I meant to say awhile back that Lukasz's performance against Sevilla was amazing. I never knew he had that in him!

I'm glad there's a decent keeper right behind Almunia, putting pressure on him to really fight for his place. With Jens gone, it'd be a mistake to let him think his position as our no.1 is now cemented.

Also... he seems like such a nice, modest guy. He has an amazing game and he can still admit there were areas of his game that weren't perfect.

Mention Wembley and Polish goalkeepers, and those with long memories will recall a World Cup qualifying match in 1973 when Jan Tomaszewski single-handedly defied England, the 1-1 draw eliminating Sir Alf Ramsey's side and sending Poland to the finals for the first time.

Lukasz Fabianski, the Arsenal goalkeeper, was not born then, but he knows the history. 24 tomorrow, he hopes to celebrate his birthday by going one better and helping Arsenal to victory against Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-finals. "Wembley has played a big part in the history of Polish football,” he said. “Everybody remembers the 1-1 draw from over 30 years ago which, you could say, began the golden era for the sport in Poland.”

Poland finished third in the World Cup finals in 1974 in Germany, and again in Spain eight years later, but by the time Fabianski was old enough to be aware of the game, they were a run-of-the-mill side that were often drawn in qualifying groups with England but seldom posed many problems.

"The first match I remember ever, which I watched on TV, was one of Poland’s matches at Wembley [on October 9, 1996],” Fabianski said. “Unfortunately it was lost 2-1. Marek Citko gave us the lead and some hope. It ended in defeat. It was at the old Wembley of course – now it’s completely rebuilt, but it's going to be a special experience to play at a stadium like that.”

And on a birthday too? “Maybe it's fate,” he said. “I'll be able to spend a birthday having the opportunity to play in a huge game like this, against Chelsea at Wembley, and sharing such a day with the rest of the team as well will add to the experience for me. We need to have something to really celebrate. A win and getting through to the FA Cup final, that would, for me, be the best present.”

Fabianski has his chance tomorrow because Manuel Almunia sustained an injury in first leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Villarreal, and the Poland keeper impressed as Arsenal went through to a semi-final against Manchester United. Some say that his performance in the second leg was his best so far.

“I wouldn't go that far,” he said. “I'm pleased that it turned out well, but I'm most delighted that we won a game that was so important for us and progressed to the semi-finals. It's in matches like these that you can see the true worth of the team. Great results bring increasing self-belief. Everyone contributed this time and I'm proud that I contributed one brick to this building work.”

Fabianski has been impressed by the strength in depth of the club he joined in May 2007 from Legia Warsaw. He was given his first chances in the Carling Cup side, as were so many of the young prospects at the Emirates Stadium, and some of whom were in front of him on Wednesday

“Practically the whole of our back five [Kolo Toure being the exception] had to be changed, but everyone who came in and took the place of others is a good footballer. Every player at Arsenal is already at a very high level of footballing ability. It's not just random chance that they found themselves playing for this club. Rather they clearly had to have a significant level of talent to be chosen to join the squad. Even reserve players have a lot of quality and that makes it easy for me to do my work well.

“We’ve got a chance to write ourselves into the history of this club by winning a trophy for the first time for a number of years, and I’m really proud to have a chance to contribute. The ideal outcome would be to win the two cups. The Premier League is probably beyond us, but we have got to believe that we can one of the cups if not both.”

Should Arsenal reach either final, Fabianski will probably be back on the bench, but he accepts his fate - for now. His aim is to be No 1 for Arsenal, a mantle he has already inherited for Poland, and Arsene Wenger, the manager, has said that he will have more chances. In the meantime, he prepares meticulously.

“Whether I’ve been told beforehand, or whether it’s from the subs’ bench it’s the same. Manu’s injury hasn’t changed anything for me. If it’s a friendly match or the Champions’ League, you’ve got to prepare seriously so that you’re ready to play.

"The game against Liverpool next week may be the last one of this run [in the team], I don’t know, or it may be the game at Chelsea that is my last one starting for now. But when you have a chance to play, you have to take advantage of it, whether you are starting or coming on from the bench.”

Today it is as a starter, and his confidence in his team-mates is evident. “We’re playing well, we’ve got great self-belief, we’re full of optimism and hope and we feel good about coming up against Chelsea.”
