BUENOS AIRES - President Juan Peron announced today that a massive reorganization of the national intelligence service will take place in 1952. The Secretaria de Inteligencia (S.I.), which was created in 1946 following Peron’s inauguration as president, will be updated with modern equipment and given broader jurisdiction over both foreign and domestic operations. The capstone of this ambitious program, Peron said, is the appointment of a new Minister of Intelligence, who will centralize administration of the formerly disparate civilian and military intelligence agencies.

The recently-promoted Supreme Director of Argentine intelligence, General Wolfgang Hochstetter, was selected from a group of loyal Peronists known for their fierce personal dedication to the president. Hochstetter is a German-born émigré who settled in Argentina in 1945 after escaping the Soviet attack on Berlin. Originally assigned to the Cryptology Department of the Army Intelligence Service, Hochstetter quickly attracted the government’s attention with his commitment to duty, enthusiasm, and efficiency. At an outdoor reception thrown today in honor of the new intel chief, Mr. Peron praised Hochstetter for being a “devoted follower of the regime, a true intellect, and a man who understands the broader forces at work in our world.” The general duly pledged to lead the S.I. “with all the energy and rigor” he could muster.

As the ceremony drew to a close, a small scuffle broke out when an unnamed heckler confronted Hochstetter over “black market activities” he allegedly engaged in while attached to army intelligence: “Been keepin’ busy, eh, Hochstetter?!” The general angrily dismissed the charges, demanded to know who the accuser was and what he was doing there, and promised that heads would roll for such insolence.

The man was later identified as a retired American air force colonel who had been vacationing in South America. The Peronists promptly had him deported to Miami.

After serious consideration, President Peron has decided to place General Hochstetter in charge of the special forces battalion of Buenos Aires. All ultimate authority will still lie with Mr. Peron himself, but the president deemed it "fitting and proper" that a man of Hochstetter's experience and background should command the elite force.
