April 5, 1951 - Argentina Calls for South American Defense League In response to increasing world and regional tensions, President Juan Peron of Argentina today called for the creation of a South American league of nations. The alliance would serve to improve political, economic, and military cooperation among its member states, as well as to deter foreign intervention. In Peron's words, its essence would be to "reassure the people of Argentina and South America that we will remain free, prosperous, and independent nations.... This league will counter the selfish colonial and military ambitions of outside powers by providing a strong unity among Latin Americans for the benefit Latin Americans." It is obvious that Mr. Peron was referring to the so-called "Latino Union," a similar organization proposed by General Franco of Spain several months ago, which has since come under severe criticism by West and East alike for its colonialist overtones. Dubbed "SADL," the new defense league would be a major step forward in improving the international relations among Latin Americans. An international council of this order was first envisioned in 1949 by a pan-South American anti-colonialist group that has opposed imperialist adventuring into the region. "Independent Nations of Greater South America Against Colonialism," or INGSAAC, was formed in 1946 and presently claims membership from 8 different Latin American countries. Over the past few weeks, the political group has seen a marked rise in popularity following reactions to the proposed Latino Union. Diplomats from Argentina have been dispatched to nearby countries, notably Uruguay, Paraguay, Chile, Bolivia, and Venezula, to seek defense agreements. President Peron stated that if all goes well, a council of interested parties would meet at Buenos Aries in the coming months to draw up an official agreement. |

Spain welcomes this organization as it furthers the goals it has dreamed of in improving the lifes of people in South America. |

Interesting that Spain would support this initiative since the existence of two Latin American unions would effectively split the Ibero-Hispanic bloc in two. |

Indeed, but Spain is not trying to create an all reaching influence in the America's as you claim, it wishes to aid the people, and your organization does that, indeed why does being in one group stop you from being in another, why are you so ready to draw a line and divide your continent? |

We are not at all pleased with the prospect of dividing the continent, as you say. That was the source of our contention from the start. We would prefer a generally unified South America that would maintain the balance of power and resist foreign invasion, be it military, cultural, or political. While the economic aid that the Latino Union is proposing is indeed honorable, it inevitably comes at the price of acknowledging the overlordship of the donor. We have seen this repeatedly with the USA and USSR in their numerous puppet states throughout the world. Argentina has admired some of the advances Spain has made in recent years, but the possibility of that nation extending its geopolitical influence into our backyard -- especially since it is a NATO member (which could draw us into a global war) as well as an unashamedly imperialist fascist nation -- makes it likely that an alliance would destabilize the region. That defeats the very purpose of the organization. |

Not that it influences the argument, but we may not be a NATO member, NATO itself is having a discussion if we are. In any case Spain is not trying to get you to enter the organization, it is your choice, it is only upset that you continue to tell lies that Spain is extending control into the america's and that we are an imperialistic nation, that last time Spain checked it had not had a war with an outside nation in thirty years, and another 20 years back until another war which resulted in the nations of Cuba and the Phillipines being made from land which Spain lost. Land that today Spain is reconizing as never truly belonging to it. |

Fair enough, but NATO notwithstanding, Spain's stance toward the USSR is aggressive enough to involve it in virtually any war that might break out with the West in the near future, and a pan-Hispanic military alliance would likely bring us into it as well. We are simply seeking that which we have wanted all along: an alliance of South American states for South American people. That way we can ensure that we will not be the unwitting pawns of the European hegemony. |

You are gladly welcome to that, the L.U. is merely an aid organization unless South American countries in it want it to be otherwise, indeed these two groups are two limbs of the same man, what if the two groups where to form into one, this being the defence and political wing in which Spain had no say and the L.U. being the aid and development wing? |

If the two groups were to merge under the auspices of one, what would be the point in having two wings? It could simply be written into the charter of the Latino Union that Spain has no say in military matters concerning Latin America. |

Well, we allready have the seperate facilities (threads), but all could function under one entity or we could get rid of one set of facilities. It's up to you Spain has no opinion in the set up of facilities. |

Again, as we are presently opposed to the L.U. for reasons stated, merging the two organizations into one would not be in our best interests. |

Since we represent the people, yes. Of all South American nations, Argentina under Mr. Peron has done the most to advance the plight of the common citizen. That is why our GDP per capita is so high (higher than Spain's, incidentally) and that is why our total GDP is so high despite our small population. The Third Way has served us well, and it will work for South America as a whole. |

Indeed it is higher (as I pointed out), but oil money does have to be considered in the equation. Representing the people hardly makes you able to say what is best for them, like progressing living conditions everywhere. |

As we said, living conditions have improved dramatically for Argentines under the Perons. Today our nation has one of the best distributions of wealth in Latin America and the highest percentage of unionized workers. We share our progress with all citizens. |
