[ End of the last thread, if you missed it. ]

Karyxmon lowered her head, exhaling a thick smog from deep in her throat. "You survived!" she snarled. "And you-- I saw you! You were a monster, you were-- why are you alive?"

"I am a monster," Alitheia said. "Shriek at me all you want, the girl you wish to speak to is as dead as her clone."

The fox raised her head, her fur rippling in confusion. "What are you?"

"A virus," it said. "Or a reasonable imitation of one. Reasonable enough you should have seen this coming." It tilted its head. "What did you think would happen, trying to create an entity born out of data from a virus? It was a poorly conceived plan from its inception-- your Master doesn't fully comprehend the nature of Mirage."

Karyxmon snapped her teeth. "Comprehends enough," she snarled. "As do I. You're the last ones standing. I kill you, we win, and she comes back."

The area they were in changed.

But Nova did not care.

There was a momentarily imagine of something... familiar. But it was gone as quickly as its shadow was seen. When everything settled there was the Fox. Pandora's Fox and it was being extremely defensive.

But Nova did not care.

It seemed surprised to see what Chaos had become, Alitheia. Apparently Pandora did not survive the process. Something that the Fox seemed to be taking hard. It was under the impression that if it killed them it would get Pandora back.

Still, Nova did not care.

But was going to stand there and let himself be killed, not these puppets. These fools.

He stepped forward, and in a flash of heat and fire he assume his combat form. He then quickly summon his, Edge's, whatever it didn't matter anymore, great-sword and swung it. Creating a massive rift of fire and wind that swirled towards the fox.

He then took off forward.

"Nova! Wait!" Called Frost.

"Damnit!" Said Enix, "RiseSuukoudramon Waro Digivolve too.." Enix then rose into the air, siphoning data from the area to help him Digivolve.

Nova clicked a button on his Digivice and a golden beam of light flew out and hit Frost.

He immediately rose into the air as well, "SnowVeemon Golden armor digivolve too..."

There was then an explosion on golden energy.

He saw.

That face, that force, the impossible magnificent form. He saw. As the world spat and spasmed and shifted and swirled around them. Too brief a flash, but too powerful, too vast.

Was it...could it be...

His hands flickered, fingering each of the tools on his person, each essential for the fragile framework plans they had made together in the dark. He wondered if this was the moment. He wondered.

Then the moment was past, and there were new figures. One dead. One alive.

Nova moving. And he was not alone.

Another figure was moving with him, Simon Grey with his eyes punctuated by dark circles and his hands trembling and his body burning and there was such terrible grief in him. There were no thoughts in his head, no feelings, just this soul-shaking desire that was almost lust except purer, more intense, more perfect. It wasn't just his body burning with this feeling: it was the fundamental foundation of his being.

We win, and she comes back.

A promise. Something unexpected. Something that intuitively clicked with the information she had given them and what he had seen and what had happened and what he had lost. Fake fake fake, at odds with his memories of what they should be and all of them were stronger or weaker or different than they were supposed to be but maybe there was a promise there, something Simon could seize.

comes back.

We win, and they come back.

Caster, Leader, Agreni. Was it all a game? Was that why they looked fake? Then fucking fine, but at least he could play to win. He could get back everything he had lost. He'd never had that chance before, and he was not going to lose it now.

Suriumon snorted. "Seem to be skipping your monologuing step," he said.

Alitheia's expression had dropped and hardened, briefly displaying a flash of teeth. "We shouldn't have," it said.

"Because it makes you wrong?" Suriumon asked.

To which the virus smiled again,

"You know," Alitheia started, as Nova and Grey tore past it, and the Digimon started to burn with an odd, light. "I admire humans."

"Which is why you chose to consume your host," Suriumon growled.

"There's something to be said for the species. There's such... determination, will, power, inside so many of them. All the ones who come here are the best humanity has to offer, but even this one, not a traditional Chosen, was capable of some remarkable things. Or should have been." It looked out the corner of its eye, to Suriumon. "The goal is cooperation, not consumption. We are meant to complete each other."

"Complete?"

Nearby, Enix's digivolution sphere burst, and he was no different than he had been when he'd first summoned it. Nearby, Frost's armor sphere burst, showering hard golden light on the ground and leaving behind the little FrostVeemon.

Still the humans charged.

"Complete," it repeated. "Humans are so like viruses. They are given such a disadvantaged physical form, and instead of settling into their rightful place in the food chain they adapted. And not just themselves. Rather than live with what is given to them, they transformed the environment to suite their needs, destroyed and combined and manufactured incredible things out of their resources to force the environment to bow to them, to become apex predators without any real right to be. To fuse the two into a singular unit augments the advantages of each and brings us remarkably closer to perfection. Not there, of course, but it is almost palpable."

Karyxmon shot forward. She barreled through Nova's attack, then accelerated to impossible levels, leaving afterimages as an instant later she smashed into Nova's chest and threw her head back, sending him flying backward. She snapped around with the same impossibly ferocity, her teeth around Grey, spinning and hurling him back alongside Nova. The movement was so abrupt that they wound up landing not even a second apart, and Karyxmon splayed before them, the power of the Book of Cosmos wheeling freely in shimmering, brassy petals.

"Do you know how humans are capable of doing what they do?" Alitheia continued. "Foresight. Intelligence. Not just short-term predator intellect, but long-term possibilities, incredible complexity, creativity to conceive of aberrant solutions to apparently unrelated problems. To assess the world and utilize it without our innate benefits... and then to see what that creativity can do when wielded by a virus. It's remarkable, exciting."

It looked at the two splayed in front of it. Its eye twitched slightly.

"They are also obnoxiously emotional and in desperate need of having their baser instincts curtailed. What the hell are you two doing!"

They had forgotten. It wasn't surprised -- it had been a bit of time since they'd had a proper encounter with this creature, her murder of Caster notwithstanding -- but a moment to speak, a moment to consider, and they might have remembered what she was capable of while wielding the Book. Instead they were consumed by grief and anger, utterly unthinking, and now the time that could have spent stalling and scheming and strategizing had been wasted. Worse than wasted.

Because Karyxmon was angry now, her ninth tail unfurling, and they could not hope to stand against her.

Nova was sent flying back and was slammed into the ground by the massive force of Karyxmon. He laid there motionless for a moment, until his body began to burn.

He was then engulfed in flames and a moment later the flames rose and reformed back into Nova's human form. Except now... he seem more frayed. He was angry, he was confused, and it was starting to show physically. His eyes were burning red, and his skin was cracked in multiple places, glowing a burning red where the skin was cracked.

Once again they faced another impossible ordeal, it was almost comical at this point. They continued to be pushed. Pushed, Pushed, and Pushed.

And he would do what he was good at, what he thought he was good at.

He was going to push back.

