June 25, 1952 - Argentina Unveils Education Initiative

Today, Minister of Education Armando Mendez San Martin and President Juan Peron revealed their latest plan to bolster social democracy in Argentina: a universal education system. “What our people need in these dark times is opportunity, and an education in the sciences and liberal arts provides the best opportunity for young Argentines to harness their inherent intellectual skills and budding ambition to service for their fellow man and their state.”

Access to universities has been broadened under Peron, but many of the poorest students, especially those from rural farming provinces, have still been unable to afford the rising living and travel costs associated with post-secondary education. No more. The president promised that the new plan would make each of the six national universities accessible to all high-school graduates, regardless of age, wealth, or sex. Each institution will receive significant boosts in public funding starting this fiscal year, to supplement financial aid and the renovation of campus facilities. Several newer, small state colleges will also be constructed.

High schools and grade schools will also see a marked increase in funding, thanks to Peron’s commitment to provide better learning environments for the underprivileged. The platform includes nearly $600 million in new allocations for K-12 schools, in addition to the creation of a new sponsorship program that would set up temporary schools in unoccupied buildings and churches of remote towns, so rural children can have some access to a formal education. The Roman Catholic Church’s centuries-old religious schools will receive support as well.

Finally, the new plan provides a chance to inculcate the values of Justicialism into the next generation. “Schools do much more than simply teach children facts about life and the world,” the minister of education said. “They shape children’s character, supply valuable moral lessons, and help young people distinguish right from wrong. Schools must teach the child the mysticism, the soul and the sentiment of Peronismo.” The Argentine Congress lent the minister a helping hand: it made Eva Peron’s The Explanation of My Life required reading for all schoolchildren.
Viva Perón!

We applaud the step for universal education.
Tremblez, tyrans et vous perfides
L'opprobre de tous les partis
Tremblez ! vos projets parricides
Vont enfin recevoir leurs prix !
Tout est soldat pour vous combattre
S'ils tombent, nos jeunes héros,
La terre en produit de nouveaux,
Contre vous tout prêts à se battre !
