![]() The Hawks' namesake was a Hawk-class mine sweeper of the United States Navy (AM-133)nduring World War II. Originally built in 1937 as the steel-hulled fishing trawler MV Gale by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Co. of Quincy, Massachusetts, for the General Sea Foods Corp., Boston, Massachusetts. She was acquired by the Navy on 1 January 1942 and the process to convert her into a minesweeper began on 8 January 1942 at the Bethlehem Steel Co., East Boston, Massachusetts. Renamed Hawk on 21 January 1942, she was commissioned on 23 May 1942 and assigned to the 1st Naval District based at the Boston Section Base. She performed general mine sweeping duties near Boston, Massachusetts, and in mid-1943 was assigned to patrol the Northern Shipping Lane. The USS Hawk was decommissioned on 1 May 1944, struck from the Navy Register on 16 September 1944 and sold. No records referring to her exist after this date and her fate is unknown. 451 years later a new vessel took up the name. The USS Hawk NCC-80558 was commissioned on July 15 2378 at Tranquility base. Captain Sean Renaud received the honor of being the Hawks first Captain. Two years after the Hawk's commission Captain Renaud was killed in Action during what should have been a routine planet survey. In 2380 Commander Andrew McCullough took command of the Hawk and was ordered to the Beta Quadrant, which would be where the ship was stationed for the next several years. In 2387 the Hawk was ordered to Utopia ship yards for a year long refit and in that same year Commander McCullough retired from Starfleet. In 2388 Starfleet found a motivated young officer to take command of the Hawk, however after a few months aboard he left the ship under mysterious circumstances. The XO at the time, Commander Ethan Hicks, took command until a replacement could be found. Major Sara Mattis soon came aboard as the ships Captain, but three months into her command, Major Mattis disappeared and left the ships XO, Lieutenant Commander Riles Morin in command. Under the Command of Lieutenant Commander Morin the Hawk departed Starbase Unity with a top secret mission to find and destroy an Omega particle rumored to be in the hands of a group known as the Consortium. After finding a secret research facility in the Sigma Epsilon system, located in unexplored space and controlled by forces of the Consortium, the Hawks crew prepared a raid on the facility. But before this could happen the ship was ambushed by an alien vessel and took heavy damage and casualties. Commander Morin was severely injured and unconscious. Lieutenant Commander Symon Drayson, the Hawks Executive Officer took command and ordered the Hawk to withdraw. After returning to Starbase Unity for replacements and repairs, the new commander of the Hawk, Lt. Commander Drayson prepared the ship for action and an inevitable foray back to the Sigma Epsilon system... |
