Gallas stripped of captaincy

William Gallas has been stripped of the Arsenal captaincy and will not play against Manchester City, according to Sky Sports News sources.

Gallas spoke of unrest in the Arsenal camp on Thursday and also revealed details of a bust-up during half-time in the recent 4-4 draw with Tottenham.

A number of former players have been quick to criticise Gallas for the outburst and it now appears as though Arsene Wenger has acted quickly to discipline the Frenchman.

It is understood that Gallas, who was handed the armband at the start of last season, will not travel with the rest of the squad ahead of Saturday's game at Man City.

Reports suggest that goalkeeper Manuel Almunia will lead out the side.

I don't care if he has been stripped of it.. he damn well should be coming out like that and starting a load of shit about the Arsenal 'team spirit' even if it is true, he didn't need to share it with the whole world!! That's not going to help us is it? Twat! <_<

Please give Fabregas the captain's band!!! :D

No, its good you created this topic, its what this section is here for, i would have posted something yesterday but ive been real busy, so its good someone did :D

First, on Gallas rant yesterday, I understand where he is coming from, i think there are probably alot of internal issues in the club right now that need to be sorted out. However, going to France and making these statements to the press is 100% wrong, the club should not have its dirty laundry put on show just so one person can make a statement to make themselves look better. Gallas has never been a great captain, and this might have taken it one step too far.

Second, this leads to reports today that Gallas has been stripped of the captaincy which are yet to actually be confirmed by Arsenal. I dont know whether this is super great or just another step in the denial process, but i hope its the first. I hope this shows that Arsene is agreeing there is a leadership problem here and he's going to sort it out, and hopefully this will lead to the signing of a couple experienced players. Im worried though that Gallas losing the captaincy is just a showing of you dont disagree with the boss, and that Arsene is going to continue to ignore the problem of inexperience and leadership by just throwing the captaincy to someone else.

Third, I really hope that Clichy is chosen to be captain if this is true that Gallas is out.

Gallas seems to be very badly advised, i remember when he was with us whenever there was an international break there seemed to be some sort of Gallas story coming out. I can't believe some of the stuff he has come out with in the last year and a bit, he really should know better. Obviously Gallas was with us for a good few years so i know quite abit about him as a player and i was suprised when he was made captain at arsenal because it always came across to me that he could be very mentally weak not a quality u want in a captain and i think he has shown that. Although it's never been offically conformed it's pretty well known at the Bridge that Gallas did threaten to score an own goal if he wasn't going to get he's own way (whether he actually would or not is a different matter) as well as refusing to turn up for our pre season tour trip just before he left.

He's a 31 year old man, very experienced player who should probably know better and if i was an arsenal fan and he was saying these sorts of things in public i'd be really angry, true or not.

Priya, what you're hearing may be right, I've been hearing about it since yesterday night but I wasn't quite sure if they were legit. Willy has really had some WTF moments since he got the captain's armband. I personally believe that lil pep talk in which everyone seemed disinterested said it all really.

Anywho...CLICHY FOR THE ARMBAND!!

what is going on?
or should is ay wtf is gallas on..what drugs is he smoking?!?! :blink2:

seriously what was gallas thinking seriously?
i kno for a fact that tony adams in fact i kno every past captain of our wonderful club would never EVER come out and say their was a problem.

gallas has made some stupid decision's in an arsenal shirt but this is right up there with his famous cock-ups.

and at the end of the day any one who slags of the club of my life is a w****r and what makes it 1000000000000% time worse is that the MAN who is supposed to be taking control of this gift we call AFC is taking advantage of it just so his name is cleared..well i tell you something WILLIAM you are stupid...you have lost respect of every fan that loves this club and would die to be in your position and most of all you have lost respect of one of the most genuine talented people taht some refer to as god...arsene wenger and if he has dropped you he has mine and id say quite a few fans backing..

william galls you are a complete and utter t*t and you don't understand how much it hurts me to saay this about one of my boys...but at the end of the day..you only have yourself to blame if you dont know how much of an honour it to captian this beautiful team you have a problem.
has the outcome of this whole saga given you what you want?
you are kno longer captain of the greatest club on earth
your not playing football 4 your team 2morrow.
all this just so you feel better about yourself?
mayte you need a kick up the arse and need to sort yourself out.

ive read alot of articles in the past year saying that all gallas thinks about is me me me and i was one of very few that had a glimmer of hope that you hadturned over a new leave but then you do this..personally i am disgusted in what that bad excuse 4 a captain has done...if you dont appreciate what you HAD why should you take up a place that other people desrve? maybe you should take the advuce of what you sed about your so called teammates...it wont surprise if our wonderful players have lost all respect for you because i bte at least have the people on the planet would agree with them.

well done wenger for putting gallas in his place..i hope you mind is clear of what you wanted it clear of.now jsut 85% of arsenal fans are disgusted in you..

well done william

gael clichy should be given the captaincy he is genuinly the most dedicated perosn to arsenal well one of 3 including cescy and kolo.
but who gives 100% every single game?
who kept on going even tho he scored an own goal against villa?
who is the best left back in the world hehe?
who is now 50000% mopre of the player that cashley was in his prime.?

