The Arsenal captain was jeered on his return to Spain and appeared to have been targeted by missiles, thought to be coins and boxes, as he took a second-half corner.

Fabregas showed an object to referee Tom Henning Ovrebo and Uefa are now awaiting the Norwegian official's report before deciding whether to act.

"It was something gold, I don't know what - but that is football, no problem," said Fabregas.

A sensational over-head kick from Emmanuel Adebayor means the score is currently 1-1 on aggregate, with the second leg to be played at the Emirates.

And Fabregas has revealed his pride at the way Arsene Wenger's men fought back from going a goal down to earn a well-deserved draw at El Madrigal.

Fabregas said: "I feel really proud as captain of this team. When you see your team-mates playing like warriors it is really good to play next to them. They should be proud as well.

"We showed great character in Villarreal and we showed how determined we are to win something this season.

"I think we could have done a bit better but we can't complain after losing Manuel (Almunia) and William (Gallas). To do that and still come back and get a 1-1 is not a bad result."

Meanwhile, the Football Association yesterday wrote to Arsenal and asked for their observations following the allegation that Fabregas spat at Hull assistant manager Brian Horton after the FA Cup quarter-final victory last month.

Fabregas "categorically" denied the offence and Arsenal have one week to respond to the FA.