The tamer rose into the air, and once more took on a more flame-like form and began to spin, agumenting his speed with wind elemental energy until he was a whirling torrent of fury filled flames and raging wind.

The tamer then releasing a raging firestorm of blasts upon the Fox. It maybe powerful, but he was stubborn beyond reason, and planned to be a complete fucking annoyance.

---

Frost and Enix however, were completely confused.

"What the hell is going on? How are we supposed to fight something that we can't even digivolve against?" Asked Enix, looking towards the Wolf and Virus.

"...She looks a fair bit angry as well." Added Frost.

"Pandora being viral goo I imagine has something to do with that."

It happened too fast, and Gate was too busy reeling to stop it.

Pandora, dead? Their master's favorite, his errand child, the one he had resurrected from nothing? How? Why? There was too much they didn't understand, too much they didn't know, and even if he thought they might be able to hold back her terrible power (and he had no such assurances, he had vague thoughts and sketches of plans but all would require too much of himself and he could not afford to risk it, not yet).

There was more, of course. There was the terrible riddle of their altered forms--mere facsimiles of data. Not visible on Mirage--there the illusion was too perfect, and the Alters stood out because they were so distinct. But here...

And if so, what did that make of Gate, and his hope of defiance.

It changes nothing but the context.

A comforting thought, if only he could be sure it were true.

But the virus was right. She was too powerful now, and if there was an alternative Gate was determined to find it.

So he did three things at once, uncertain of two but utterly confident of the third.

He could not be sure whether his abilities could hold her back now, but he had to try all the same. As Simon hit the ground, he snapped his left hand and willed a portal into existence to try and spirit the Tamer from danger (for even if he was but a shadow of a Tamer, his Destiny might still protect Gate long enough for him to enact his mad plan). Second, he tried to circumvent further fighting: he snapped with his right hand and tried to dispel the fire hurtling for the fox, to hold back her rage long enough to buy them some time.

The portals might fail. But his words would not. They would reach her, even if she chose to listen. Because Gate's voice was mental, it communicated at the level of minds and souls. It could be ignored, but it could not go unheard.

He shouted with all his fury and desperation, all his fierce hope to level the playing field and see Nomis' vision realized. A sharp mental shout, piercing in a way mere sound could not be, amplifed by their shared bond as creatures still more unnatural even then the shadows of Tamers they were surrounded by, figures of power yet.

Hold, Karyx! he willed, with all the strength he could manage. Please! If we are to save her--to save them and he beamed all the faces of their siblings he could find, all the fallen who had lost their lives in pursuit of their mad ambitions. We have to know. What happened to Pandora? To these creatures? To this Island? And-

He focused on Levia's face with all his mental strength. Why did you take them?

Alitheia looked down to Suriumon. Suriumon looked up to it.

"She has my book," he said. "Still."

"Yes."

Nothing more needed to be said; they understood each other. Suriumon peeled away from the virus, headed toward the other Digimon. The virus turned its attention to the battle, to Nova specifically. He was furious.

What did he have to be furious for?

Out of all of them, he was the only one who had not lost anybody he had truly known in this ridiculous world. Its host's friend had died; its host had had allowed herself to die in turn. Grey had lost all of his partners not even within a full day of each other and in his grief allowed himself to be manipulated into allying with one of their enemies. The former had meant much more, of course, but the latter couldn't have helped matters.

Nova had lost people he had never met before this situation. His partners still surrounded him, still in-tact. It could understand under, but to express so much as to be blinded this way...

Perhaps the memory of Edge still lingered, and it was his fire that erupted now. Whatever the case, the boy had to be stopped.

Gate tried to do something, although in this strange world, under the light of her blinding energy, nothing seemed to come of it. The portal he attempted to summon failed; the fire he attempted to pull back remained burning, although it was just as likely it was because he had tried to suppress Nova's flame rather than an errant attack. The result wouldn't have changed either way.

Karyxmon almost met Nova again, but she vanished before they made impact and reappeared instantly on the other side of him, smashing heavy paws into his back and pinning him to the ground. Her jaws opened and she immediately snapped her teeth around his torso, biting deep into him.

The virus gritted its teeth and moved, a brief wave of rippling dark that coagulated alongside Gate.

"Do you have means of stopping our people from committing suicide?" it asked.

Behind, Suriumon had joined the other Digimon.

"She has my book," he repeated. "She's strong, but she's augmenting herself with the Book. We can't fight that."

Karyxmon did not hold.

She ripped away from her attempt at crushing Nova and looked over her shoulder, and her eyes fell upon Gate. She had never met Gate or Nomis, but she knew the scent of another clone right away. His questions pestered and confused her. How could he not know the answer to at least some of them?

Because he was working with them, the others, the obsolete originals, and the Master would not have graced him with the truth.

"Traitor," she snarled. "Traitor!"

Flames leapt from her tails, spiraled in the air, and tore across the battlefield, screaming toward Gate.

Karyxmon's attack may have worked, if it wasn't something Nova himself had personally done over a million times... or had he? Was his memories of doing so fake? Was he Nova? The real one? He wasn't so sure anymore.

Regardless, as Karyxmon flicked behind him, Nova once more turned himself into elemental fire, so when Karyxmon's claw came down upon him, she merely slashed through a raging fire, she probably would of burnt her claw if she wasn't omnipotent strong.

The flame then twirled and spirited itself away moving over towards Gate and Chaos.

Until it noticed the Fox fire off another attack, a fire attack.

Nova knew that this Fox was in part based off Surimon, and Surimon utilized a lot of elemental attacks. But at the same time if it was a true fire elemental attack... he could absorb it.

Nova then darted in front of the attack and regarded his more human form, he braced himself for the impact of the fire.

---

Enix looked over to Surimon, "So in short. We need to steal the book. That shouldn't be to hard. With the fox raging about."

"If we could use our Digivolved forms yeah. But like this we can't sneak up on her. You see how fast she moves." Said Frost.

"Guess we have to leave it up to Grey and the Virus... Nova doesn't seem to be to reliable right now."

"Yeah, he's acting like you on a bad day."

Oh, but this was bad.

His portals...he had been counting on his portals. That strange light was stopping him. He fingered his key and his knife and weighed his options. He doubted even she could cancel his abilities entirely--he would be allowed to struggle, as Levia had been--but he had lost his flexibility. He would not be able to move as freely or as easily as he had before.

The virus alighted besides him. "Would it matter if I did?" Gate asked. "We would still have her in front of us.

Their conversation became academic as the fox turned her attention towards him.

"TRAITOR!" she screamed, hurling fire towards him.

Gate's eye flashed. Every fiber of his being reacted against that accusation. "TRAITOR?" he roared back, with the same intense focus he'd used before, the full weight if his mind pressing against her thoughts. "THE BLOOD OF OUR SIBLINGS IS ON YOUR HANDS, SISTER. NOT MINE."

