Beasts. Dreams. Fables. Whatever you prefer to call them, they walk amongst humankind, nearly indistinguishable from the other faces in the crowd. They gain their shapeshifting power from the energy of the earth, the sky and the dreams of those who they influence. They are creatures who, on the outside, appear to be human…but are so much more beneath the skin, shifting to animals whenever they please.

The true name of these mythical beings is Elithyraan (meaning bestial soul), though some have (incorrectly) named them Skinwalkers. However, they differ from the Navajo legends in the fact that they are not always evil, and do not need a piece of an animal to shift, be it fur, a fang or other physical part of the animal they intend to shift into. Likewise, where the Skinwalkers could shift into whatever animal they wanted to, Elithyraan are born able to shift into only one animal, and they may never change it. Those who are born wolf, die wolf; those who are born tiger, die tiger.

Elithyraan often carry a token or ‘totem’ with them (a piece of fur in a locket, a feather tied into the hair, a fang necklace, a small wooden bead of a wolf, fox, or other animal, etc.). Once again, this item is not needed to shift, but is a common thing to see.

Forms and Shifting

All Elithyraan have only two forms: their human form, and their animal form. Their human form looks just like any other human, aside from the fact that the eyes of an Elithyraan may appear brighter during the night, and may even have strange colours, such as blue-green, pink, purple, gold or silver. Their animal forms resemble the animal they were born to shift into, though as a general rule, the animal form of an Elithyraan tends to be beautiful and almost ethereal in appearance.

Unlike Garou (which are explained here), Elithyraan may ‘half-shift’, or manifest parts of their animal selves while in their human forms. This usually gives rise to the sightings of humans with horns, tails, or animal ears…Even digitigrade legs and claws. Elithyraan can not, however, shift into anything resembling a hybrid were-creature as Garou can.

Even though some Elithyraan sometimes complain about pain during their shifts, it is generally only experienced during the phase of the moon in which they were born, and even so, it is very rare. When Elithyraan shift, the motions are usually fluid and even pleasant feeling; shifting in the midst of a run, as most wolves would describe, is the most euphoric feeling in the world.

Legends and Customs

One of the main myths attributed to Elithyraan in general is that only a few certain things can kill them. This is not quite true; Elithyraan can be killed in any number of ways, much like humans can. Though they tend to heal rapidly, there are a few things that can damage them greatly. By dipping bullets, blades or darts in the bone dust of an Elithyraan’s particular animal and damaging them with the weapon, one can cause severe wounds. The bone dust acts as a type of poison, and may make the creature sick for long periods of time. Though the bone dust itself will not kill the creature, it does act as a damaging agent in turn with the wounds inflicted by the weapon’s wielder.

Another (more pleasant) legend is that Elithyraan have outstanding senses. This, as they will most likely brag, is quite true. Elithyraan have stronger senses of hearing, taste, smell and sight, though they never border on precognition. Elithyraan may be able to jump higher, lift heavier things, or hypnotize with their beauty, but these traits will always depend on what animal they were ‘born as’.

Elithyraan always have some sort of magical powers, but only to a certain degree. They may be able to create strong breezes, turn small things to ice, start fires (which can often result in huge blazes, especially in hot, dry weather), etc. The type of powers an Elithyraan has depends on its totem. Other powers may be given to the Elithyraan character by Nevaren Administration as a reward for good sportsmanship or writing.