ill tell you who.. gael clichy and he should be captain of this wonderful club he's like a tony adams at left back..he plays at left back ffs but how influential is he? people alway take notice if cesc isn;t in the team and i can see why obv, but what would we do without gael clichy? seriously just think of that..and i tell ya we wouldn't be in 4th i kno he is only one player and is a left back but he is soo important to this club and all the effort he put in last year and what he has done this year he deserves to be the captain of this gift to football we call arsenal football club :D

and if clichy aint captain
i want Cescy Or King Kolo :D

cmon lads.. :D
even if your ex captain doesn't believe in you we all do!
we are arsenal and we are the greatest teamon this planet!
fuck the critics..we are arsenal and we aint in a crisis the crisis has been dropped (william gallas) and every arsenal fan i beg you get behind arsenal they need us now more than ever!!

victory through harmony.
united we stand divide we fall.lets get back the team spirit of the greatest team on earth.
we are arsenal and we are back.
watch out!
lets show them all taht we are men
and we are on this earth to play football and that we believe in ourselves even if our so called captain doesnt!
have faaiiithhh!!!
IAWT

cmon ladddsss!

Emma! Bless youu!

i could tell that you feel strongly about this!

I seriously think Clichy should be given the captain band, he may not be the loudest on the pitch but hes one of the best. and like emma said, hes kept going. Yeh hes had some rough patches the past few games hes come back out of that dressing room and given us what we wanted.

He also just wants to get on with the game, he plays to the whistle, he may get knocked down but hes back up again and away he goes, hes an example to our younger guns and i think giving him this responsibility will give him more chance to shine.

And maybe we see more of Gael when he knows hes now a leader, he'll argue his case and he'll give support but he wont critiscise us. And if it is, its constructive criticism.

Gael Clichy For Captain!

I'm supposed to be on a break, but breaking that for a minute cos of all the drama at Arsenal. Can't believe gallas come out and said all that stuff. It should be kept in the dressing room.

Do we have a natural leader right now?
Clichy- a posibility. Arsenal through and through, and a fans favourite. Maybe too emotional? He was really upset after the spurs game, and we want a captain to be picking people up.

Cesc- he's young. Too much responsibilty?Maybe it will revitalise his form some what, if he is given it. But I think he needs time to develop still. And there would be a lot of stick as people would think Wenger is only giving him the captaincy to keep him at Arsenal this year.

Kolo- He hasn't been playing a lot recently. And he's quiet. But he is one of the oldest...so he would be able to deal with the responsibilty. And he is sensible enough not to make stupid comment in the press. Plus, he is vice-captain so it would be assumed that he would be made captain...it would be strange if wenger promoted someone about him, and he remained vice-captain.

Almunia could also be captain-he did well that one time he was....but then again...it would be preferable to not give the captaicy to a goalie as they are on the line all the time.

And will older players listen to cesc or clichy? They are significantly younger and that could be a problem with some of the older players. ....could you see Silvestre or Eboue taking/listening to orders from Cesc or Clichy, cos I can't.

If only we had kept Flamini. He would have made an awesome leader. He was always trying to push the players on.But no point crying over spilt milk.

And, it's not certain that he has been stripped of the captaincy. Maybe he has been stopped from playing a few games, and then he will revert to his role again once people have calmed down...I'm hoping that isn't true though. Or he could have picked up a knock....

Ok. A few sources have come out saying that Almunia will captain tomorrow, with cesc becoming permanent captain.

Obviously treat sources with speculation, but that source yesterday said Gallas was going to be stripped of the captaincy. Probably a guess though....

Whoever is captain will have a tough job on their hands, that's for sure.

I keep looking on the arsenal site.

Nothing has been confirmed on there.

But all other news sites say that he has been stripped of it and dropped.

I want to hear Wenger's view.

He lost that at birmingham.

Whilst him telling everybody was stupid, I am worried about what he said. Fights happening, people being disrespectful. This seems like a team in meltdown. As I previously said, the next captain is going to have to do a heck of a lot of work in that dressing room to resolve the problems going on. Remember that meme that was leaked to the press- the one where wenger was encouraging the players to work for each other and things- possibly a sign of their having been conflict previousl?
And why were there arguments during half time of the spurs match? If I remember right, Arsenal played well in the first half. They played well up until the 90th minute or so.

Its all good and well that gallas has been sacked, but that is not the end of things. This team needs to sort itself out. A lot of people blamed Gallas for us doing badly because of his lack of leadership, if the team, under the new captain, doesn't pick up then that will have been proved wrong. This team in general has an attitude problem which needs to be addressed.

This really doesnt sound like the Arsenal we all know.

Whatever happened to Victory Through Harmony.

As a club, and its bad to say this but its the truth, the whole club, players and fans included have lost the harmony.

And even though i hate to put down the team i will always support, win lose or draw, i think that the club needs to get together, take a good luck at everything, stop blaming people and accept that we have lost to teams we shouldnt have. We cant just magically make that loss a win.

But we can still turn everything around, this season aint over yet.

Come on Arsenal, take a look at the bad points and the good points and concentrate on them good things. Arsenal will come back.
We dont just gradually fade away.

Come on Arsenal. Remember football is a team game. And no matter who happens to be leading that team out there, we all work together.

Arsenal Forvever. IAWT!

Yep. The team do need to get together. And in some ways, I think Cesc would be best at bringing people together. Adebayor said that he arranged social meetings outside of the training grounds. But then again, maybe other players do that as well, and we just don;t kno about it.

Yep. And it's driving me insane. You just have to go look in arsenal mania to see the loss in harmony amongst fans. Some of the stuff they say on there is shocking.
