My heart was pounding in my chest. I looked over at Steve and tightened my hold on his hand as we walked out to his truck. His tousled brown hair looked adorably cute as it fell over his eyes just enough to give them a shadowed, mysterious look. One side of his face turned up as he gave me one of his boyish half-smiles that I loved so much. "So how did you like the movie?" he asked while digging his keys out of his pocket. "It was decently amazing," I said with a smile. "You picked a good one." "Don't I always?" he laughed. When he clicked at the truck to unlock it I automatically reached to open the passenger door. I'd ridden in Steve’s truck more times than I could count on my fingers but it never ceased to give me a sense of freedom and maturity. I mean...riding in your super hot boyfriend's car could do that to a girl. "Wait!" Steve said quickly and surprised me by jogging around to my side of the truck and opening my door. "M-lady," he said while doing an imitation of a chivalrous knight bowing for his maiden. "Oh why thank you kind sir." I curtsied and then climbed up, trying not to laugh. Steve was a normal, regular jock in school but when it came to me he always seemed to change. Holding doors for me, carrying my books, and once he even carried me through the rain when the ground got too muddy. I loved it when he did things like that but for some reason it always made me want to laugh because of his transition from jock to the kind and sensitive boyfriend I knew and loved. Five seconds later he was climbing in on his side and closing the door. "Hmm...so what time does this beautiful princess of mine have to return to her castle?" Steve reached up and softly stroked my hair. I looked down at myself. I saw my black and white DC shoes, dark skinny jeans, and a t-shirt that said 'Why dread the Inevitable?’ I knew that by then my dark brown hair, complete with red streaks, was probably a bit messy and my painfully plain face was drooping because of the lack of sleep. "You could hardly call me a princess," I contradicted. "Oh I beg to differ," he said softly and then leaned forward. When his familiar lips met mine I could've melted if I hadn't already trained myself not to become weak in the knees every time we kissed. When he pulled away I could still feel his lips on mine. "So...? When are your parents expecting you?" "Oh...umm...right." I stumbled over my words. Okay, so maybe I was still a bit weak. I looked over at the clock. 9:30. “Well curfew for Friday nights – as you already know - is 10:30, so we have about an hour. Want to go get some food...or something?" I asked. The truth was that I wasn't really hungry; I just didn't want to go home. "Or something..." I stared over and watched as he tapped his chin in mock thought. He grinned and winked at me. "I got a surprise for you." He turned on the car and backed out of the parking space and away from the movie theater. "Where are we going?" I asked, unable to hold back my curiosity. "Shhh...it's a secret." Just two minutes later he was pulling into what looked like a park. Clean cut grass, a few trees, a small pond with a dock and a few ducks floating in it, and even a small swing set off to the side. "Wow, I don't think I've ever been here," I said in awe. The moon was reflecting off the calm ripples of the water and it gave the whole place a magical look. "I thought you'd like it." I turned towards him as he shut off the ignition. "I love you." As I said it I could feel its truth. I really did love Steve. He smiled and leaned towards me for another kiss. I don't think I could've been happier. I was in a magical wonderland of night with a guy I loved. His sweet kisses soon got more urgent. I went along with it, loving how safe I felt with him. Suddenly I felt his hand slide up my shirt and I broke off. "Hey is something wrong?" he asked, shocked. "Um...Steve...I..." As I stumbled over my words I grabbed the arm that was in my shirt and tried pulling it out. I hoped he could see my thoughts through my eyes so I wouldn't have to say it out loud. Regardless of how much I loved him I was just a sophomore...I didn't feel ready for something like that. As I started pulling on his arm though, he tensed up. Before I could say anymore he'd started kissing me again. His other hand went to the back of my head, smashing my face against his. "Stemphv!" I tried to speak but his mouth wouldn't allow it. His touch had lost its softness and was now roughly groping. Panic started to rush through me as I realized the full reality of my situation. Steve was taking advantage of me. Every part of me was screaming to deny it. I loved Steve...Steve was the sweetest, best boyfriend a girl could ask for...he couldn't possibly be trying to hurt me...intentionally. I pushed my hands against his chest which immediately resulted in him grabbing my arms. On the bright side, they weren't groping me or holding my face to his anymore...on the downside, I had nothing else to block him off with. "Kayla...I thought you loved me..." he whispered. Hurt showed in his eyes but I wasn't sure if it was an act or not. "I do...really I do...but Steve, I'm not ready for anything serious yet." I could still feel the fear pulsing through my veins. I felt completely vulnerable, knowing all too well that if he wanted to, he could easily get his way with or without my consent. "If you loved me then you should trust me...you should love me. Why wouldn't you be ready?" He leaned forward and put his cheek up against mine and whispered in my ear, "I want to love you...I will love you." With that he'd resumed kissing me. There was no more doubt in my mind on his motives now, just disappointment and hopelessness. I started beating my fists against his chest and finally resulted in slapping him. "Ahh!" he shouted, touching his cheek. The he reached up and hit me. I felt the sting both on my face and in my heart. I screamed in fear, in agony, and in hopes that someone would hear me. |
