Argentina's election is scheduled for November 11 this year. Polls currently have the ruling Peronist faction ahead of the primary opposition, the Radical Civic Union, by a wide margin.

Some controversy surrounding the role of Eva Peron erupted earlier this summer when demands for her to run as the vice presidential candidate began to grow louder. In a mass rally on August 22 near the Casa Rosada, throngs of citizens gathered to declare their support for Eva and demanded that she announce her candidacy. While wildly popular among the masses, it was rumored that such a move could alienate more traditional leaders of the military, who would feel uncomfortable taking orders from a woman should she succeed Juan as president.

Due to continuing world tensions, and the regional issues surrounding Spain and its resurgent imperialist ambitions, Eva declined to run this year, instead urging the people to support her husband first. "In these dire times, it is necessary to present a strong diplomatic and military hand against those who threaten us," she announced last Thursday, "so my role will continue to be what it has always been - to bring hopes and dreams of the people to the president."

The results of the election are now in, and the current Peronist regime has been reelected by a margin of approximately three-to-one. Tensions around the world and a rise in concern for national defense following the Spanish resurgence in South America have been widely cited for the increase in Peronist support.

June 4, 1952 - Inauguration Day in Argentina

Juan Domingo Peron and his wife rode through the streets today in celebration of his second inauguration as president of Argentina. Reelected by an overwhelming 70% of the vote last November, Peron pledged to continue empowering the working classes by making Argentina a modern, independent, industrialized nation. He spoke of the remarkable national unity the country has demonstrated in the face of economic crisis and uncertain threats from overseas, concluding that as long as Argentineans remembered who they were, no one could take their freedom from them.

Eva Peron gave a long speech touting the advances women have made under her husband's administration. Before Peronism, women in Argentina did not have the right to vote; since then they have not only gained equality under law, but made significant inroads into higher education and senior positions of business. Mrs. Peron also vowed to continue her war on poverty during the next six years, reminding citizens of their divine duty to help those less fortunate than themselves.

After the inaugural speeches were over, the Perons reviewed a parade of cavalry and infantry past the capital, including elements from the famed Patricians' Infantry. Mechanized brigades were ordered to remain at home for the ceremony as a means of saving fuel during the recession. Nonetheless, the administration successfully used the opportunity to stress the sense of national revitalization that Peronism has brought. Citizens walked away feeling more optimistic about themselves and the future of their country.

OOC: In case anyone is wondering why Eva Peron is not near death, as she was historically at this time, it is because I arranged with EQ to have her undergo radical surgery several years back, when I first joined. This was long before her historical hysterectomy, and consequently, she is cancer-free and will not die soon. /OOC
