Last night on nightline, they talked about AVATAR...and how those blue people have their own language. I hope there's a translator thing with words in english down at the bottom of the screen... |

Midnight opening, Twi? ^_^ I'd like to ask for a slightly more... um... elaborate opinion on it, if I may. |

Looks like Twi liked it. What was the language a mix of? I know there was african in there...maybe a bit of german... I know there were about 4 different languages blended into the Na'vi language...that much I remember. EDIT: Just found it on the Nightline website Part Slavic, somewhat Asian, and with a spicing of African and Native American. Wow...try blending all that... |

...yes. I meant more than 'I-just-got-back-from-the-movie-my-god-it's-early-in-the-morning-but-I-must-tell-people-to-see-it!' gushing. Which is a recommendation all in itself, I just want something a little more... comprehensive. |

The premise, is that humankind finds a habitable planet, and moves to claim it as a second Earth. When they arrive they find it teeming with life, and a sentient civilization, prompting military action in attempts to subjugate the native populace. ... That is all I know. But I'm sure it's going to be good, especially if Twi's head was about to explode from seeing it. |

Well, first off, if you see this movie you must see it in 3D. It's a visual masterpiece, and the vibrant, living world they've created is all the more immersive that way. It's not a gimmick; nothing jumps or pops out at you just for the sake of reminding you that, hey, this movie is in 3D! Even if the story or acting sucked, it would be worth seeing Avatar just to see Pandora and its inhabitants in all their glory. Fortunately, this movie isn't all bark and no bite (James Cameron has been working on the sceenplay on and off since 1994, after all). Humanity's primary interest in Pandora is a highly valuable mineral they call 'unobtanium' (though it's never actually explained what makes it so valuable). It's not a government or military presence, but a corporate one, employing ex-military as mercenaries to protect their operations from the dangerous wildlife and hostile natives (the Na'vi). Jake Sully is a crippled former Marine whose twin brother, a scientist bound for Pandora to participate in the Avatar program (remotely-controlled human-Na'vi hybrid bodies, used to interact and negotiate with the natives), is killed; since they've already created an Avatar for his brother, and Jake is genetically compatible with it, they approach him to replace his brother to avoid wasting their investment. In return, the corporation will pay to have Jake's legs fixed (an easy enough procedure, apparently... if you can afford it). The fact that Jake becomes the first and only soldier Avatar sets things up for him to be an agent of change on Pandora, one way or another, as the Na'vi accept him into their midst to teach him their ways (as they put it, no human has ever been able to learn their ways before because the scientist' heads are already too full). Jake begins to question his motives and loyalty as he gets caught up in the conflict between the expansionist human industry (which it is implied has already ruined Earth's ecosystem) and the Na'vi (and to a lesser extent, the scientists he's working with who are studying Pandora's biology and trying to keep violence from being humanity's answer). The movie's message may be a little heavyhanded for some (I heard a few audience members making fun of it during the credits, though none of them sounded too intelligent ;P - along the lines of "Hur hur, I thought we paid to see an action movie, not Pocahontas"), but I found it to be relevant and not at all overwrought in the context of the story. Overall, aside from the abundant action, the movie had a lot of small, serene moments that were just beautiful. Of course, the final battle scene at the end of the movie is pretty epic too. ^_^ If you're a scifi/fantasy geek (and I'm.. assuming most of you are), this might be the best movie you see all year. |

Noted, I'll take a look. Also, there's Heath Ledger's Last Movie Ever. Something about an Imaginarium. Kathryn wants me to see it. Trust me, my family and I will see it over Christmas Break. Along with Sherlock Holmes, which isn't so much about Holmes as its about Robert Downey Jr. being awesome. |

Just got back from Avatar. I give the special effects a 10/10 and the storyline a 2.5/10. I did like the movie a lot, but if you were to strip away the epic visuals, I don't think the movie could have done well on it's story alone. |

2.5/10? That's pretty week. I'd give it about a 5/10. If they'd done more with Eywa I might have rated it higher, but they were basically like "Here's this thing" and then, later, "It's exactly what it sounds like." |

Hmm, I dunno. I guess I'd maybe give it a 3.5/10 for story. It had it's novelties, but 90% of it just seemed like a pretty recycled plot to me. That and the romance was so insanely forced. >_< "I love you." "I love you too." *Blue people sex* |

See it at IMAX; no other theatre is big enough to contain Cameron's ego. Also, I'm only interested in it because it's essentially training wheels for a Gunm/Battle Angel Alita movie. Panzerkunst <3 |
