AGU: Season 1 May Have Been Best of All

I have started the process of downloading AGU episodes onto the computer, in the hopes of creating my own DVD set of the series. I started with some season one episodes today and have been watching those episodes as I go. I came to the conclusion that season one of the series may have been the best of the show overall. The reason I say this is because the series was at its most popular then, a majority of the episodes were well written and funny, and the characters actually acted like the ages they were. I watched "Truth or Consequences" and I could really picture a group of fifth graders trying to be a part of a film project for a fellow classmate, only to have the process halted because of immaturity. I mean, it was so in line with how kids act at that age, it actually was brilliant.

I'll admit, the animation probably isn't as splendid as seasons 2-5 - but everything else about season one is pretty enjoyable. After all, this was the start of the series for us all. As I watched ToC and even "Thief Encounter," I remember going back to 2003 when these episodes first premiered and getting a kick out of what I watched. It sure brought back a lot of great memories of AGU for me. I'm not saying the rest of the seasons were utter crap because they are great for their own reasons. But season one really sticks out to me as being more superior than the others because it's really what got the ball rolling and really helped establish AGU as a formidable spin-off. That despite the fact that viewer ratings dropped off significantly in season 3.

Last I checked, relationships didn't really interfere with S2 or S3, with the exception of FoF, and honestly I find S3 of the highest quality.

Look at the gang from Bad Aptitude. Know why they look so unhappy? Their show ended with a crying Tommy after being dumped...at age 11. Help us add on to AGU to give it a proper ending here.

Don't get me wrong I do have season one episodes that I like (Theif Encounter, Tommy Foolery, and Truth or Consequences most of all) but in my opinion there was still plenty of potential relationship stuff going down then as well. Chuckie's in Love is an obvious one of trying to be someone you're not to get a girl interested in you, then It's Cupid Stupid and to a degree Bad Kimi had a little to do with that stuff too. When it really comes down to it, KC should've just made them a little older. If they had, ALL of the plots in the show would've fit in to their age group just fine.

When comparing the animation of the rest of the series to season 1, it also is inferior, enough said. Nevertheless, the first few episodes I ever saw were from season 1, so I definately have to give it up for these eps as it was one of the reasons I started watching in the first place.

Maybe because the show was so new and fresh; storylines seemed so much greater in season one for me. It seems to me that Tommy acted more like a 10 year old in season one than he did in the remainder of the seasons. He acted much older in the other seasons. I agree in a sense that KC should've aged the characters more than they were. But they set the trend with "All Growed Up" and it was something they had to follow.

And looking back, I have to say that their "new" looks in seasons 2-5 made them look older than they were. I think a lot of their looks weren't simplified enough. Heck, in season one, Tommy just wore a plain white t-shirt. In the remaining seasons, he had a whole assortment of outfits to wear. I remember a common complaint of many AGU fans at the time during season one was the characters lack of differing outfits. I gotta think KC listened to the fans but they may have gone overboard on that.

How is the downloading process coming along Luke??

As stated they should have made the cast a little older but since they didn't and had a great showing in season 1 it is there job to follow it up. Honest to say it is a great overall series and one of the best ever in Nick history to say. If they could do it all over again, like the ones now never existed and make brand new episodes with them being a little older. ect...I'm not sure if I would want them too....now there is something to think about.

I don't really mind their ages at all. While season 1 may be hard for me to accept, the later seasons fill me in with great pleasure and surprises as the characters' wardrobes look awesome in every way. KC pushed towards a new level of creativity there. I do have the entire first season on those individual DVD releases.

I know I spoke of this already to you, Jay, but the downloading process has stalled. I'll look to be starting back up here soon. Thanks for asking.

You also bring forth an interesting perspective compared to us all. It's one of the reasons why the AGU continuation project started with the cast being a couple of years older because that's where we would've liked them to be in the original series. Many of the storylines, particularly later in the show's run, were more fitting for an older cast. So for you to say you like them at the ages they were portrayed in the show is nice to see. Way to stick up for KC and the direction they took the show.

And Kevin, I do agree that in season 1, the show's illustrations were certainly lacking compared to the later seasons when the characters wore a variety of different wardrobes. But for me, that isn't enough to totally write off season 1, either. Like I said, I thought the majority of storylines in season one were a lot more in tune with the characters ages and they seemed much more realistic. I mean, how much fun was it to see Tommy and the rest of the group in the human body museum with Lou rescuing Tommy from one of the exhibits? Or Tommy overcoming his fear of water and rescuing Phil from a raging river? Now those are awesome scenarios to overcome.

Between the complete set of DVDs officially released, Season 1 is the only one I have all the episodes of (sadly my VHS tapes of S2 onwards have...well, died) and I would agree that it is probably my favourite. While my favourite individual episode is Seperate But Equal, I liked S1 because it was very much about them being kids of their ages: Chuckie's crush on Nicole, Dil finding his own weird groove, Phil and Lil's sibling rivalry and so on...they're all very age appropriate stories and they are all by and large genuinely funny. The characters were, in my opinion, frequently stronger in S1 as well: particularly Phil, who is more of a wisecraking kind of guy in S1 rather than the turn to dopey that happened about halfway through S2 (my closer familiarity with S1 Phil is why my writing is influenced by that form of the characte); and Tommy, who goes on to become seemingly oblivious to the world around him as the episodes wear on (he becomes far closer to Angelica as time goes on, with Dil constantly having to pull him back down to earth: "Bad Aptitude", "Rat Race", "All Broke Up" to name but a few).

That said, Susie and Angelica still suffer from stifling characterisation in Season 1 (they would not be properly fleshed out until the excellent "Wouldn't It Be Nice", which is still one of my top 5 episodes of all time).

I would have to say that though there are shining moments of brilliance later in the series, it was the first run of episodes, from "Susie Sings the Blues" through to "Interview With A Campfire", that gelled the best and provide the most consistently enjoyable afternoon's viewing. Well worth getting hold of.
