His Majesty King George VI, Queen Elizabeth and Princesses Elizabeth and Margaret will travel to South Africa on board HMS Vanguard early next month, as the first leg of a Royal Tour of the Dominions.

This trip will be followed by similar voyages in 1948 to Canada and Newfoundland, Australia and New Zealand and in 1949 to India and Malaya.

The King, Queen and Royal Family will also visit the United States in 1948.

His Majesty the King and the Royal Family left Portsmouth today on board the newest battleship in the Royal Navy, the mighty HMS Vanguard, for their cruise to and tour of the Dominion of South Africa.

The Royal Yacht is expected to arrive at Cape Town in just under four weeks, and will be accompanied by a number of smaller vessels of the Home Fleet as far as Gibraltar, where escort will transfer to units of the Western, Atlantic and Mediterranean Fleets.

His Majesty the King, accompanied by the Royal Family, disembarked in Cape Town today to begin their tour of South Africa. The Royal party met with a tremendous reception, assisted ably by the perfectly sunny climes.

The Royal Tour of South Africa was a great success, with the King and Royal Family arriving back in Britain December 10th.

They farewelled the Vanguard with a certain sadness, but will be sailing on her again for the tour of Canada and the United States in the New Year.

Following the conclusion of the 1948 London Olympic Games, His Majesty King George V and the Royal Family will embark on a tour of Canada and Newfoundland, as well as a state visit to the United States of America, on board the battleship HMS Vanguard.

The tour to the Dominions of Australia, New Zealand and India will be delayed until 1949.

His Majesty is very lucky to get to have a ride on a Battleship, that is what I am sure many people of this era would hope for.

Either way, we pray for safe travels for His Majesty.

December 15th 1948

The Royal Family returned to Portsmouth on the HMS Vanguard following their tour of Canada and the State Visit to the United States, where the King and Queen met with President and Mrs. Truman.

The tour was a great success and very large crowds attended all parts of the Royal Visit, including a brief stopover in Winnipeg.
