My nose twitched. I leaned over to see what was on the menu today. Carrots. Such a stereotype. I sighed, shaking my head and bouncing over to the other side of the cage. This is what I get for getting caught. I looked around at the small glass cage. It was almost time to open the store. The big man went forward and inserted the key. It got jammed of course, like every day. I looked around the shop for the first time today and the millionth time this week. All the creatures here were hanging around, getting ready for the onslaught of kids. Each one was exuding their magic, hoping upon hope that one of the many kids coming would be a witch or wizard. Animals got famous in that line of work.

All animals had a certain magic and each specific animal was better at one part or the other. Stronger than others even perhaps. The turtle was inside the shell, expanding the space inside so he could fit completely inside. The chameleon in the corner turned invisible. The fish prepared hypnotism, while the snake started to create portals. He didn't get far however. Owner, as we all called him, saw the guy and put him back in his tank. The mice returned to their original size. Goodness its harder to catch a flea sized mouse than how they originally are. Finally the door opened.

Kids came and went, and now it was lunch time. I got more carrots. I stretched a long white leg forward and scratched my ear. Maybe if I thumped my foot like that guy from Bambi, I'd finally get attention. Oh well, it was a horrible movie anyways. Everyone knows deer can multiply themselves not throw voices. I stared at my white fluffy reflection in my water bowl. No self respecting wizard was going to get a bunny as a familiar. I sighed again, resigning myself to my fate. But then something happened. A human with magic was coming in. We could all feel it. We all got a little straighter and got ready to demonstrate our powers. I started to recite my incantation for illusions in my head. The door opened.

My pink forked tongue flicked impatiently. Today was the day. Tuesday. I was always fed at 12:00 on Tuesdays. I bobbed my head, looking for an angle I could see through the door from. Footsteps could be heard out the door. A blue-haired woman, short but pretty, walked through the door. Her heels clacked on the floor. "Hey, Luna! We're getting another familiar today; Excited?" She purred. "I suppose. It would be nice to have some... Animal company. So, what shall it be? A cat? A dog? A bird?" I smiled at the last one. Delicious. The lady, Leah, laughed. "Ah, no." I cocked my head curiously. "We're just going to go with what feels right." She laughed. "So are you just gonna feed me now? Or keep laughing?" I muttered. She smiled, walked out, and returned with a fuzzy white mouse. "Here you are, Luna!" She dropped the rat in my excessively large tank. I nodded my head in appreciation, then got down to business.

After thankfully finishing my meal, I slipped out of my tank to explore the house. Slithering across the tile, I quickly moved to the den, seeking the comfort of its soft carpet. I soon found my relief, curling up under the couch in the comfort of darkness. I heard footsteps, traveling across the kitchen towards the door. Leah's husband, Dave, was probably going out on an errand. Sighing, I slowly turned and rested my head on my white scales, thinking of the time before my 'recruitment' into the household. I thought for a long time, and eventually, succumbed to the opened arms of sleep.

I opened my eyes when I heard Dave's car pull up. Dang, that thing's loud. Sliding out from beneath the couch, I made my way through the discarded objects on the floor and to the door, eagerly awaiting to see what he had done. He opened the door, and I wasn't surprised. Bags of groceries dangled openly from his muscular arms. He stomped through the kitchen, dropping off his load on the counter top. I sighed. "Wasn't exactly what I was expecting." I muttered, looking up at Dave. "Yeah, well, get used to it." He spat, glaring down at me. "Whatever you say, Dave." I laughed and moved on.

Exploring the ins and outs of my new house, I found the bedroom, kitchen, 2 bathrooms, the den, and my room. I didn't want to wander outside, for fear of dogs, so I was contented to stay inside. As I meandered through the kitchen, I caught glance of my white serpentine form. I was happy to be a familiar, but sometimes I wondered what it was like to be human. Sighing, I turned and just barely caught sight of Dave's back as he headed out the door. I wonder what the new familiar is like?

