There are many breeds of horses found all across Yalas; from the Globetrotter of southern Messar to the Zebra of Fjar. Each and every one is useful for one reason or another, though for some breeds it is more difficult to see. Take the Brittle-Hills Bay, for instance. They are athletic and coordinated, being considered the finest jumpers by most breeders. This is from living in the mountainous terrain of the Brittle-Hills region for thousands of years. However due to the lack of open prairies in Brittle-Hills, they are slower than other breeds in a gallop. Breeds like the Earlean Runner are amazingly fast, which originated as a need to outrun predators on the open plains. However, this speed often sacrifices heartiness and resilience. The Earlean Runner is so fast that it has occasionally been known to break its leg in a full speed gallop, which leaves the rider with the responsibility of putting it down, and stranding him potentially hundreds of miles from civilization. This problem does not exist for the Globetrotter or the Silver-Shoal Roan. The Silver-Shoal Roan has special traits that may only be desirable in certain areas, while the Globetrotter is a generally balanced mount, and more popular as a widespread mount. However, in areas with specific needs, horses with specific traits are much more commonplace. Some horses are even unique to an area, only ever being found in others for very special reasons, such as the Zebra. Following is a quick overview of the breeds currently in existence on Yalas. Globetrotter: Most commonly a chestnut or bay, the Globetrotter is widely cherished by citizens of Messar. They are loyal, resilient, and very long-lived (usually 15 to 20 years). Many farmers use them as workhorses, due to their tirelessness. However, they prove to be exceptional mounts for the same reason. They can travel vast distances in a day, sometimes upwards of 40 miles. And while they are not as fast as other breeds, they can maintain a moderate speed for hours at a time. They are called 'Globetrotter', because their sustainable gait is something between a trot and a gallop. However, this trot does not have the jerking or jostling that is associated with the trot of other breeds. It is a very smooth gait, and should cause experienced riders no discomfort. Zebra: Zebra are native to Fjarr, and have never been domesticated by Mesians. We cannot make them pull carts or plows. We cannot ride them. The only people to have done so are the Fjar. They have owned domesticated Zebra for centuries, and for them, the Zebra behave no differently than a Globetrotter or Earlean Runner. Mesians can obtain Zebra from Fjar breeders, but it is a very trying ordeal to find one who is willing to give a Zebra to an outsider, and not considered worth it by many. This is because for Mesians, and indeed anyone who is not Fjar, Zebra are highly stubborn and temperamental. They are also not exceptionally fast, but they are incredibly strong, tough, and very aggressive. For this reason, they make exceptional warhorses, despite their small stature. They will refuse to function, however, if adorned with anything more than a blanket and bridle. Messarans have been known to ride zebras, but it has only been done by the most masterful riders. In my own experience, the best use for a zebra is protecting the sheep in your field from wolves. |