He bounded away, fishing out a handful of powder from one of the pouches at his side and drawing a silver-bladed knife with his right hand.

The fox moved. Simon tried to dodge, tried to drink in data and throw himself aside. Hard to say where he had succeeded or failed: however it went down, he wasn't fast enough. She caught him and tossed him aside, and then...

Simon flailed aside, running back as soon as he saw that terrible figure. Where Nova's anger seemed to have swelled to new heights, the fight had gone out of Simon all at once. He was good, but he wasn't good enough to stand against that monster.

What had this all been for? Why even spare them, if this creature could have done this at any time? Killed them as easily as poor Caster?

Or...could she have? Had something changed? Something to do with Pandora?

He stopped running, turned on his heel as the fox turned her rage towards Gate. He hurled himself towards Pandora's body, trying to see her data, to see the data around him, to understand the fox and her dead Partner and this strange battleground and this shadow world they'd stumbled into, this world of vertigo nightmares.

"We don't need to--"

hurl ourselves at her, the virus had intended to say, but suddenly Gate was the target of her fury and they both had to move. Gate shot off in one direction, Alitheia in the other, its steps carrying it significantly further than they had any right to. They could dodge the blurring foxfire, but something struck it as...

Nova.

It smashed to a stop and wheeled, and saw him standing straight in the path of the attacks. Trying to use his own body to block it from striking them?

The spangled energy from the foxfire spirits was almost upon him. It didn't have any time to think.

It blinked and appeared in front of Nova, a towering wall of darkness that folded backward under the force of the blow, for a moment forming a wide sphere around Nova until the energy had mostly worn out, leaving lingering flits of Origin energy clinging to its body.

It collapsed back into human form alongside him, disheveled and irate, streaming ribbons of darkness where it was trying to heal itself.

"What," it said, "the hell," it grabbed him, "is wrong with you!"

It teleported them both a short distance away as the fox surged forward again, her jaws snapping at the now-empty space they had previously inhabited. She snapped her head around, trying to locate them again, but Gate's proclamation caught her attention instead.

"We followed our Master's orders!" she screamed. "And you fight alongside them! Where has your tamer gone? What is your madness!"

She opened her mouth and exhaled a gout of darkness, boiling fast across the field toward him.

Suriumon clenched his teeth.

"We can't just expect them to do it," he said. "We need to-- there has to be something we can do. We can't fight her, but..." He snorted, hissing an expletive. "We can't just stand here. We need that book away from her."

But what could they do? It was remarkable and frustrating that somehow the Digimon were the ones so incapable of fighting-- that they had to rely on the humans, or the once-humans, or whatever they were, to do the heavy lifting. But they couldn't be powerless. They couldn't be. That how this worked.

But what could they...?

Simon looked.

There was Karyxmon, all Digimon data augmented by a whorl of almost incomprehensible power being siphoned from the Book, for the moment channeling Darkness through herself and her breath to try and strike at Gate. She was monstrous, but between herself and the power leeching from the Book, there were no surprises.

There was the battlefield, little more than a textured box floating in an infinite nothingness. The way they had come from was gone. The way forward was nonexistent. Everything seemed to have compressed to this one point; where they stood now seemed to be all that remained of reality, as far as he could see.

As for the smear on the ground, there was hardly an indication of what it had been. Its former identity was written in ragged bits, shredded and consumed, almost impossible to piece together-- but, with enough concentration, those little bits came together to form a fragment of Pandora. The vast majority of what remained was exactly what it appeared to be: corrupted data, construed to resemble a virus, identical in fundamental construct to Alitheia.

Simon understood then.

He whirled on his heels and stared at the towering form of the virus. This infection that had sprung apparently from nowhere and taken Chaos whole. But not just Chaos. No, how could it be? He had underestimated the persistence of this virus, its power, its reach.

And yet...

If there were all fake. If there were all data. Why would Pandora fail where Chaos had...not succeeded, Simon guessed, but become? What was the difference?

He needed to know, and only the virus could help him.

He sprinted towards her as fast as his legs could carry him, his grief momentarily forgotten in the chaos and confusion of a battle for lofty stakes.

"DEAD!" Gate cried. "DEAD AS EVERY ONE OF THEM. DEAD AS FRUIT OF A MAD MASTER'S ORDERS!" He threw his dust into the darkness, miniature portals linking to time and space all across Mirage. He kept his silver-bladed knife handy, just in case.

"ALL OF US LEARNED BETTER!" he shouted. "Seraph and Edge and CK and Zaqueia and...!" He hammered her with the faces he could remember, the memories he'd been given, the memories he'd taken from Caster, the things he'd glimpsed in his little portals as he'd watched Mirage. "WE ALL LEARNED WHAT HE WAS. WE ALL TRIED TO FIND OUR OWN WAY. YOU AND PANDORA AND ODIN..." he thought of each face in turn, then returned to Levia's again, broadcasting it with all his strength. "AND YOU KILLED HER!"

Nova looked away as Alitheia grabbed him, but didn't struggle against her as she ported both of them away. The burning red irises in his eyes had dimmed to an amber as he finally spoke, "...I'm... I'm whats wrong." He said.

"If what Simon said is true, we are simply constructs like the Anti's, except we were more based on the originals. We have been parading around as if we are the originals, but what if we are just as bad, or even worse than the Anti's? Puppets like they are. To be used in this sick little game."

He sighed, then continued, "I... Nova may not have said this. But he was proud to be human. A digidestined. There are plenty of opportunities for him to sacrifice his humanity for power, but he never did. He took pride in that, being just as strong as the others without losing what made him human. He wanted to go home, start a family with a female who I can't even remember."

"But in my case... I was never human. But I have the feeling that my humanity was ripped away from me. The only person who I could think who could relate to that is dead... or eaten by you, or using you as cover so she won't have to be worry about being a human anymore. I'm confused,if we live through this what is the Master going to make us do next? Or he he doesn't like the results and basically run the experiment all over again?"

"I feel powerless. We are here fighting a Fox who has lost the one she was bonding too. Simon suffered the same fate, Chaos lost Aurora.I haven't lost my partners, but worse. I have lost my sense of self. I'm fucked up Alitheia. And even if we win I will continued to be..."

---

"Well regardless, we have to try something." Said Enix to Surimon, "But if I could distract her, do you think you, with help from Frost, could get the book away from her? I am stuck in my Champion form, you two are stuck in Rookie after all."

"She is going to used you as a chew toy, and then do the same to us!" Declared Frost.

"Well if you succeed she won't be able to do that too you, or at least not as hard."

"Thats a big gamble to be taking!"

Alitheia stared at him. A number of possibilities ran through its head, but it dismissed most of them.