A man came through the door. Not what I was expecting. Everyone settled down. A man this old already had a familiar. He must be here for pet food. But he went straight past the food and towards us. He watched all the pets do their best magic, including my magnificent illusions of a griffon bearing down on him. He nodded and went to talk to owner. Everyone was leaning as close as they could to listen to his judgment. It must be for his wife or other relatives I decided. He came by and picked me up out of my cage. I was put into a brown box. And carried then I could see the sky. Then everything was dark.

I woke up to a slam and then light came through the holes. I sat as upright as I could in the box. Who was I to be familiar to? I wondered. What magic could I perform? I drew my ears back and waited. And waited. There was a thump as I was put on a counter. Great. I'm stuck until the wizard and his family could get me out. I tried to peek through the holes. All I could see however was a flash of scales and a white kitchen. Great, a lizard was here. I'd need to get the fact that I'm not food out of the way. Man, that always complicated matters. I sat down on my haunches and sighed. Oh well. I better make myself comfortable.

Finally they let me out. I saw he man from the store as bald as ever. Then I saw, what to be presumed, was his wife.Short and with blue hair she was a sight to behold. I finally looked down at the neat pile of coils beside me on the table. A white head with black eyes stared back at me. A pink tongue flickered in and out in an attempt to study me. I growled, a funny sight to the humans. I then turned my attention away back to the humans. "Very nice to meet you." I said. "I have yet to be named, but I am willing to employ myself in your service." "The owner said your name was Vanilla." I growled again earning myself another giggle from the lady. "Well, EXCUSE me but I'm pretty much not your average bunny to be named Fluffy or Vanilla. You can call me that if you wish but I won't like it." I said, all the while raising myself till I was standing on my hind paws.

I huffed, turned around and jumped off the table to go explore my home. "Vanilla, get back here." I paused and analyzed the new voice. Turning around I hopped back up the table and stood there, tapping my foot impatiently. The blue lady who had spoke looked me up and down. We have yet to introduce ourselves she said with a smile. "I'm Shelly and this is Dave." She said motioning the man beside her. "And this is Luna." She said pointing at the snake. "Luna show her around the house." Luna bobbed her head up and down then slithered off, not bothering to see if I was following. I sighed and then followed the ghost snake.

As soon as we were out of sight I looked at the snake. Pretty, but beauty doesn't get you everywhere. I decided to make the first move. "Let's get some things straight. I'm not food and I'm not going to bow to your will just because I'm a rabbit." The snake looked at me, and I couldn't tell if she was amused or just curious. Then she turned back around and started slithering away again. I groaned sliding a paw down my face then hopped after her. This was going to be a long day.

I turned back around with a sneer. I already hated this bunny. Was she taking my place?? What could she do? She's just a puffball with illusions. What could those do except act as a decoy? That's what this little 'Vanilla' was. A scapegoat. And that was all she could ever be. Thinking my vengeful thoughts, I turned sharp corners, weaved under and over things, even created short portals to lose this bunny. All she ever did was hop two steps, look around, twitch her nose, and continue.

After what seemed like hours of escaping the snowy figure trailing behind me, I finally heard her voice. A sweet, small voice. Ew. "Um.... You gonna show me to my room?" She muttered. After contemplating the first impressions I could offer, I decided on a not-so-nice one. "Listen, Puffball." That last word got her going. "I eat your kind for breakfast. Don't be expecting any favors." And, with that statement still lingering in the air, I created a portal and went through. Thankfully, this one was into the calm security of my bedroom.

Curled warmly into a little ball, I sat and thought. Thinking, thinking, thinking.... I shut my eyes. "Oh. Dang it." A familiar voice from earlier cursed under her breath. Crap. Crap, crap, crap. Was that..? Opening my eyes softly, I recognized a white figure in front of my tank. It was. "So, uh, they said this was my room?" Vanilla asked. I snorted. "They shoulda just put you outside." Turning around, I squirmed into a hollow log that always hid me away. Atleast, it was soundproof. Peace at last... For now.
