Vagrant Storyis the tittle of an epic story knights, dragons, dungeons & endangered maidens. Of course, all of this, the music and graphics in charge of a prestigious enterprise, developer of one of the most famous game franchise, Square(soft)Enix. If you got the luck of experiencing this sensitive orgasm, you'll be able to witness the wonders of Square, while it was Squaresoft, before declaring bankrupt fuck thanks to the catastrophic and pathetic movie "Final Fantasy: the spirit within".

We found ourselves in the epic land of Valendia, place of many Final Fantasy tales, more exactly, inside Graylands territory. The story turn around the life of a VKP Inquistor (Valendian Knights for Peace) Ashely Riot, a military in charge of keeping the security state and its laws, well known as Riskbreakers. The Riskbreakers are elite knigths whos memory is erasen to ansure the max of their capabilities.
Valendia lives an enviroment of civil war, which turned the Nobility and the Pope each agaisnt the other. In the middle of the conflict a new religion grow strong, Müllekamp, a faith born from the teachings of a priestess of the same name. Headed by a charismatic as enigmatic sorcerer named Sydney Losstarot, a wizard with powers which allows him to surpass the Death itself. And the "Blood Sin", the fountain of his powers.
Meanwhile, Joshua Barborba, son of the Civil War hero, member of the parliament, Duke Byron Bardorba, is kidnapped by Müllekamp. The Riskbreakers Ashley Riot and Callo Merlose are, them, sent into action.
Müllekamp chasing head to Léa Monde, a glorius fallen gity, now on ruin due to a catastrophic cataclism.
Them Callo's taken hostage by Sydney and his partisan, John Hardin, along with Bardorba's son. On this right moment Ashley discover that the Pope's personal military, the Crimson Blades has been deployed all around the city aparently chasing Müllekamp too. And all of those whom cross their ways is executed.
Léa Monde city's a hollow place, filt with ancient magic and fantastic but dangerous creatures. As results of this, hidden memories, suposely erasen from Ashley's mind shows up. Such the murdering of a wife and son, althrough, the identity of the murders.
After beating several dangers and riddles, Ashley gets with Sydney in Kiltia's Cathedral, center of Léa Monde. On this place Crimsom Blades true nature is shown. Sent by the Cardinal in quest for an ancient and powerful magic, the Grand Grimoire. Which was the city itself. Moreover Crimson Blade's leader, Commander Romeo Guildestern plans to found the Grand Grimoire, using as martyr his lover, Commander Samantha.
After Sydney having teleported Callo, Joshua and a heavily-wounded John, and outside the city, Commander Guildestern takes possesion of the Grand Grimoire.
After all, Ashley founds dying Sydney and knows from Sydney's words that the "Blood Sin", which he was bearer, is gods's seal to protect the Grand Grimoire, and it's hidden forces.
And that Ashley has been choosed as the new bearer...
After battling an ovewrwhelming Guildestern, Ashley gets victorious, and seals the great magic that keep the fallen city standing.
Escaping from the falloing city holding Sydney in arms, an Ashley tattoed with the Cross of Iocus on his back is noticed, showing his stance as the new bearer and protector of the Grand Grimoire...
A week later, on Duke Bardorba's second residence, this sick and invalidated on his bed recieves Ashley's visit, who really is Sydney on disguise. Sydney was Duke's first son, and this offered him to the gods in desperation for saving his life. Duke Bardorba apologies Sydney for what he had done, and following stabs the young sorcerer. Sydney's body banishes in the air, them the Bardorba dies...
Meanwhile, in the outside of the manor, a nightwatch founds a woman, and this identifies herself as VKP Inquisitor Callo Merlose. Them the soldier apologies and keep with his watch. Turning back is noticed she was Ashley using magic to changes his appareance, and lately disappears in the night darkness.
The gameplay was quite different from the current RPG's. the allowed adjusting the camera in a third person view showing nicely detailed escenarios, with convincing sound effect, giving the feeling of being in there. The tone of the graphics was on dark browns, helping on the suspense emviroment.
Also, there was first person view option, without no other use than admiring the highly detailed scenarios and enemies.
Pressing circle to enter on battle mode and X to exit. Square for jumping, a rare improviment on Squaresoft games and triangle for game menu.
The counts which 3 different types of weapons, edged, piercing and blunt. On each type there was a wide variety of issues, which could be admired differntly during gameplay, another new improvement for Squaresoft games. Perhaps many types of shields for adding defense. The game also allowed the player to forge new equipment (Armor, weapons and shields) to create more powerfull equipment, as well as training they to improve their charateristics.
Ashley counts with a basic attack using about 11 different types of weapons (Including fist, bowgun and staffs), plus 5 special techniques for each weapon. Perhaps the player was able of using magic to aid, attack, enhace Ashley's capabilities or decreasing enemy's ones.
The game system was designed for a free movement battle. Totally paralel to the old turn based battle system from Squaresoft's games. Them, the enemies and Ashley as well could be attacked at limbs, altering their performance, so on hitting arms decrease attack and defense, hitting legs decreases movility and further. Also a combo system which allowed the player to deal a continuous attack to the enemy for increasing damage and decreasing the timelapse between attacks.
The music is job from Hitoshi Sakamoto, compositor de la musica de la saga Final Fantasy, who didn't wasted a second on creating wonderfull pieces for each stage of the game. The stages where designed based upon european arquitecture making the game very very attractive.
For fans of the franchise, Final Fantasy XII got many elements from this realease, such the third person battle system, some vocabulary and tips from the story.
Sadly, the game was in the paper, a merchandising failure dueto the low publicity. However the game found its way to catch up the attention of the players.
The game is slightly difficult, making it a bad option for newbie and unrelated players. No matter what, the cinematics, the plot and the music makes it a great and amusing game capable of finding a place in the sweet memories of the player, novice or veteran ones!
