a PADD to Dar, and smiled slyly. "This is far from the worst thing we've seen on board, Ensign. You're in the shallow end, enjoy it while it lasts. Welcome to the Renaissance." With that Nurse Kora and Shannon navigated the hover gurney out of the room and off to sickbay.

"Ok, Ensign, what's next?" Kim inquired.

"Ok, Ensign, what's next?" Kim inquired.

Dar handed the Padd to Kim after taking a brief look at it. "Place this on my desk with the records I requested. I'll be a few minuets looking over the scene for more evedance." Once Kim had the Padd in hand Dar pulled out a Tricorder and started his search. Nothing unusual for a fight like this but there where traces in the glasses of what they where drinking. looking to another security Crewmen "Crewmen have a doctor look at this data for me I want to know what was spiked into their drinks...." He bagged one of the glasses and tagged it. "See Crewmen Kim on your way out and sign that you have this evidence I don't want to lose it." He then continued his search.

Finding nothing else at that time he ordered the doors sealed tell the investigation was over. He then walked to his (O'Connell's) office and sat at the desk to review all the data he had. Finding that Ensign Millam was confined to quarters by Counselor Takagi several weeks ago, and the others records showed little that could help. he decided to call their CO to see if he had anything to add about any of them that would help the investigation. he hit the comm and called the Operations Chief Lt. Beauvoir to the Security Chiefs office.

While he waited he called down to Medical to see if Ensign Millam's condition had improved any. He also wanted to find out if they Identified the Trace chemical in the drinks and weather or not any was in Millams system. "Sorry to skip the pleasantries doc but have you got any more information for me regarding Ensign Millam's condition or the Chemical trace I sent to you?"

IC:

<Lt. Beauvoir's Quarters>

Jason was enjoying some well earned rest. He was to have three hours rest, Doctor's Orders. Actually the Doctor had wanted him to have six, but the Operations Officer, had haggled and they'd agreed on three. Jason had then spent the first hour catching up on his 'paper work'. He wished that Angela could've joined him, but alas, she and her team had to do routine maintenance on the secondary transporter system. So, once again he'd be sleeping alone.

He'd got undressed and gotten into bed and had just closed his eyes, when his comm. badge chirped. Grabbing it from the bedside table, activated it and said. "Reeves, here, what is it?" His voice was gruff, as he believed it to be one of his team, perhaps Pender, the man was an imbecile, he couldn't find his own ass with both hands and a map.

=^="Sir, this is Ensign Vox, the acting Security Chief. There's been an incident involving some of your people, could you meet me in the Security Office, ASAP?"=^=

=^= "What happened? Is anyone hurt?" =^=

=^="Sir, I'll fill you in when we meet."=^=

=^="Okay, Ensign, I'll see you in 5." =^=

=^="Thank you, sir. Vox, out."=^=

'What kind of incident would be bad enough to get me involved?' He asked himself as he got dressed. 'I just bet the Pender is involved, somehow.'

<Security Office>

Jason walked into the Security Office with a minute to spare. Walking up to Ensign Vox, he said. "So, Ensign, what's all this about? I'm under Doctor's Orders to be resting. So make it quick."

Dar looked up from the desk terminal as Lt. Beauvoir entered his office He was still waiting on someone in medical to answer his call.

Jason walked into the Security Office with a minute to spare. Walking up to Ensign Vox, he said. "So, Ensign, what's all this about? I'm under Doctor's Orders to be resting. So make it quick."

"Yes there has been a fight resulting in Ens. Millam's being in critical but stable condition. Ensign Pender, Crewman Jonas, and Petty Officer Almeryda I believe work for you and where involved. All I need from you is you personal take on each of them before I conduct my questioning."

Dar grabbed a recorder from the desk so he could replay Lt. Beauvoir's response and review it for each interview/interrogation. He also remembered that he needed to talk with the Science chief or acting chief to learn more about Ens. Millam. And the Assistant Chief of Science Lieutenant jg Biensinsmidt. what a mess he had here and this was an easy day so far from what everyone else on the Security staff tells him.

