It has been over a year since Mr. Peron first called for political and economic unity among the Latin American states. Since then, negotiations have been continuing off-and-on with four of Argentina’s neighbors: Chile, Paraguay, Uruguay, and Bolivia. Of the four, Chile has demonstrated the most interest in partnership with Argentina, no doubt driven by the intense inflation that has afflicted its citizens for the past decade, let alone the recent increase in anti-Spanish sentiments. Paraguay and Bolivia have tentatively agreed to accept some sort of arrangement, and Argentina is currently working with them to eliminate trade restrictions on agricultural products.

President Peron said Tuesday that a Chilean and Argentinean union would be the most productive step forward in Latin American affairs since independence from Spain 150 years ago. Despite its problems, Chile has one of the best agricultural markets in South America and a relatively high GDP compared to its neighbors. United, the two countries could do much to reverse the economic stagnation currently plaguing the region.

However, the current Chilean government is rife with corruption and inefficiency, and the sitting president, Gabriel Gonzalez Videla, is virtually powerless to effect any change. Since 1952 is an election year in Chile, no real progress is expected until after this year’s campaign season is over in September.
Viva Perón!
