After they converge the Rivanna runs for about 40 miles and empties into the James at Columbia, Va. The Rivanna runs southeast through Albemarle and Fluvanna counties. As it skirts the edge of Charlottesville it provides fishing opportunities for anglers. The wading angler can find access at Darden Towe and Riverview Parks. There are five public access points on the Rivanna. Being a smaller flow than the James travel down its flows are best in canoes or kayaks. Because of the summer flows wading provides the angler with the best conditions. The Rivanna doesn’t give up the big fish like the James but is a great fishery offering sunfish along with largemouth. There is work on establishing Shad but it will be a few years before the results are known. There is a lot of History along the Rivanna. Thomas Jefferson had Mills on it and was involved in the Rivanna Navigation Company. You will notice old wing dams and locks along its path. Techniques & Tips The longer days have the smallmouth moving about preparing for the spawn. The fish are most active late morning into early afternoon. Fish areas that are near the deeper holes that have shelves which the fish will move up on as the water temperatures rise. 7-Day Forecast The river is blown out. Will probably be all week. |