Jason thought for a moment, before speaking. "Okay, whatever happened, Jonas didn't start it. He talks a good game, but he's strictly a follower. Almeryda is usually harmless, though he can get a little violent after a few drinks, but who doesn't? I know I do." He'd read the Bajoran Security Officer's personnel file, so knew about his anger issues.

"Pender, though is an unknown quantity, most of the time his behaviour leads me believe he's an imbecile, but there are times when I feel that it's all an act and he's doing it to piss me off. Keep an eye on him, Ensign. If my people are responsible for starting this then I'd put good money on Pender being the instigator."

There was something not quite right about Ensign Russell Pender, it was a feeling Jason got from the man and he was yet to come up with anything more definite. It didn't help that the man's personnel file was extremely vague when it came to his reason for being assigned here. Maybe that was what made the Chief Operations Officer so suspicious.

"Now, if there's nothing further, I best get back to my resting, before the doctor, who ordered it, tracks me down and confines me to Sickbay." The doctor in question was a Marine trained, half Betazoid woman named O'Rourke. 'She not bad looking, maybe I should let her catch me.' He thought with a smile. But that would be unfair to Angela, he cared for her and he didn't want to do anything to hurt her. He may be a criminal, but he wasn't a cheater.

"Thank you that will help allot." Dar tapped on the Comm a few more times trying to get someone from medical to answer him as he continued. "I'll keep you informed on when and if your officers can go back to work....Shit Medical must be busy I'll have to head down there. Oh sorry sir It's just frustrating to get anything done around here. I'll Have to head down there. While I'm thinking about it do you know if any of them used drugs of any kind?"

Dar got out of the chair at the desk and walked around it heading to the door. "You can tell me on my way to medical then be on about your business. And thank you again for your help."

Oh sorry sir It's just frustrating to get anything done around here. I'll Have to head down there..."

"I understand, Ensign, trust me I do, but I won't bore you with the complexities of my job. I'm sure you have enough of your own to worry about."

When Vox asked if any of the three men took any drugs, Jason thought for a moment before answering. "Not that I know of. They've definitely never partaken around me, except Almeryda and his drink, that is." He followed after the acting Security Chief and said" But, now that I think of it some of Pender's behaviour could be attributed to the effects of drugs. Though you'd have to ask a doctor to be sure. I may like to dabble in a variety of disciplines, but the effects of recreational drug use is not one of them, I'm afraid."

Jason could see this wasn't the answer, the ensign wanted, but it was the truth. Deciding to change the subject, he asked. "So, Dar, if I can call you 'Dar'? What made you want to join Starfleet?"

Tag Dar.

"Interesting." the Chief Operations Officer said as they arrived at the Sickbay.

Instead of returning to his quarters, Jason accompanied Ensign Vox through the door.

It didn't take long for Dr. O'Rourke to notice him. "What the Hell are you doing here, Beauvoir? You're supposed to be in bed." She said.
"Is that a proposition, Hermia ?"
"No it bloody well, isn't. Now answer the damn question."
"Well, I was lying in bed and I was thinking 'Hermia's ordered this bed rest, I wonder if she'd like to come and tuck me in?'" He could see the fire of anger in her eyes. 'Best not to push her. "Actually I was contacted, by Ensign Vox here, there's been an incident involving some of my staff , and I'm helping him with his inquires."

Ignoring Jason, she turned to Dar. "Ensign Vox, We received your numerous calls and I apologise that we haven't got back to you, but it's been quite hectic around here." Dr. Hermia O'Rourke was trying very hard to stay professional , but Jason Beauvoir 's lack of professionalism always got to her. She'd met him when they served together on the Montana. One of the tasks she'd been assigned was making sure the non-medical staff EMTs ' certification was up to date. Jason was one of them, and at first they'd gotten along well, until one day he decided it was fun to try to embarrass her. Something he did at every opportunity.

