https://www.google.com/contributor/welcome/ Contributor by Google has officially launched. Contributor is a service where you can choose to pay from $2-$10 a month, and in return you receive a lower amount or no Google Ads on websites that have the service enabled. Instead, your money goes directly to the websites you visit. So (for example) say a website like Ars Technica had Google Ads. If you were a member of Contributor, you would instead see no ads when visiting the website, and part of the money you pay (I assume based on how much you use the website, and others with the service) goes to Ars for their advertisement revenue. It's been called a general subscription service for the internet, but I don't see it as that. I see it more as a direct way to support websites I enjoy, that provide free content to consume. It's quite enjoyable, I think, to know that I'm supporting websites directly through this program. |

Interesting concept. I can see this hurting revenue for sites that use Google Ads though, and revenue already isn't that great for a lot of (smaller) sites. I'm sure Google won't be sharing their contributor revenue with the sites using their service. I don't see this being too popular though. Ad block is free. |
