Huh. I have little opinion, but the comments I agree with - Disney shouldn't make anything based on it, or controversy shall arise. |

Look at the gang from Bad Aptitude. Know why they look so unhappy? Their show ended with a crying Tommy after being dumped...at age 11. Help us add on to AGU to give it a proper ending here.

I studied Literature at university, and we had a lecturer who did a unit on Toy Story. She was convinced that the entire film was about homosexuality. I was less convinced and thought it was a case of seeing things that weren't really there - which many literature teachers are prone to do. It's strange though: we now have film, literature and TV show equality for characters of all genders and races, but gay characters - in shows that are not primarily focussed on the theme of homosexuality - tend to be almost jokes - see Carol and Susan in Friends. The fact that animation primarily leaves this topic alone is also a bit of a concern. In Australia, there was a fuss kicked up a few years ago about a story shown on Play School, a pre-schooler's show. In it, a little girl and "her two mums" went to the park. At no point on screen did the two mums kiss, hug each other or even barely touch, but the outrage was enormous. Kids are too young to understand this stuff, surely! We can't expose the littlies to such confusing things so early in life! But if kids are exposed to these things early on, then they will learn that they are normal. They won't question it, because they are still learning. Not only that, but there is still a trace of discrimination in that we will accomodate children from families of all races, but not all sexualities. We need this in children's education, in their entertainment, in their upbringing. So they come to understand it rather than react badly to it. It would save the pain and suffering caused to children of these couples. As the son of a woman who, when I was still in school, came out and is still in a deep and committed, loving realtionship with another woman, this is a personally sensitive subject for me. I am straight, but I think that society really needs to open up this door. I hope someday to see a "prom movie" like the one described in the article. I may cheer. That said, we must also get to the point where being gay isn't just a niche, but an accepted part of life. Of course, this is still a long way off. But you can bet your bottom dollar that when I have children, in the not-so-distant future, I'm hoping that we will be in a progressed enough society that they won't get teased about their two grandmas. And I look forward to that day. |
