Description Thesaurus Collection
Whether you're a new writer looking to improve your skills or an experienced writer facing a case of writer's block, the thesaurus series by Angela Ackerman and Becca Puglisi are a must-have for any writer's toolbox. The description thesaurus collection (found at Writers Helping Writers) includes:

emotions
negative and positive character traits
weather and earthly phenomenons
physical features
colour, texture, shapes
settings
symbolism and motifs
talents and skills
emotional wounds.

Readers prefer to be shown rather than told, with few exceptions, and they get bored of reading the same descriptions over and over again. Often the reason we fall back on the same visual cues for certain things is because we're inexperienced ourselves. Maybe we don't pay attention to what we do when we're sad, or we don't fully grasp literary devices such as personification. Whatever the reason, the result remains the same: repetitive, lifeless writing that at times can leave you wondering why you're still bothering to write at all. With these resources, not only can you add variety to your writing, you can also make your readers feel it - with a little practice. :type:

Note - The Emotion Thesaurus, Setting Thesaurus and Character Traits Thesaurus have all been published.
Some samples are still available on the Writers Helping Writers website, but for the full collection the books must be purchased.
