Big brown doe eyes stared up at him from across the town. Sephiroth looked up at the small gaggle of boys staring at him. Some whispered while others fled from his gaze but the small boy in the middle did nothing. Sephiroth stretched from his nap under the tree in this small town. Sleep was getting rarer these day with Shinra closing in on him. He looked up again to find the small boy closer, not even bothering to brush the blonde hair out of his big eyes he continued to stare at him. Sephiroth just sighed. He was used to it by now. They were either scared of his power or awed by it. Different sides of the same coin.

He closed his eyes attempting to go back to sleep though he knew only nightmares would haunt him of his mother and the one friend he has. Or had. That was yet to be determined. He felt a small tugging on his coat so he opened his eyes. Now this was new. The small blonde boy was tugging on his coat. "Yes?" Sephiroth asked voice light, hoping he wouldn't scare the child away. Too few people talked to him now that it was known that he was a wanted criminal. The boy looked to be gathering his courage before he spoke. "Why are you here?" The kid asked. Sephiroth sighed, disappointed. So it wasn't new. This was a question asked a 1000 times and he had answered 1000 times in return. "Do you want the long or short version?" He asked. The kid sat down. "The best version." Sephiroth smiled. Too many people just wanted the quick answer. "Well, then you better get comfortable."

"The best way to explain this is to start when I was still in SOLDIER. I had a reputation there. Everyone had me on a pedestal, expecting me to be great. Until I met one kid. His name was Cloud. He had just entered and was a greenhorn. I was looking over the new troops when i spotted him, practicing. I had gone up to talk to him, expecting the same scared position. As I went up I said 'Hello.' He looked up and saluted like I expected but there was no fear in his eyes. 'Hello.' He said back. ' You didn't call me sir.' I said. 'yes, sir.' he said yet still didn't show fear. 'Do you know who I am?' I asked, intending to finally strike fear, this was new to me, the courage. 'Yes, sir, you're Sephiroth.' I didn't know what to make of the kid. I was determined to find out as I left that day. I kept speaking to him trying to figure him out, but it didn't work no matter what. Eventually I ended up not so much as studying him but actually looking forward to takling to him. He was the one person I could call friend in this entire place. And I was proud to do so. Until one day 5 years ago.
