Okay, so obviously the team hasnt gotten off to the start any of us Arsenal fans hoped for. Alot of people have been trying to figure out how the team has gone from being very close to winning the league to already practically being out of it. Which of the above do you think is the main reason for the poor start? Please vote and explain why you picked your choice. Non-Arsenal fans I'd love to hear your opinions too.

its our defence its absolutely shocking............we lack height and speed (apart frm clichy whos like speedo gonzalez)

and another big thing is that we ned a good leader to influence the squad even if it isnt going our way he should try and uplift the team and gallas is defenitly not the man to do it..........

we definetely need a new goal keeper cos it seems weve been letting in some powerful shots and almunia cant even clear it and hes defeneilty not the same player like he was last season ......i sometimes wish lehmann was still here

we also need replacements for flamini and hleb....eventhough nasri is gud we r still short on them

we need some experienced footballers that have been around for a while

we also need to remember that sexy football is good but they need to be more aggresive and poach some goals like eduardo used to do and not think of creating a beautiful finishes all the time they should do that wen they're 2-0 up

and lastly i MISS eduardo sooo much i cant wait till hes back!!!

well i think it's because we havent strengthed our defence, but to be honest Toure, Gallas have all played international level so they are good players, but they just let themselves down by not defending right, they also know that their places are safe, i think if they knew there places were under threat they'd perform so much better, but that shouldnt be the way it is.

i also think not having a CDM in the starting line-up is also letting us down, i think Denlison has done good there so far, but he isnt defensive minded, so i would play Song, seeing as we dont have an other options.

I think we need a LEFT footed player that could play on the left and he's got to be fast, also he's got to stick to the left wing and not go inside. remember in our unbeaten season how we always attacked down the left and caused so many problems the pace of clichy, and if we had the pace of another there i think that would really help. although i love Nasri on the side, but again he likes to drift infield like Rosicky does to.

Having Gallas as captian is not good either, he doesnt influence the team enough, he also is the 1 making to many mistakes in defence!
i would love to see Cesc as captian but i do think he's a litte to young for it, he'd have a bit to much pressure on his shoulders, he's only 21! and he still has areas of his game where he could improve.
i think the only other option is Kolo Toure he would make a good captian.

we pass the ball TO much around the box, whats wrong with taking 25 yard shots. we play beautiful build up play but when a player has it in the box or could have a clear shot then they should take the shot.

Also maybe we need another striker like a fox in the box or something, a striker who is going to get us 25-35 goals a season

we have aot of young players, but if we keep the squad the way it is, we wont be winning the prem for another 3 years time

I think our main problem is the lack of leadership. Gallas has had a chance to show that he makes a good captain, but he hasn't seemed to have seized that opportunity. A good captain is an inspiration for the team and motivates them. He shoudl be telling them that they need to pull their socks up and perform better against the teams they have played recently- but he seems to be making the mistakes, rather than leading on the pitch.
I know Cesc is still young, but to be honest, he seems like the only leader on the pitch to me. I wouldn't want to give him the captaincy at his age right now, but I don't think we have any other option. I mean others may say Toure is an option, but he doesn't seem to be a leader on the pitch and he seems too quiet.
If you look at Cesc, he dictates play in the midfield, and he carries on playing with passion right until the last minute. He had the belief that Arsenal could clinch that goal against Sunderland. Yeah, he hasn't been playing good lately, but I think that has more to do with the fact that he doesn't have an experiencd midfielder next to him.

The defence is bad- we needed to buy more defenders over the summer, as well as an experienced midfielder.

Attacking wise- I think Adebayor hasn't been playing very well. I think Robin and Ade should be dropped for a few matches for Vela and Bendtner. Wenger should put more trust in the latter two.

In my opinion its sort of a culmination of things, but in general I think it comes down mainly to the mentality of the team, which is determined by the other factors.

I dont think our 'captain' Gallas is a good enough leader, and since there are so few veteran players on the team I just feel like alot rides with him and the young players should be able to look to him as an example. He imo does not do a good enough job first at his own position, and secondaly motivating and keeping the team working together. I think he lets his emotion get the best of him too many times and that has a bad effect on the team in whole.