"Realness is relative," it said. "Perhaps we are not real. Perhaps none of this is real, in a direct way. None of us are as we should be. But consider this-- if this is all a fabrication, and we are here when so many others are not, then there was a reason we were the ones fabricated. You would fight recklessly because you are not real and there is no value to your life? Then fight instead for what it all must mean. There is something greater than this moment, with ramifications that go beyond the false world. Perhaps to the real you and the real us, to your real partners-- to where we all came from, outside of this place."

It paused, and looked over his shoulder, to the fox and her target, toward Grey approaching them.

"Philosophy will have to wait," it said. "The last of us is approaching."

- -

"I don't know," he said. "Given the circumstances it might be better..."

He trailed off for a moment, watching as Gate continued to face off against the fox.

"I think we can all concentrate on retrieving the Book," he said. "Looks like our 'friend' has distraction covered."

- -

He tried to batter with projections, with emotions, with errant feelings, but if he was trying to stir guilt there was nothing there. She snapped her jaws and leapt, blurring across the field toward him.

"Learned what!" she howled. "Where did you even come from!"

She recognized the data, she understood he was one of the clones, but why had the Master made him, and whatever other clone he must have been tied to? Why had he not been part of the group at the beginning?

Or was he something more like her-- created after the fact because there had not been information to work with before? Because his Chosen had not been a Chosen, because the stolen keepsake had been nearly worthless, because a bond had to be fabricated, because her existence, even more than the others, was a lie?

It didn't matter. She had her orders. She had her promises.

He was going to stop her from killing the rest, so he had to die.

She lunged, moving too fast for the eye to follow, a cyclone of foxfire and teeth and claws that was upon him in less than a heartbeat, ripping through his magics so she could rip through his skin.

Nova grunted out of frustration and breathed in.

Alitheia was right, even if they were not real. The ramifications of what is happening here could effect many people, even their originals. But even so, he didn't have time to leave his thoughts in disarray. He had to focus on the fox, more importantly, getting the book away from the Fox. He can focus on his identify crisis later.

Nova breathed out, looked at Simon and spoke, "Yo, where is she keeping the book? If we can find it... I can more than likely get it away from her. I can not only speed myself up massively. But I can do the same to my reflexes. But at the speed Karyxmon is moving... I probably can only manage to match my speed and reflexes with hers once before burning myself out. So if we are going to stand a chance. We need to do this quick."

He then looked over to Gate, "Preferably before she tears him apart."

---

Enix then began to move.

The fox currently had all her rage pointed at Gate, so Enix maneuvered around behind her, completely out of her vision range. He wasn't moving fast at all, and was maintaining a safe distance just in case something went wrong. He didn't want to go all out until he got view of the book or someone else tried something. Going at her one by one was suicide. The Fox was much to powerful for that. So if they were going to do something, they had to do it together.

Frost, against his better judgement, followed Enix. He wanted nowhere near this Fox without the ability to Digivolve. But they were locked off from the outside world and they were trapped in here with a very angry Fox, so while this may have been a crazy idea. It was better than waiting around and waiting for Karyxmon to kill them all.

So they set up position.

And waited.

Simon arrived for the tail-end of Nova's speech. He paused and gave the man a surprised look. There was depth there, surprising depth. He idly wondered if he should have spoken with him, if perhaps he could have...

Well. They had all paid their costs, hadn't they?

"It was you," Simon said, staring at the virus. "You're the reason she's dead."

But that was flat and accomplished nothing. This was a fight for life-or-death.

"There's no way out of here," Simon said. "What are we supposed to do?"

The fox ripped through his skin.

She was fast and terrible and strong and swift, fueled by the enormous powers that drove all the Alters and fueled to still greater heights by the incredible strength of that book. She was burning and Gate had no idea what powers he might have remaining to him. But she was not their ultimate foe: their ultimate foe, the thing that had caused all this, was elsewhere, and Gate had to reach him, he had to, he had to, for if he not what good was he?

He was no match for her, not like this, perhaps not even if she were deprived of her stolen book. But he was strong--perhaps stronger than she had reckoned. There were resources he could draw upon that his siblings could not have have.

The fox tore into him, a deep and vicious wound, and Gate moved with his own terrible speed and countered her, sinking his dagger into her jaw just enough so that his left arm remained free. He grappled with her as she burned at him, threatening to tear him asunder. Stuffing tumbled out of him--mannequin fluff, like what you might find in a child's toy.

He laughed, in spite of the pain. His dagger was in the fox's skull: his thoughts were more intense than ever before, knife-like themselves as they stabbed their way deeper into her mind.

Who knows? he thought with that terrible sharp clarity. From wherever our Master draws us, until we learn better than to serve. Unlike you, and Levia, and Pandora, and Odin. You try to make yourselves perfect, and look at what you become.

The key was suddenly in his left hand, and he jabbed it towards the Fox's head, willing steel bands into existence, a magician's trick he would draw from the raw stuff of his own data, from the blood and stuffing and magic she had drawn into being by sinking her teeth into his skin, where even her terrible light might not rightly stop him. He tried to weave her a Gleipnir, laughing in agonized ecstasy at the irony,

Stay awhile, sister. Let's take a page from the Seraph's book, and number our many sins..

"Good man," Alitheia said quietly. "She has it..."

But Simon was there, speaking to it, and the virus looked at him for a moment in silence, its expression flat.

"I said that when we walked into the room," it said. Although it wasn't surprised that Simon hadn't paid it any mind; he had been with Nova in their reckless charge. It looked past both of them and shifted slightly to the side, trying to get a better angle on the fox.

"We get Suriumon's book from her," it said. "Our odds are still astronomical, but while she has it they're effectively nil, and any chance is better than none."

Although if it could--

"The Digimon are moving," it said. "If the wizard can keep her distracted, between the six of us, I think we can manage something."

It wasn't sure what, exactly.

Suriumon wasn't, either, but he moved with the others, liquid strides close to the ground. The fox was plainly preoccupied, but he couldn't see any benefit to not exercising caution.

His eyes flicked across her form, through the twining mass of her tails, searching for the burning energy from his book. If they could locate it, then between them all...

He wasn't exactly sure, but he was trying to take stock of their resources. The Digimon had their elemental affinities; Enix had some physical advantages as a Champion; Suri himself could bend space, and even with the limitations of his Rookie form this strange reality might allow him a little more leeway. Or not. But it was something to consider.

From the corner of his eye he saw the others. Nova with his inhuman speed; Grey with his sight; the virus with powers he knew better than he cared to admit but could not quite recall. Between them all...

They could do this. He was sure of it.

As long as their opponent remained occupied. If she gave a dedicated effort to the rest of them, they'd be wiped out in an instant.

