Kyra snapped at some vines. Stupid jungle, she thought, Stupid vines stupid jungle stupid Man! She glanced back at said man, struggling to keep up. She sighed and stood hands on hips waiting. He finally caught up and raised his hand as if to signal her to hold on for a second. Kyra huffed. "we can't wait Garret. The Imperion is after us and we need to hurry up." Garret looked up panting. "We can't all be Howlers like you Kyra. Some humans still can't run for several days on end." "Not all howlers can do that just because I can..." "Well," Garret said righting himself, " We may as well set up here. The platoon's going to be scratching their heads for awhile with the trick we pulled at the river." Kyra sighed but sat down by the tree any way. "Fine Garret." She move her dark blue hair out of her eyes and huffed facing away from him. "You know, Kyra, for a Delta you sure can be childish." She huffed gain refusing to acknowledge him.
We should be running while we have the chance. She glanced over at Garret cleaning his knives. She took her own 6 ft sword off her back and looked it over. It had kept her company in such lonely times, and here it was now. Still with her. She stood up.
"Garret, I'm going hunting." Garret nodded halfheartedly. She left the camp to go hunt. She paused listening to the forest. Such sweet sounds. She felt slightly bad for cursing the forest earlier. She glanced over at a small tree. She touched it and apologized softly. Everything is living, Her mothers voice cam back to her. She shook her head. Drawing her blade she jumped up to a tree. Using her legs only she jumped from branch to branch cradling her sword. Switching into a crossbow she used the sight to look out over the forest and the surrounding area. Well, there really was no surrounding area. She could only see forest and the small sliver where the river they crossed was. Satisfied she jumped down lower.
Sitting down she scanned the area constantly. Finally something showed up. Sensing prey her ears picked up and channeled in on the sound. Seeing a deer come she watched. She pulled back the string the crossbow loading itself. Holding it steady she waited. Finally close enough she shot it down. It was no epic battle, nor even a sound was heard but the soft twang of her string as it settled into place. She jumped down her fox tail waving in delight. It was the biggest thing she had had since the escape. Dragging it back to Garret she stopped. She felt a brush of wind.
Changing direction slightly she came out on a cliff. There she could see more forest but it was less dense. She actually see a few of the animals with her increased sighting. She saw deer and rabbits as they poked about. Then she saw the fairies glow slightly interrupted with that of the imps as their continuous battle went on.
Kyra sighed evaluating herself. Howlers were just a race among many. Like the elves and the dwarfs she was just one of the many people who evolved. She specifically was part fox but most people just saw her only as a howler as one might not differentiate elves between those of the sun and those of the forest. Only the elves themselves seemed to care. She shook her head thinking of Garret. A dryad, though only partially. His human part had been what had gotten him thrown in with her.
Heading back dragging the deer she reverted her crossbow back and sheathed it. Her boots crushed the leaves beneath them making sounds to warn any being that she was heading through. She thought she caught a wisp of something leaving but when she turned to look it was gone. By the time Kyra got back it was just getting dark and Garret had already started a fire.
"Not too big Garret. If they see anything they have to think its just an angry imp." Garret looked up at the sound of her voice . "Sure, sure, Kyra. What did you bring back?" "Nothing to fancy." She said slinging the catch down. He nodded and got to work skinning it and starting to cook it. Kyra jumped another tree to check on her pursuers progress while he cooked. seeing the thin wisp of smoke not unlike her own fire she nodded at the distance. hopping down she said, "They are still at the river. They are either waiting for reinforcements or still can't figure it out." At this she giggled.
"I still can't believe you grew us a bridge. And right under the water too! They couldn't see a thing!" He smiled at that. " I told you I've been practicing. Lily pads aren't all too hard now." They each smiled into their own thoughts as they ate their dinner. Burying the leftovers is as not to attract any thing unpleasant Kyra climbed back into a tree. "Goodnight Garret." Garret grunted in reply slinging his fedora down more so as to fall asleep.
Kyra studied the man who helped her break out for a minute. His half human side was obvious, with the fedora and the tunic. Even his boots seemed normal. But if she looked closely enough she could see his Dryad side too. His brown hair and eyes that dryads tended to only have. His small plant slightly curling out from his boots and from under his fedora.
"How do you grow those?" She had once asked but all he did was laugh in reply. Shaking her head to rid herself of memories before anything got too painful she climbed back up into the tree. Sighing she settled down and looked up at the moon. As long as we get up early we'll be fine. With those last comforting words she closed her eyes. Now sleep! She ordered herself. And she did.
