Der Spiegel, May 2nd, 1949 With big celebrations the reunification of the Saarland with West Germany took place in Saarbrücken. Bundeskanzler Dr. Konrad Adenauer and the French president de Gaulle celebrated together the reunification of the Saarland with Germany and the end of the Franco- German archenemyship. After a parade, the first of the new Bundeswehr, President de Gaulle was honoured with the highest ceremony of the Bundeswehr, the Großer Zapfenstreich. In the Serenade the Marseillaise, the Deutschlandlied and "Nun danket alle Gott" were played. ![]() West German troops while parading through Saarbrücken ![]() Großer Zapfenstreich Critics came from the heads of the KPD: "That was a new militaristic and fascist movement to undermine the world peace." While the SPD did not openly critisize it, there were different voices. While the right wing was supporting it, the left wing wasn't. In contrast. The other parties openly supported the actions. "Such talks of nobodies can not stop us to make a close friendship between Germany and France." Chancellor Adenauer commented critics. "This alliance with France does more for world peace than all the other communists ever done or will ever do." Jens Daniel |

OOC: I finally found a better photo. And NO, that are no Wehrmacht soldiers. But Bundesgrenzschutz. The uniforms of the Bundesgrenzschutz were until 1976 very similar to the Wehrmacht uniforms. That's why I used this old picture as replacement as I did not find better. Adler |

The Wehrmacht parade through Warsaw had a much higher humor value.
