So this past week marked the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Screwjob, which, of course, was a big watershed moment in wrestling history. There's this movie that's about Bret Hart's career leading up to that point and the fallout that happened right after. It's called Wrestling With Shadows. You've probably heard of it. Maybe you've even seen it! Except I'd never watched it until yesterday. It's pretty darn interesting. And its on youtube for free. So if you're interested, here it is! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CpxEcev9_Lo Also, thoughts on said Screwjob? |

Wrestling With Shadows is a great program, but I could just be saying that because I'm Canadian and Bret Hart is obligatory a boyhood hero of mine. The Montreal Screwjob unquestionably changed the complexion of the industry. When you consider how badly WWE was getting its ass kicked by WCW at that point (WCW was poaching all the high-end talent with ridiculous contracts and that's why a guy like Bret was elevated to the main event and became "the" guy in the mid-90s), and think of everything that happened as a direct domino effect of the Screwjob, you can understand why. Here's a brief list of things that wouldn't exist if the Screwjob never happened: -The Mr. McMahon character, hence -The Attitude Era, and -Stone Cold Steve Austin as we know him today (no foil to play off of), and -Mega billionaire movie star/wrestling superstar The Rock (no attitude era so no reason to make his character what it became), and -Probably no defections from WCW so no main event careers for Chris Benoit, Eddie Guerrero, Chris Jericho, and -Probably no mainstream wrestling success carrying the industry through the early half of the 2000s, and -Probably no "PG era" middling television wrestling presence because the company never would have come out of the zany characters and eat your vitamin stage, and -Probably no WWE because WCW would have won the Monday Night Wars, and -So on, and so on, and so on. |