Taking a deep breath, she said. "You probably want to speak to Ensign Millam, which is out of the question at this time. We've had reset his jaw and nose, but he is still recovering from his concussion, which takes time and plenty of rest. I appreciate that you have a job to do, but I have to put the welfare of my patient first. I'm sure you understand."

Jason thought this was a good opportunity to take his leave. "Ensign, it was nice to meet you, I only wish it could have been under less violent circumstances." He then turned to Dr. O'Rourke. "Now, Hermia, I know you're heart broken, to hear I'm in a relationship, but you must soldier on and try to forget me, it's for the best, bye." And with cheeky smile he was gone.

'Good riddance.' Hermia thought to herself. "Now Ensign, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Dar "That would be fine as long as I can call you Jason. As for Joining Starfleet well I've always had this dream of having my own command but my temper has been a real hindered. It's kinda funny I thought the Academy would have busted that out of me though as I'm here guess not."

They entered Medical to find a vary angry Doctor well angry at Jason anyways though he didn't seem to mind even egged her on a little.

Ignoring Jason, she turned to Dar. "Ensign Vox, We received your numerous calls and I apologise that we haven't got back to you, but it's been quite hectic around here." Dar "I understand Dr. O'Rourke though I'm just in to see if anyone had the time to analyze the residue found in their drinking glasses It may help your efforts in stabilizing Ens. Millam as well knowing what was ingested by both Ens. Millam and my suspects."

Jason took that moment to take his leave but not before egging the Doc on some more.

'Good riddance.' Hermia thought to herself. "Now Ensign, is there anything else I can help you with?"

Dar "Just that Analysis of the chemical Residue they all ingested with their drinks before Ens. Millam was injured. Like I said I feel it will help us both in our tasks to know what they where taking." He was trying to stay professional only wanting to get all the facts before continuing his investigation.

The Chief Nurse, middle aged Bajoran Kora Zin, entered sickbay along with Crewman Kim.

"Sleeping beauty woke up," Nurse Kora explained, referring to Millam who they could hear ranting and raving in the other room. "Permission to give him another heavy dose of sedatives, Doctor?"

Kim looked to Ensign Dar. "Perhaps we could question him now."

"He's in no condition for that, as you can hear," the Nurse explained, glaring at Crewman Kim while waiting for word from O'Rourke.

The Medical Officer nodded. "Go ahead, Kora, but a medium dose. 15 ccs is enough. We want him to wake up in good time."

The Nurse headed off to perform this task, and Crewman Kim stood behind her incase Ensign Millam put up any resistance to being sedated.

"As for whatever residue you noticed in Ensign Pender's drink," Doctor O'Rourke began, "It was prescribed medication, which he shouldn't have consumed with alcohol. But then again, they shouldn't have been drinking alcohol to begin with?"

As Dar started to inquire further. "To go further into the nature of the medication, or what is was treating, is a violation of the patient's confidentiality. Furthermore, you'd have to talk to Chief Counselor Takagi, and she's been off the ship for weeks."

Dar was hoping for more but understood the Doctor's position. "That's fine just let me know when Ens. Millam can give a statement as to what happened. An thanks for your time Dr. O'Rourke." Dar then looked to Crewmen Kim "Go ahead and stay on hand here Crewmen Kim in case Ens Millam get's violent." Dar then left the Infirmary and headed to the brig to inform the brig officer on the order of interviews.

Reaching the brig Dar talked to the Brig officer and pointed at the suspects in turn then went back to the Security Chiefs office and awaited the first Interview to begin....A few minutes later Ens. Pender was ushered into the office.