Fortunately, Karyxmon was otherwise occupied by taking a knife to the skull, although it was an occupation that didn't last. The blade sank in and an instant later the flesh fused back together around it. She whipped back, striking at her head with one paw and ripping it back out of skin. The new wound hardly had time to raise blood before it closed up again in a spurt of pale flame.

"Perfection?" she growled, and winked out of the space in front of him. When she reappeared it as directly behind him, her paw already slamming down on his back and pinning him to the ground.

Kill him, said a voice like the Master's, vast and deep and woven from the voices of more than one throat. End this.

Her tails flared, and the ends started to burn brighter. The energy from the Book, held still by one thickly twisted tail, poured out around her, illuminating her in silver and blue.

"Odin fought for perfection," she said. "Against the Master's wish. All of them fought against the Master's wishes. They were born selfish. They were born broken. All of us were. Pandora--"

She dug her claws deep, into his back or into the ground, gritted her teeth so tight they bit into her own gums.

"Most broken of all," she said. "She didn't want power, though. She didn't want perfection. She was incomplete. All she wanted was to be complete, to be something real. You ask why we culled them? Because they were broken and the Master needed them fixed. Not before they had tried, though-- defeating the originals always came first. But if they could be culled and brought back, their imperfections could be cleansed. They could be fixed." She snorted. "We could never-- by nature, not one of us could be perfect. But we could at least be made complete. Become what these originals were supposed to be. Become what this world needs."

Nova kept his eyes on Karyxmon, she had Gate pinned down. But even more importantly, she was no longer moving around like a bolt of lightning.

As Alitheia moved, so did Nova. Walking around the virus and giving her ample space as he stood to her left, his eyes still fixed on the fox. He then spoke, his voice leveled and calm, "Grey, we know Karyx has the book on her person somewhere. Can you use your vision to see exactly where it is? This is a perfect chance given that she isn't darting across the field right now."

He continued, "We also should make it quick, we might not trust Gate. But I don't feel right letting him die like a dog holding off the Fox."

---

Karyxmon had stopped and spread her tails. She appeared to be having an arguement with Gate.

But more importantly, Enix could feel her energy sky rocketing. She must of been drawing power from Surimon's book.

He wasn't sure this was going to work, but he figured he would try anyway. The Crystal in his forehead glowed and his golden eyes brightened. He focused on trying to find foreign energy on the fox, it was true that the Karyxmon's energy was very similar to Surimon's but he hope the book's power would have a separate energy signature itself. If that was the case he could signal out exactly where the book was and relay the information to the others. That way they could focus just on getting the item away from her, instead of searching and retrieving.

Frost meanwhile, held his position. The others had not made their move yet, so the best he could currently do was bind his time with Surimon and Enix.

But still, he had a bad feeling about the Fox attacking Gate. She was much to powerful for one Digimon, created by The Master or not, to take on as long as she had that book.

Simon stared between them, his eyes on Nova in particular. "IF you think you can be that fast," Simon said. "Get the book." He turned back towards the fox, grief put aside, his mind narrowed to a peculiar razor clarity. He saw only the fox in front of him, only the task at hand. The rest could wait.

A flash of data. An ache as the swirling nexus of that strange book caught his eye. Christ, what the hell was that thing?

"Tail on the far side has it," Simon said. "Virus, we've got to give him an opening."

The bindings exploded out of Gate's skin and closed on empty air. The fox appeared and reappeared behind him. He turned, too late: she slammed into him and pinned him to the ground. He held himself very still, alert to any change in her posture, any change in her magic and fire, anything that might tell him what was going to...

She started to speak.

Gate remained very still.

Wish, he repeated.

He started to laugh. And in the midst of that laughter, words spilled out, faster than an ordinary tongue could possibly have moved.

You make it sound so innocuous. Be honest, now, sister. His command. The command that killed them all. The command that killed Pandora. The command that will kill us, too. The broken orders of a broken master.

Cleansed? Fixed? Listen to yourself. Those are the words the powerful use to justify their sins. Even if he were right, why punish us for his mistakes? You do not blame the clay for being misshapen by clumsy hands.

The laughter faded. Now there were only the words.

But these are lies, sister. Lies to bring us to heel. We were always complete, just as they were always complete. We never needed to be fixed.

Even Nomis had never understood that. He had tried to explain it to her, but she remained focused on her impossible goal. To be unfettered as no soul in existence ever had been.

All of them, such mad goals, such impossible dreams. All had paid the cost in their own way, hadn't they? Punished by their sins, as the Seraph might have said.

But the Seraph had been wrong. They had all been wrong. Gate had always been sure of that, deep in his heart.

The only thing we ever needed to be complete was to be alive, Gate thought. And look what remains of us?

His single eye was fixed on Pandora's wretched remains. His head was full of Nomis, crumbling to dust.

This is what happens to the things your Master tries to fix.

Karyxmon stared at him.

"You need to be fixed, too," she said. There was no malice behind it, no fervor-- just quiet shock, a hint of pity. "Same as all of us. You don't remember-- no. You never even knew the contract to our existence."

She kept him held under her paw, but eased off of him slightly.

"We were put forward with one directive, mage," she said. "To kill the original tamers. We were made to obsolete the summoning process. We were made to be the saviors this world needs."

- -

Behind, Enix wasn't having much luck identifying the location of the Book. Karyxmon's data was different enough from Suriumon's -- and the Book had little to do with his own data patterns anyway -- but she was so cloaked in its power the energies were scrambled together.

Fortunately, Simon's sight let him peer through just enough to see the core of it, and what he relayed to Nova was correct.

- -

"But we had to prove our superiority," she continued. "We had to fight them and kill them. If we can't do that, we're failures, and the Master has to remake us into something that can succeed. I culled them because Pandora told me to, because the Master told her to. It wasn't until I was... alone... before I understood why. Don't try to poison me, mage. I brought their data back here so those flaws could be cleansed and they could come back."

- -

Alitheia nodded to Grey. "What do you propose?"

- -

"You are wrong," Karyxmon said. "Our existence was always hinged on our contract. We kill the originals, we prove our worth, and only then would the Master untether us and allow us to live. Until then we were all subject to him. Until then all it takes is a thought and he can undo us.

"But every one-- every one of them drove away from this directive for selfish reasons. For personal gain, for power, for perfection. They fought and killed each other instead of fighting our actual enemies. They destroyed each other and there was nobody there to collect their scattered data. The ones who were lost early can never be brought back. But the others... we've gathered their data, we've protected it, and when the tamers are dead we will have triumphed, they will be brought back, and we'll have earned our lives, beyond all doubt."

The alternative, after all, was to disobey, and to die-- worse than die. For at least in death the ones she had gone back to gather could be restored. But the others were failures beyond reckoning, pinched out of existence, gone as though they had never been. She knew they had existed, she remembered that as fact, but could not remember names or faces; they had been eradicated from reality, nothing but a hazy fantasy.

