For about 5 months now, google books was included in the regular google search function, filed under the relevance tag- if anything is found by the search, google books will also be shown. It also has the significant drawback of being only new, or new publication- older, and thus many of the better, books are not generally included. |

Yeah.. but hey, it should help indeed. Now that I see the layout, I think I have perused a couple pages without knowing it, when doing a google search. The nice thing is that with a direct link, there is no need to scroll through pages and pages just to find something. Google is so good in regards to findings, it is almost bad.

I know what you mean, there are times that google can be most frustrating in use. I personally make extensive use of google books, in addition to the regular google- while the books are almost invariably limited, they can be quite useful in conjunction with other sources. I've found that JStor is another excellent source for publications, particularly essay and journal types, on almost any subject. Of course, nothing quite beats the old fashioned hall of records

What we really need is online resources that show important historical events and natural disasters. I'd kill to have something like that. The Wikipedia pages just don't feed the cat. |

One of the unfortunate side effects of all writing, and particularly on the internet, is that it is input based. Unless you know what, or at least have a vague idea of what, to look for then the task is insurmountable, if indeed achievable. While it isn't exactly within the bounds of 'proper' research, I've found textbooks (particularly university, and even better College/High School ones) are excellent resources because they are, after all, designed to list the events, by catagory or chronological order, or whatever. I was originally alerted to the idea of a good friend of mine, who noticed that textbooks, while often simplified or incomplete, are one of the few sources of listings. Since then I've refined the process, but it's mostly a matter of finding the appropriate textbook (if you don't want to buy them, searching the national archives or your local library will usually be a good start) and then more in depth research on the specific events mentioned therein. |

The problem with textbooks is that they take a fragmented view. Nothing is chronological. They go through the ENTIRE history of China, then the ENITIRE history of Eastern Europe. Then they go through the ENTIRE history of Latin America. What I want is a chronologically based list of important global events that isn't fractured like a texbook. That way I don't have to go digging in fifty different parts of a textbook everyday. I should go up to up to the school library and see if they have something in their bazillions of books. |

I have a splendid one on Military History, "The Harpers Encyclopedia of Military History" which is set out by era, and then it is split into continents. Very useful. |

Very true, but resources of comprehensive compendiums are rare- hence the use of a textbook to cover a given item. By coordinating information in different textbooks, and then doing in depth research, you have the information and the starting point provided. Short of compendiums (which are rare indeed) and encylopediae, which are often insufficient in detail or inadequately arranged, they are a commonly available, cheap and less intensive way of getting information you need- particularly on topics that are sufficiently obscure not to warrant a compendium/encyclopedia |
