Following the resignation of Louis St. Laurent following his election defeat it became quite apparent that a new leader would be needed (preferably before the next election) and today in Montreal the Liberal Party of Canada has held a leadership vote and elected former Foreign Affairs Minister Lester B. Pearson to be their leader, defeating Paul Martin on the final ballot
