Hey. Been a while since I've visited, I know. Not coming back or anything, at least, not at the moment, but I had a game I thought I'd suggest, if you all were still looking for something to generate activity/keep the forums going. Dwarf Fortress. It's gory, it's difficult, and it's insanely addictive if you can last long enough to understand the controls. That feature list is insanely incomplete; for example, it excludes the fact that because the game doesn't represent your dwarves as anything more than a 2D tile, it can afford to track every major bone in their body (including individual toes, ribs, etc), separate layers of fat and skin, organs, sections of the central nervous system, etc., in multiple states of disarray and adjust the capabilities of your dwarf accordingly. Oh, and that it will do that for every single living thing on the map, which itself stretches some hundreds of metres into the air all the way down to hell itself. At any rate, I thought you might like the idea of a forum succession game (explanation). A few examples of famous ones: Boatmurdered Headshoots Syrupleaf You can play through a year in a day, and you'll notice also that forum participation can vary from zero beyond comments of 'shit, why is my dwarf hauling rocks for a living? FFFFFUUU-!" through to in-character RP diaries developing an actual plot for the events of the fortress. The game itself is also tiny, can be transported on a memory stick, and will play on almost any computer, plus it makes great RP fodder and it's easy to get attached to a game when you've got your own avatar in it (In the first of those they only name a dwarf after each overseer, but in the other two you'll see that everyone on the forum can be 'dorfed' upon request, stating their preference for gender and profession if possible). Plus, there are an insane amount of possibilities for what to do, and, if the succession game idea doesn't grab you, there are utilities available that allow you to either view an in-progress game on someone else's machine, or else join in with it (though I've only done the former, so not quite sure how the latter works). If you're interested, here's a link to the best tutorial available (and no, you can't skip it. At all. Do so, and you will literally fail everything so much that you won't even know what's happening until an angsty carp pulls the pancreas from your expedition leader and, gripping it firmly in its' fishy lips, beats him/her to death with it. And no, I'm not exaggerating, that is something that can, has, and will happen): The Ultimate Newbie Tutorial And one to the most recent Mayday tileset: Mayday Green And one to the wiki page containing the other tilesets currently in common use: Tilesets Oh, and a final note. If you read as far as Syrupleaf, you'll notice that this game is extremely moddable. So, if the zombies in the vanilla and the masses more in the various zombie-attack mods aren't doing it for you, then you could always add in one of the Nemesis. Anyway, just my two pence. Like I say, I'm not returning at the moment (:P I'm sure you spend all your time moaning and wailing and lamenting my absence anyway), but if there's significant interest in some DF-activities, then after suggesting it I'd feel guilty if I didn't join in. Regardless, hope everything's been cool, though it doesn't look fantastically busy around here right now. |

Tried it once before. Confusing as hell. it's even worse then Nethack. At least nethack I was able to find my way around enough to kill some things and progress. but this! no way in hell I can learn this. it's just not possible. |

Yeah activity has been shit, especially with me. School is such a killer, but this actually looks fairly interesting. I'll give it a look when/if I get the chance. |

It's not confusing, particularly, it's just got a poor GUI for beginners. Like I say, one trip through the tutorial and the whole thing makes perfect sense. Even then, it's only about the first half before you get an intuitive understanding; the rest is just the minutiae of certain important bits, like the military. Regardless of that, you could probably run a successful game with about three people, as long as they each complete their turn inside of about two, two and a half days. And, like I say, it tends to generate interest in the state of the fortress and individual player's dwarves. |