Dar-"Have a seat Ens. Pender I hope you've had time to calm down so we can talk. When I'm done with you I'll release you to your quarters tell we determine what happened so relax anger and nervousness just make you look guilty." Dar wanted this to be civil but also knew Pender had done something wrong with mixing his med's with alcohol and seeing as they where from the counselor he could guess it had someting to do with mental health. Know was the time to get him to tell the truth and maybe offer something helpful to the case before letting him go.

Dar-"I've already talked with Lt. Beauvoir informing him of the situation. He tells me some interesting things about you. But to the point why don't you tell me what happened in there. What do you remember?"

"Have a seat Ens. Pender I hope you've had time to calm down so we can talk. When I'm done with you I'll release you to your quarters tell we determine what happened so relax anger and nervousness just make you look guilty."

"That's how you want to roll on this, Ensign?" Pender inquired at Dar's suggestion og guilt. "I bet you'd get pretty angry too if you had that asshole Millam for a roommate. Hell, I'm sure I can make you pretty angry in the course of our conversation - does that mean you're guilty as well?"

Ensign Dar, however much he might have wanted to, wasn't drawn in by Pender's outburst and continued calmly.

"I've already talked with Lt. Beauvoir informing him of the situation. He tells me some interesting things about you. But to the point why don't you tell me what happened in there. What do you remember?"

"Well... Counselor Takagi confined Ensign Millam to his quarters two weeks ago. I mean, he's allowed to go out for recreation time and physical training, but not to work. He said it was because his department chief, Lieutenant McDonald - you know, the cute one - and her boyfriend, the XO, had it out for him," Pender explained. "Who knows? The guy is a real dick."

He shrugged. "Anyway - this guy is driving me nuts with his cabin fever. And I didn't do anything to deserve it. So I invite some of the guys from work over to play cards - give him some action social interaction. Jonas, Almyreda came from Ops. And the geek, Doctor Biensinsmidt, from science department. He's Millam's supervisor and has occasionally checked in on the guy. Biensinsmidt's a nice guy - but no one ended up on the Renaissance for the crime for being nice, you know?"

"We're playing for a few hours, and you know have a few shots here and there... and Millam starts losing and he gets worked up. He started calling that cute scientist, McDonald, a whole slew of names and all of sudden Biensinsmidt just smacks him over the head. Like a girly slap you know..." Pender paused, waiting for Dar to draw some conclusions. "Millam just launched himself at Biensinsmidt... I mean he would've killed the guy. It took Jonas and Almyreda and myself just to drag him off the guy and we called security and medical as soon as he was down."

Dar was more amused then angered by Pender's attempt to anger him. This was his job and work always made him happy even on a bad day. He listened very close to everything Pender said even though he was recording the meeting for his report later. When Pender finished Dar only had one more thing to try and pry out though it wasn't paramount to finding the truth as Millam should be able to give a statement soon.

Nodding at Pender to show he was listening and understood. "Are you sure that"s what happened? As I'm told you mixed your meds with your drink and I'm informed that thats a bad combination. Could have changed your view of things. I just need to be clear before I move on you understand. I'd like to rule you out all together if possible." "You know what they say not to take with alcohol? Aspirin. Anti-allergy meds. A whole list of crap," Pender replied. "You wanna get holier than though about it... half the ship is on some kind of meds since the Counselor is a little too reliant on her prescription pad. More than half the ship drinks way too much lounge. Our damn Captain is a mean drunk too."

Pender ranted a bit and calmed himself. It was clear he wasn't too pleased with what he'd done. "Is it the alcohol or the meds or both? Who the hell knows? We shouldn't have laid into Millam like that. But I'll tell you this - the kind of crap that comes out of his mouth, and the way he launched himself at Dr. Biensenschmidt - Millam is a god damn animal. He had it coming eventually."

The Petty Officer more or less told the same story as Pender. They'd dragged Millam off of Bienenschmidt, and when he fought back they put him down. He was certain the Ensign's jaw was broken when he fell, but couldn't say which one of them struck the final blow.
