July 1949 In a surprising move Mexican President Miguel Aldez announced that Mexico is seeking admission into the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. In conjunction with this announcement the President also announced that all deals with the Soviet Union have been canceled. No reason has yet been given for this change of stance. Immidietly after this announcement the Mexican Communist Party annoucned that it will be holding a series of rallies to protest this change in foreign policy. |

Mid July 1949 Today crowds estimated at 3,000 protested outside the Presidential Palace. Not all were Communists. Numbered among the protestors where those who opposed the Presidents declaration earlier that day to send a squadron of planes to Europe. Among the many "Comrades of the World Unite!" signs, could be seen such signs as "Keep our boys home!", "No! To the Bloody fields of Europe!". The situation remains unstable, with further and quite possibly larger protests expected. As of today, no reason has been given for this act by the government, although rumors continue to abound. The Communist Party has demanded an inquiry into this matter, but it is unkown what will come of it. The President was unavailable for comment, he was last seen boarding a luxurious yatch in Cancun. |
