Italy still stands to its commitments with the Republic of San Marino. Infact that was not the issue, why the Italian goverment decide to decline the transport of Soviet arms through italian territory which is a legitimate measure by the Italian custom. Regarding to the soviet argumentation Italy should start a discussion about if a sovereign state is allowed to decline a transport through its territory! Of course the Italian State is! We have made a clear stand and we wont move away from this stand, that there will be no permission for transporting soviet arms through the territory of the independent state of Italy. Futhermore we still guarantee the existence of the state of San Marino. Besides we also guarantee a defense in war case of the state of San Marino, so there is no need for armament of the armed forces of San Marino! Signed! |

Does Italy as a representative of NATO acknowledge a sovereign nations right to defend its territory? In this case the right of San Marino to maintain a military defence? This is in accordance with article 51 of the UN charter. |

No member of NATO has ever questioned the right of a sovereign nation to defend itself; if the USSR requires such words in order to stand down, then our representative, standing for both Britain and NATO, hereby speaks them in whatever variety of tongues is required - English, French, Russian, Italian, Latin, Esperanto and Greek. |

Some comments of other NATO members could be interpreted to indicate quite the opposite opinion. Is the USSR satisfied with this declaration? |

The British position represents that of NATO, based on our senior position in the alliance. |

The USSR has withdrawn from the Italian-Yugoslav border (see this thread). Therefore Sweden sends its gift of weapons to the Sanmarinese armed forces and withdraws our call for a security council session about this matter. |
