Hey!

I just got on to DCD to give you all a little explanation on what I've been up to these past two-three months, and why I've spontaneously dropped off the face of the Earth.

So, as you may know my major is Environmental Science with an undeclared minor (I'm thinking Biology). In my Lab Class we have a semester project, and in my regular lecture class we have a big semester project. Here's the fun part, and the reason for my absence:

Lab Class: We got together in a group to decide what we wanted to study in the Gunnison Basin, and decided on the Coal Creek Watershed; an area of the valley that has been significantly damaged by heavy mining operations by three simultaneous mines. Multiple organizations exist to clean it up, and one is a superfund site. Our project, involves monitoring the water quality using macro-invertebrates as health indicators.

(Species are divided on tolerance level. Tolerance level 3= max. So we multiply the combined total of each species in their category by the tolerance level, this gives us the total water quality rating)

And we're also taking Ph readings, heavy metal samples, and using vegetation and colluviums (rock/soil mix) as contamination indicators. And we've been in contact with local water treatment, forestry and BLM managers, to supplement our background data to build fluid charts for this.
Then we get to compile this into a presentation due at the end of the semester. W00t!

Tons of fun.

Bio class:
Then our biology class has a service project. I think I'm going to do this as a solo one. WSC has Kentucky bluegrass growing on its lawns, and right over the road is sagebrush and desert soil. So what I'm aiming to do is do a presentation on WSC's grass, including how much water it consumes, and the better alternatives, and the stupidly cheap and beneficial methods for making the grass more drought tolerant.

Have I been geeking out?

Anyways, I'll try to be more active. I've just been having tons of fun with my classes. Too bad I don't have either of them next semester, my professors are awesome.

So that's what I'm up too.
