The Australian Government is seeking to develop the continent and provide for the future prosperity and security of all Australians. Of first priority is the encouragement of immigration, particularly from the displaced people of Europe and from Britain. We must populate or perish. As such, there will be assisted passage for those wishing to migrate to Australia, along with settlement assistance and guaranteed work. There is to be an encouragement of Australian population growth at home also, with a Family Bonus to be issued to assist with the costs of raising children. It will rise depending on the number of children in the family, and be combined with a government mortgage system to enable people to own their own homes. Education, health care and social welfare will remain areas of priority, with particular attention paid to the needs of children. The infrastructure of the continent will be developed: - a National Highways Scheme will seek to link all cities and major towns with 4-6 lane sealed highways by 1975. - Hydroelectric and coal burning power stations will be expanded to allow for greater rural electrification. - large areas of scrub will be cleared and opened up for farming. - A rail link between Adelaide and Darwin will be completed by 1960. - Trans Australian Airlines will be established. - the automotive manufacturing industry will be encouraged to expand, particularly Ford in Geelong and GM Holden in Adelaide. - The Snowy Mountains Hydro Electric Scheme, a 25 year undertaking, will seek to harness the power of the Snowy River - Commonwealth Research and Space facilities at Woomera will continue construction, along with a large airstrip and sealed road links. - The steel industry will be expanded, particularly in New South Wales. - Uranium mining and exploration across the continent will be continued at high pace, particularly at the Rum Jungle site in the Northern Territory. - the Hunter Valley coal mines will be expanded, along with the Mt. Isa mining complex. - BHP will be encouraged to expand its interests across the mining industry - exploration of the Pilbara region for mineral deposits, combined with mineral exploration across Western Australia, South Australia, Queensland, New Guinea and Bougainville will be stepped up. - single desk wheat and wool boards will be set up to facilitate ease of export for farmers. - Mechanization of agriculture is to be a high priority to allow for more efficiency. |