Also I think Flamini leaving, and then not replacing him with a CM has been a major problem. Again, because Flamini really worked well with Cesc and together they lead the team. They knew each other well enough for Flamini to when to sit back and play a more defensive role and vice versa. Plus Flamini was so much more of a leader and motivator on the pitch than Denilson is. Denilson is fine player, but he doesnt run around from box to box, motivate the team forward, and get stuck in like Flamini would, and I think that was something we really needed to replace once he left. Also we let Gilberto leave, and while on the field he might not have had great season last year, he was still another experienced player that we never replaced, and I think alot of this inconsistency is because of our lack of experience.

I also think that team has been way to complacent this season, getting back to the fancy play but no end result, wait for the other team to score before we play hard, ways of two and three years ago. I dont know why they are like this though, do they think because of our style the goals will eventually come no matter what, and we can be complacent? Is it because we have a rather thin squad, and thus poor individual performances wont likely mean a stint on the bench? Is it because when they win they are hailed as youthful exuberant technically superior players, but when they lose they are let off because they are now "inexperienced and immature", and will "learn from it and move on"?

I think the problem is a combination of these things, most of which lead to having no veteran leader players who will motivate and get on players backs when they are being complacent. And unfortunatly this is not a problem that comes down to the team, Denilson most likely cant change his personality and age and become a leader overnight, it is a problem that comes down to Arsene Wenger. He is the one who appointed Gallas captain, allowed Flamini to leave (which might not be his fault, but), he did not sign a midfield leader to play next to Cesc, and so on.

I voted Other because I think it's because we are not shooting enough!! The amount of times our players could score if they actually had a shot!!! It really bugs me... I am sitting there watching it and screaming SHOOT and the telly for most of the game!! ^o)

We could get some good vital goals with goals from outside the penalty box instead of just trying to walk them in the net all the time... SHOOT DAMN IT SHOOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was going to give my opinion earlier, but it seemed I never had enough time to sit and write what I wanted to say. Now that I have nothing to do, here it goes *cracks knuckles*...

I agree with what everyone else has said. It definately is a combination of several different problems that are leading to such a downfall.

First of all, the defense (if you can call it that). It is absolutely horrendous, especially on set plays. I don't know if it's a lack of communication or what, but it seems that every time there is a free kick or corner, there is at least one player from the oppossing team that has time and space that should not be given, and 90% of the time it appears to be the man that Gallas is to be marking. Which leads me nicely into my next point...

Leadership. Most of you have already questioned the decision to let Gallas remain captain, and I most certainly join you guys. He is way too tempermental to be wearing the armband and I think by giving it to someone a little more level-headed like a Toure, would bring a calmness and hopefully confidence to the team. Even though he played very little last season, I think having the veteran influence of Gilberto in the midfield really helped, and now seeing how the team operates when he's no longer there, I'm sure of it.

Continuing with the loss of Gilberto (and Flamini), I think Wenger not signing a CDM has contributed to our struggles. With either or both those guys in the lineup, you could tell that the team had tremendous confidence in attacking because they knew those guys would be there, ready to defend, in case of a counter. Now with Denilson and Song, I don't think the team has that same confident mentality.

Lastly, the lack of shooting, and the dendency to want to score "the perfect goal". I mean I know they're Arsenal, and they want to play "the most beautiful football in the world", hell, that's why I fell in love with them, but for god's sake shoot the damn ball once in a while. It seems like they'll go 80 minutes of playing their way - passing inside the the box - and when they finally realize that it isn't working then they decide it might be a good idea to take that 25 yard shot, and by that time it's almost too late. I played softball for almost 15 years, and my dad always said, "You'll never hit the ball if you don't take the bat off your shoulder." The same thing goes with football. Just take a chance because a few shots are bound to go in!

With all that being said, I really do hope things turn around, because this team has the potential to win some trophies. We've seen it against Newcastle (granted it's Newcastle  ), Blackburn, Twente; they definately have the ability and talent to play amazing football.

Oh, and if Wenger doesn't do some serious dealing in January I am going to rip my hair out

i think it generally is lack of mental strength we don't look as determined as last season...and sometimes our experienced palyers don't take charge..

and maybe a change in captain could change this?

and i just think atm we are inconsistant...

buyt arsenal alwayyyss!!
