Deveaux in Detroit

Jean-Claude was the enigmatic Samedi Baron of Detroit during the Nash Incident and is widely considered to be both responsible for the Methuselah's downfall, and for betraying both the Anarchs and the Camarilla by diablerising Nash in order to ascend to considerable personal power. Jean-Claude Deveaux arrived in Detroit at some point in 1963 having lived in New Orleans since 1842, and ruled as Baron in Detroit from 1972 until the downfall of Lucas Nash in 2015 when he transferred his Baronial power to a council of the three Anarch faction leaders.

Deveaux was a known practitioner of Vodou, a rare and deeply superstitious semi-religious form of Necromancy, who used his abilities to extend his influence and power through the use of Zombi (not to be confused with zombies) proxies, spirit messengers, and other mystic tools. Even during his time as Baron he generally kept himself to himself residing in his Haven and receiving visitors from among the Anarch community who came to him for help or advice. Politically he held significant power for his influence with the Camarilla was significant thanks to his cooperation with them, and his insistence that the Anarch community respect the Masquerade; among the Anarchs the bulk of his influence came from the glut of favours owed to him by the three major Anarch factions in the city.

Under Deveaux the Anarch movement in Detroit flourished, his hands off approach beyond insisting on the Masquerade ensured that he was popular and that Detroit continued to see an influx of migrating Anarchs, most notably the London Anarchs who arrived at some point between 2010 and 2013. Anarch territory was expansive and its boundaries were respected by the Camarilla, and the overall political and social situation in Detroit remained stable, at least for the Anarchs. Ultimately however Deveaux's downfall came as a result of the Nash Incident, during which he was variously labelled as ineffectual, a Camarilla stooge, or utterly uncaring for his subjects. In truth none of these labels really applied.

During the Nash Incident Deveaux cooperated with the Camarilla forces in hunting down the Cult of Nash and getting to the bottom of the nightmarish visions plaguing the city.