- -

Suriumon was getting an idea. He looked over to the other Digimon and nodded to them, then indicated the others and turned, slinking back toward the rest of the group and hoping the others would follow. They needed a moment to regroup and consider, and they -- all of them -- could work together for this.

And once he had the book...

- -

Karyxmon leaned more heavily on Gate, leaning in close to his face.

"You're being given a final chance," she said.

You're being given a final chance, the Master said, the woven voices twisting behind Karyxmon's.

"You never knew what was at stake."

What strange monsters we were given.

"And now that you do, help me kill them. Let us fulfill our contract and live."

Or else you will never have been.

Your girl will never have been.

I warned you against making that one. She wasn't part of the original arrangement.

She was made wrong.

So many were made wrong.

This whole venture is an absurdity. We should have aborted when it became clear they were cheating.

Too late now.

You're the last wild card, one of the Master's voices said. Do as you were made to do. She will not kill you. We will.

Enix made a low grunt when he couldn't sense directly where the book was on the Fox. Karyxmon was too heavily cloaked in its power, she wasn't simply just using the book. All of her power was running through the book, getting magnified, and then expelled outward with its refined power.

It was terrifying for something to have that amount of sheer power, augmented by a book or not. It was unreal in scope.

Enix however, then felt Frost tugging at his arm.

The Dragon looked down to see Frost motioning towards Surimon, who had taken the lead and was heading back over to the Simon, Alitheia, and Nova. He quickly figured out that they were going to regroup and then attack as a unit. Which was actually the smartest thing they could do at the moment. Given their lack of the ability to Digivolve.

Frost then quickly follow after Surimon, and Enix made his way behind them as well.

---

"Got it." Said Nova quickly, focusing on the tail, "Tail on the far side."

He did not allow his eyes to leave the tail in question and spoke, "Well, I am ready to make my move when you guys are." He then transmuted the great sword in his hand into a more refined and easier to use weapon, a Katana.

"So how exactly are we going to do this? It would be a damn shame if we got so close to the book only for us to bump into each other and screw ourselves over." The tamer then began to pace around, slowly limbering himself up. He wasn't sure if he was going to do a teleport jump first then run away, or run forward and then teleport jump away before Karyx could attack him.

"At the very least, this should be pretty exciting." He said with a nervous laugh.

Simon considered the virus and Nova. They had the vague outlines of a plan. Something they could do. "Keep your hands free, if you can," Simon said to Nova. "We're only going to have one shot at this.

He looked to the virus and said, "Do what we do best. 'll be a bullet. You be a virus."

He watched the fox lean in. He curled and uncurled his fists, making sure his fingers were ready and flexible. He had to be sharp now. Sharper than he had ever been. As sharp and strong as Nomis and Caster.

The fox leaned close to Gate, blazing with that terrible fire. Simon exhaled. "Looks like we're out of time. Let's go."

And the fox leaned close, and whispered truths, and Gate almost laughed again.

Contract, ha! Another demand from their lofty Master! The same pretensions as the rest of them! God, he wondered if that was all their vices and obsessions were: the Master's sins reflected and refracted in his children. What matter that there was a purpose? What matter that he could undo them with a thought? More signs of an inadequate creator clinging to power however he could. He created free wills and minds and then destroyed and remolded them when they failed to measure up to his demands.

He started to speak again, and then he heard the voices.

Voices in his head, voices almost like his, voices nothing like his, voices that were too many and too numerous and he felt like he was drowning in them. His single eye went vague.

Not Master, he thought. Masters.

Never existed. Never have existed. A false existence all the way. Had Nomis been right after all? Had there been such terrible chains in place, chains neither of them seen? Had all their suppositions and hopes and dreams come to naught?

His single eye wavered violently. The stuff of his being spilled out to one side. He teetered above a vast black gulf and his mind reeled with it and with questions and doubts and all his scattered memories could not help him now.

Before he could answer her, Simon moved.

He did not trust Download, not with the peculiar stuff Karyx was doing to the world around them. But his fractured half-memories were stirring now, the ghosts of things he didn't know. The clothes he was wearing--the clothes he had been wearing since Nomis had forced him to transform, the clothes he didn't recognize but knew intimately, intuitively, a weapon better suited for him than the strange guns he'd started this journey with. He had not even noticed his change of clothes: it had happened and he had simply accepted it, as he had accepted so many of the strange things that had happened on this mad quest.

But he had it now. A weapon he'd never known, and a weapon he knew better than any gun he'd ever helpd.

He slammed into Karyx from behind, his Gleipnir exploding off of him in barbed-wire tethers, aiming to hold down those twisting tails, aiming to keep her off-guard, aiming to give the virus chance to use her own peculiar nature against this potent thing, aiming to buy Nova just enough time to finish the god damn job.

[ More or less. I'll resolve the whole thing after you post. ]

"Virus," Suriumon said.

"Wolf," it responded quietly.

"I can--"

Simon suddenly moved.

"Do it," it snapped, and raised its hand.

Simon tore forward, hurling himself at the fox, and it was incredibly stupid but maybe it would be enough. Suriumon, on his end, poured everything he had into the space between where they were and where Nova needed to be. He couldn't rip through dimensions -- there was nothing there to rip -- but he redirected his efforts to just ripping through the one. A to B, and suddenly it seemed Nova was a lot closer to where he needed to be without being there.

He could only hold that open for a few seconds, though; then space would be back where it was supposed to be and Nova would have to find his own way away. But it seemed likely that he could do it.

Alitheia nodded curtly to him. Whatever it was planning, it needed Nova in and possibly out before it fully moved.

Nova felt something change.

The area in front of him was rippling, and the fox seemed a lot closer than she was before. He looked over and saw Surimon focusing, along with Enix and Frost not to far behind him, Surimon must of been the source of the dimension rip or whatever it was.

But Nova knew this was his door, and he would not waste it.

He focused, drawing power from the Indigo Tear to it's utmost limit, his entire body sparkled with electricity. He felt everything slow down to almost a crawl, everything thing felt so slow and surreal... he felt in control.

He dashed forward through the tear, moving at a speed that eyes could not keep up with, and was almost immediately were he needed to be. But he had to push it more.

He had to go faster.

And with a burst of speed he was immediately behind the fox, he looked for the tail, the tail on the far side, and immediately slashed. He knew he could not hurt the fox, her power with the book was too great, but he was hoping to play on her instincts to protect herself over protecting the book. Perhaps loosening her grip on it just a little. Anything at this point could help his cause.

Regardless as to if that gambit would succeed or not. He immediately dispelled his weapon and leap out with both hand to grab the book from the fox's tail. As soon as he placed his hand on the book he grabbed it as hard as he could, and pulled. His head was already pointed back towards the rip. It was still there.

