October 1 1949 An Antarctic Expedition under the command of Rear Admiral Byrd has just set sail from San Diego today and is expected to arrive off Antarctica in late October / Early November. The Antarctic Expedition is expected to last eight months. Besides the flagship USS Adirondack and the aircraft carrier Valley Forge, there are thirteen US Navy support ships, six helicopters, six flying boats, two seaplane tenders and fifteen other aircraft. The total number of personnel involved is over 4,000. The stated claims of the operation are as follows 1. to train personnel and test material in the frigid zones. 2. to consolidate and extend American sovereignty from 90°W to 158°W on the Antarctic continent. 3. to determine the feasibility of establishing and maintaining bases in the Antarctic and to investigate possible base sites. 4. to develop techniques for establishing and maintaining air bases on the ice, with particular attention to the later applicability of such techniques to operations in interior Greenland. 5. to amplify existing knowledge of hydrographic, geographic, geological, meteorological and electromagnetic conditions in the area. |

November 14 1949 Construction of a research base has started on the coast of Marie Byrd Land, the research base to to be erupted with various scientific and meteorological instruments and a small air strip for small survey planes. After the expedition returns the base is expected to house 35 scientists on a regular basis. As construction began on the base Rear Admiral Byrd read a proclamation given to him by President Truman declaring and reaffirming the United States Government claim on Marie Byrd Land from 90°W to 158°W out to the 60° S parallel then planting a US flag. In Washington President Truman publicly declared the same statement. The base is to be operated by the United States Antarctic Research Program to be funded by the National Science Foundation. The research base is to include a small meteorological station. The main arm of the expedition will soon start its primary mission and conduct research into hydrographic, geographic, geological, meteorological and electromagnetic conditions in the area. An expedition is expected to depart within one to two months to survey potential locations for a future south pole base. |
