“I remember the first time I shifted. It was damn near freezing outside, and I could feel the cold crackle in my throat and scrape my lungs, like little fingers waiting to claw me open. I had stumbled into the forest, and I was half blind from the wind. I couldn’t feel my fingers or my toes, but I could feel something else inside of me, growing stronger as I wandered further into the woods.” Svetlana tapped her fingers against the dark oak table she leaned so still on, the colour of her irises a mixture of amber-gold as she stared at her guest. It was strange, seeing eyes like that; almost as if she wasn’t human. Was it true, then…?

“Just as I felt I was about to collapse, I felt another part of me take over…I shifted and it was like I had always known how, like the memories of what I’d forgotten just came flooding back. I wasn’t cold anymore. I was running on all fours, straight through the woods like something out of a dream, and I’d have been damned if I thought I didn’t hear the heartbeat of the earth. Do you know what it’s like to feel the pulse and energy of the ground beneath your feet as you run? It’s amazing, truly and simply amazing.” She smiled, that open-mouthed grin that seemed to brighten the room more than the sanguine candles that lit her range of vision.

“Gods, look at you…Your eyes. You think I’m crazy. I’m not. Haven’t you ever felt another presence, another part of yourself waiting to be let out? Every fight you get into, every yelling match…you ever feel something pushing at the back of your mind? Isn’t it strange, those inhuman feats you seem to pull? How can you explain that? I have an animal in me, and you do too. That’s why you’re here, isn’t it? I thought so. Breathe easy now, it’s alright. That’s it. I’ll show you.”
