![]() "I struggled for a long time with survivin'. And you — no matter what, you keep finding something to fight for." Rating - M for Blood, Gore, Violence, Language, etc. Genre - Action-adventure, Survival Horror Platform - Playstation 3 & Playstation 4 Game Developer - Naughty Dog It has been 20 years since a special strain of cordyceps fungus emerged and began infecting humans, systematically taking over their brains and turning them into The Infected. Joel, a ruthless survivor with few moral lines left to cross, lives in one of the last remaining Quarantine Zones. These walled-off, oppressive cities are run by what’s left of the military. Despite the strict martial law, Joel operates in the black market of the city, smuggling contraband for the right price. Joel is asked by a dying friend to look after Ellie, a fourteen-year-old girl with courage beyond her years. What starts out as a simple job to deliver Ellie to another Quarantine Zone, soon transforms into a profound journey that will forever change Joel and Ellie. As they journey across a post-pandemic United States, Joel and Ellie will encounter different factions of survivors that have each found a unique way of dealing with the infected humans, the lack of supplies, and the threat of other survivors. As Joel and Ellie struggle to persevere, they must learn to trust each other and work together in order to survive the realities of this new world. One of the things i enjoyed about the game was the depth of it. The name to start off with has multiple reasons that sort of appear depending on where you are in the story. At the beginning of the story with no deep information about the story you could easily say that "The Last of Us" refers to humanity which it can (multiple meanings) but that isn't the only meaning. Humanity has been pushed to the edge but humanity isn't the protagonist of the story Joel is. This comes to what i think is the second meaning of the title. It refers to civilization that Joel rejoins and the last of us refers to both Joel and Ellie as the last people to rejoin his brother's community. I kind of thought this since i think it's not really about finding a cure but about Joel realizing he still has life in him and still wants to be part of life and people. At any rate it is a great game

Great insight! The game definitely almost tricks a first time player into thinking it's about something it's not - the beginning of the outbreak, family perhaps, and then you think maybe it's just about finding a cure and stopping it. I love that, as you said, there's more depth to the game than that and the story isn't actually about what you see at face value. It absolutely is about Joel losing his humanity and how he is able to find it again, even when everyone else still seems to have lost theirs. You see it at the beginning of the game - the thing he loses that sets him down that path - and then you meet him again when he's already changed so much. Watching Ellie bring out the humanity in him, even as he fights against it in the beginning and tries to not allow a bond to be formed between them, is really intriguing and emotional and just, great story telling lol. Hands down one of my favourite games, it really is more about the characters and relationships than anything else. |
