I bet most of you guys are already familiar with this term. If not, do not think of it as something that doesn't need your attention.
Knowingly or unknowingly you have been contributing to the growth of big data. Big data, just as the name suggests, it is the data which is really big. We are taking about huge amounts of data which can't be stored in just a data center anymore.
There isn't any ideal tool to analyze big data ..but so far, hadoop is doing it's best for the analysis purpose.

Now, share your knowledge about big data with me, everyone :D

Essentially, everything we create online (including this post) needs to be stored somewhere, hence creating data? The problem is we don't have the infrastructure to keep up with future growth.

    Or have I misunderstood?

If this is what he meant, then that is a non-issue for the foreseeable future considering the intense shrinking of necessary space for containing data. Although costly, there are very tiny flash drives that can hold even 1 TB (1024 GBs) of data: http://www.amazon.com/s?ie=UTF8&page=1&rh=i%3Aaps%2Ck%3A1tb%20usb Yet it was only so many years ago that we struggled to fit even 1 GB of data into something the same size.

Where is all the data of the Internet stored, actually?

Surely it's got to be housed somewhere, the "cloud" has to have some physical home right?

But where are these data centers? Who has the wonderful privilege of hosting the Internet?

As far as I understand they try to put them in places with minimal distractions from power outages and natural disasters. Often times that means in other countries around the world as well.

Are you asking what is considered a lot of data? No idea. Probably a geopbyte?