He put all his strength into pulling the book away from the fox and dashing back through the tear. He was fast, he knew he could make it. That is if Karyxmon did not struggle. But he knew better than to think that she would let this book go so easily without a fight.

Never less, this was their chance, and he could not let them down. Even if he got hurt in the process, getting this book away from Karyxmon at least gave the others a fighting chance, which was more than they had at the moment.

Nova moved with such speed Suriumon could not follow his movement; he just had to keep the portal open as long as he could, just in case. But it wasn't very long.

This wasn't how he was supposed to use his power, and he could feel something behind his eyes pulsing hard. His vision was dark at the edges, and somewhat red, and he closed his eyes and poured everything he had into keeping that portal open for just a second more, just a second-- more--

- -

Ahead of him, Simon struck the fox.

And it wasn't enough. It never would have been.

She twisted where she was, her teeth snapping madly at the human suddenly on her back, her hold on Gate released as her fury directed to him. Blazing energy erupted around her and pummeled at him in blazing flits of foxfire, her tails lashing madly against insufficient chains. Gate had already tried to chain her and it had failed; it would be a simple thing to do the same here, even if they could find a hold.

And they would not, for her movements were too erratic and too powerful, and in addition to flares of foxfire Simon was also under assault from an explosion of flame raking over her back, burning his flesh, boiling him from the inside.

Leave the Master to deal with the mage. She had to focus on the humans-- for her sake, for the others. For all the ones they'd had to kill to earn their right to live.

For Pandora.

Simon's attack wouldn't hold her, but it was more than enough to distract her.

Nova passed through the pinch in space and slashed at her, although it proved to be a waste of time, the blade biting into thick fur and failing to make much more of an impact than that. He reached out as it neared him, caught the edges of the Book, and tried to pull it free.

Another of her tails, blazing pale blue, whipped around and struck at him, ephemeral flames dancing across skin where it struck, burning beyond flame. But beneath pain he had the Book in his hands -- her tails weren't exactly prehensile and didn't have the necessary 'grip' to keep it away from him -- and he was turning, and the portal back was winking out because that pain behind Suriumono's eyes had burst, and he crashed to the ground, crimson leaking from his eyes, space exploded outward and reasserting itself.

Alitheia swiped its hand, and the viral mess that had been Pandora erupted from nearby and stabbed into Karyxmon's neck.

It didn't pierce flesh -- it didn't even have the strength to pierce fur -- but the impact snapped her head to the side and sent her flame wide, away from Grey. She snapped her teeth together to stem the flame and suddenly winked out again, reappearing on the other side of where she had held Gate, turned to face the others, the viral remains of her not-tamer dripping from her neck, trying to burrow deeper.

It wouldn't. It couldn't. Even without her still sheathed in power stolen from the Book, there just wasn't enough power behind it, enough virulence.

She looked at them, and threw her head back, howling.

No more of this. She didn't need the Book to finish them. She poured everything she had into the streaming petals, everything she had into her blazing tail-tips, everything she had through herself. Reality shimmered around her, the world flickered, the edges seemed to tear.

Ahead of Nova, Suriumon lay splayed on the ground, his own edges blurring and flickering, one eye barely open. Near him, Alitheia held out its hand.

"Back here," it said. "Give me the Book."

Nova moved through the tear and crashed into the ground just in the nick of time as the tear flickered out completely. Nova just laid there for a long moment, he felt pain burning at his chest from Karyxmon's foxfire. It stung, it hurt like hell, but it was worth it.

Because he could still feel the book in his hands, he had succeeded. He had outfoxed the fox.

He started to laugh out at his triumph, but the moment he tried he felt pain throughout his entire body.

His legs hurt like hell, it literally felt like he had just ran a marathon, his arms were heavy, his lungs burned almost as bad as the actual burn from foxfire on his chest, his vision was blurred, his head hurt and was spinning, and he felt as if he was overheating. He closed his eyes, hoping that would help him mitigate some of the pain he was currently feeling and allow him to regain his bearings. Had to stop this damned spinning.

He then heard something, he knew it was not meant to be loud, but the voice came booming into his ears, "Back here, give me the Book." It hurt his head to hear words.

The tamer groaned in pain at the words, "That..." he couldn't even finish a sentence at the moment. He grabbed the book with one hand, it now felt a lot heavier than it did a few moments ago, and he tossed it towards the voice.

It barely went anywhere. Nova had no strength left.

But thankfully, there were other around.

Frost quickly ran up and grabbed the book, before making his way over to Alitheia and Surimon. He held the book up to the Virus and spoke, "Weird, I don't feel any power from the book." The SnowVeemon then shrugged his shoulder, "Still better for Surimon to have it than the fox."

Enix however, swooped in and grabbed Nova up from off of the ground. But his eyes were currently on Karyxmon. It was true that her power dropped somewhat when Nova got the book away from her, but she was still pretty damn strong.

But now, she was summoning a massive amount of power, enough power to make even Enix a fair bit concern. He then looked back to Alitheia and Surimon, "Guys, it looks like the Fox is pissed, and she plans on blowing us up in the most painful way possible."

Nova then groaned, "Speak... lower."

Simon was unaware of what else happened around the battlefield. He was aware of only one thing.

He burned.

This strange suit of metal, this second skin that followed his mental commands so easily, it might well have protected him. But he had committed too much of it to the attack, entangling with the fox, drawing her ire. He had made himself a pivotal distraction. He could not have hoped to beat her, but he could well hope to distract her.

But he was not prepared for the fire.

He dodged, as best as he was able, as best as his senses would allow. He twisted so one streak of it merely blazed a path of agony down the back of his thigh. He jerked backwards and felt the tip of his nostril singed by a searing ember. He pivoted and

And a wave of fire tossed him into the air, cut straight through him and out the other side. He could feel the sudden emptiness in his stomach, feel his skin seared and blackened and raw.

Simon had been shot and beaten and tortured, and this was the worst pain he had ever felt. His skin crackling, his hear and chest and body boiling. He screamed. He did not know if he would ever be able to stop.

He tumbled through the air, the rush of wind hurting his fresh burns, and then all at once landed on something soft. He was still screaming, the soft thing rubbing against a large burn along his back, and Gate ran a troubled hand across his brow, his mind probing for any hint of the Master's many-throated voice. The data and stuffing of his being was still spilling out through the wound at his side, and he wasn't sure if that was what made it hard to think or if it was simply that he was suddenly aware of the Master as he'd been only intellectually before.

But Simon Grey was dying, and Gate still needed him.

He lifted a heavy eye towards Karyx, glowing with that terrible power. Poison, she'd called it, but Gate thought she knew better. Gate thought she knew exactly what his words were.

"Fetters I cannot see," he murmured, barely aware of his own thoughts. "But only the body can be chained."

