Yes, its not for two years, but qualifiers have already started some places, and Europe starts in the fall, plus we have the probably long debate over if South Africa can/will actually host the event. So basically plenty to talk about. First, a bit of news, or actually a quote, that really made me go :unsure2: about South Africa hosting the event. Now, Sepp Blatter has been making headlines for his disgusting comments saying footballers are slaves, but he has actually said something much more interesting, and less stupid. “I have spoken to three possible, not only possible, but three associations and countries that would be able to stage the World Cup in one year’s time,” Blatter said in an interview broadcast on Thursday by Sky News. “They need one year (to prepare).” I understand that it might just be precautionary, but imo, a precaution would be having one place chosen, not 3. 3 makes it sound like these places are going to be bidding to see who will be the one to host the tournament. And to admit you have been doing this just makes it seem like they dont have much confidence in South Africa. Of course we'll probably have to wait for '09 and the Confederations Cup to determine anything, so still lots of time. Another interesting thing to discuss are what are these 3 other places? My bet would be on either England, Spain, Austrailia or the USA. Personally I hope its not here, because I would like to travel lol, but it would be nice. I think England is most likely though. England must most definitely be one. They'd be able to host it with a years notice I agree with you about Spain and the USA being two of the three. But I hope it does go ahead in africa, as long as they can sort out their problems. Hosting the world cup will be so beneficial for their economy and people. Honestly why do they bother giving high hopes and then beating them down, and Septic Bladder saying there are three possible candidates to replace them. Its a waste of advertising for South Africa and the nations people were looking forward to it. But then again, issues arise, it happened in 2006, even though not a lot happened, but a lot happened during the 2002 world cup, Since it was the first world cup to be co-hosted, and obviously Korea and Japan had a lot of history. Problems came from stadiums and ticketing and security problems, even childish fights over naming the competition, (i.e FIFA wanted Japan-Korea, because J came before K in the alphabet and Korea wanted to have their nation first and put it in the French order Coree/Japon. All stupid) But it worked out in the end and it helped too countries come together for a while. So, I think FIFA should be optimistic at this time and put some faith and confidence in South Africa. Even if they maybe off schedule they have two years to quick up, two years can be enough. About the possible three. Its good to have contingency plans, but they should have confidence in South Africa. Although your option about Australia could happen but I honestly think it would be bad timing for the country. It would be too rushed. First of all World Cups take a lot of effort and perfect timing. That means games are held in Australias major cities, it would cut AFL and NRL seasons, and usually they are played during that time which is deep in the season. Even if NRL and AFL games are played on Friday & Saturday night and arvo Sunday, the pitches would be worn out. It would be too sudden to stage it in Australia. And our stadiums aren't quite good. In terms of capacity, the biggest capacity staidums are the Cricket grounds but it really sucks watching football at a cricket ground. I would love it in Australia one day, even if it would be held in the winter--- actually that would be better for the players, seeing our summer would be too hot and they'd die of heat strokes and dehydration , it would be good in Australia but maybe in 8 years time. Football is still young in this country. Edited by lilcookie, Aug 5 2008, 01:45 AM.

Its been a pretty interesting day, so far I'd say the biggest surprises are Scotlands loss to Macedonia, France's loss to Austria, and Romania's home 3-0 loss to Lithuania. Italy and England won, Italy barely, Di Natale scored a goal right at the death, and England had a disappointing first half. |