He fished the little golden circle from the belt around his waist, and tossed it into the air. It shimmered, shuddred, rippled and expanded, until it was nearly as big around as Gate himself.

He stared up at the hoop, listened for the Master. Then he nodded, and snapped his fingers. The little hoop fluxed, fluctuated, turned from gold to red, and pulled at the fox.

She was damn near immortal, but Gate had need of those around him, and perhaps her immortality could be turned to their advantage. Perhaps he could yet treat the worst of his and Simon's wounds.

Vampire Drain at Karyxmon
Sucks 5% of target's HP and gives to target (or targets) of Gate's choice.
Math: 500,000/10 (Karyx shrugs off 90%) = 50,000 /20 = 2500

The Book came into its hand, and the virus took it and stepped back, examining the object for a moment. Its cover was strewn with speckled light shifting and changing as it moved through space, a curious optical effect as the rest of the cover and the digital runes written on it remained utterly still in the light.

It looked over to Suriumon. He tilted his head up to it, waiting for it to respond.

It did so by pressing its hand against the Book and reaching into its data.

"What're you doing?" Suriumon breathed.

"What I need to," it said.

- -

Gate's magic fizzled well before it reached her, and it wasn't the fox's power that did so. Something else reached down, right into his data, and pinched right at it. His ability to maneuver such power was snipped right at the source.

And you choose defiance, the four voices chorused.

Of them, one of them sighed heavily, and murmured, Typical.

- -

The wolf twisted, tried to get his legs beneath him, collapsed against the ground. He lay there for a moment, dizzy, and then tried again.

"Give it here," he growled. "It's mine. With that, I can..."

But the virus ignored him, and pressed itself into the book, little threads of darkness starting to seep through the pages. It closed its eyes for a moment, its hand briefly resplendent with the energy from the Book. It remembered, and she opened her eyes.

She smiled, and looked down to Suriumon.

"Suri," she said.

He twisted and raised his upper body, squinting at her. "Kid."

"Hey."

"What...?"

She tossed the Book between her hands for a second, and met his gaze again.

"We're fucked, wolf," she said. "Whole thing was rigged from the start."

"The hell are you talking about?"

Her smile was small, and just a little sad.

"I'm gonna try something," she said. "But only with your blessing." She held out the Book for him to see better. "I need this. You won't be getting it back. Do you trust me?"

He looked at her for a long moment, the creature he knew, the chimera that had been the virus that had been the girl. Something from another life. Something that had no business standing here, but here it was. She was.

- -

Gate's senses blacked out all at once.

Blindness came, then deafness. His mouth went dry and leathery, and then ceased to taste of anything. He could feel, though-- that lingered for a long time, the pain of his wounds, the wrongness of the world and the wrongness of himself, the sticky blistered flesh of the boy he was trying to save and would inevitably fail. Just as he'd failed all the others; just as he would fail Nomis.

We made you with one directive, the voice said. Kill the originals, and you earn the right to live.

So many others wanted to ignore us. Wanted to fight amongst themselves, toward illogical goals.

Souls, another voice spat. We shouldn't have allowed them souls.

And then, another voice in the medley, somehow different from the Master's many voices, spoke up.

Your whole gambit would have failed, it said. It was female-- low and full, not feminine, but against the male-tinged voices of the Master it was almost shocking. The soul is essential. Without the soul, there can be no bonds. Your proposal would have given you puppets-- fun for a show, maybe, but ultimately useless.

At least they wouldn't have gotten it in their heads they could murder us.

Children do have a tendency to rebel.

Useless, snapped one of the Master's voices. Gate, we want you to understand your stupidity and your failure. The boy dies for his recklessness and you are powerless to stop it. The others will die in a moment and you were all powerless to stop it. If you'd merely understood--

You breached the agreement to make them, said another voice, softer and feminine. They never got your instructions. Not that it would have mattered.

It may have. Another voice, masculine again, but even then somehow apart from the Master. The girl desired freedom. You would have promised that -- absolute freedom -- in exchange for her services. But such strong wills would understand that servitude already binds them. Your freedom was always illusory. They were smart enough to understand that.

To which the second female added, You always did underestimate them.

No, said part of the Master. Not all of us.

- -

She was.

"What are you going to do?" he asked.

Chaos smiled.

"What I'm here for," she said. "Breaking things."

- -

Simon lay on the ground, smoldering, dying.

Gate lay on the ground, prostrate, senseless, dialogue playing out in his head over the course of a split second. The Master would snuff him out easily as he'd destroyed Gate's ties to his magic and ties to his own body.

Nova stood, but only with the help of his Digimon. He was battered, burnt, exhausted.

The Digimon stood by, powerless against the fox's growing fury, watching the floor beneath her peel away, listening to reality scream and crumble.

Suriumon laid his head down and waited.

Chaos tucked the Book inside her coat, where it fused into herself.

"Boys!" she said, raising her voice to a shout so they could hear her. "You're the heroes here. Take care of the rest for me."

She erupted.

Needles of sharp viral matter speared into each of them in turn, trailing corrupted data and shimmering light, the remains of the Book's knowledge bound up in the guise of the virus. The needle cloud was inescapable, an incredible explosion of power and energy, carrying with it a terrible burning, a heat under the skin, and--

Nova as he should have been, a proud dragon-man, wyrmforged, Aileron speaking to

Simon as he sacrificed his human form for his friends, embraced his destiny, understood the power that

Ookamimon stood up.

He remembered.

He remembered a lifetime of frustrating responsibility, an agreement had made to higher authority, an innocuous promise that he had failed to fulfill. He remembered losing her, finding her, traveling together, waiting. He never left her know why, he didn't think it would ever be more than necessity, but he felt fear and concern, he felt protective, he felt proud. Another life, a real one, rushing into the scattered memory of his artificial form.

He didn't see them, but he felt it in the strange, burning connection that had dug between all of them-- awakening memories, buried truth, who they were outside of this fabricated box. Who they had been. Who they were meant to be.

In front of them, Karyxmon was screaming as the virus tore into her sides and her power bled thick and dark. She staggered, howling, trying to white the virus off of her but it simply latched on and dug deeper.

And the Master snuffed Gate's life.

Except it didn't work.

What?

Silly, the lower female voice purred. You never did understand viruses, did you? You can't touch any of them from here.

The separate male voice added: Not while they're infected.

Now, said the second female, you'll just have to watch like the rest of us.

[I was going to ask of it would be okay for Nova to have a Destruction Boost for this battle. But then I saw Karyxmon's HP, and i'm pretty sure this is a boss battle... his Destruction grows at an increased rate anyway... So no need.]

Everything happened at once.

Enix and Frost did not know how. But the Virus, Alitheia, had somehow brought back Chaos via Surimon's book. Nova could not completely comprehend what was going on but he heard bits and pieces of the conversation.

But there was one thing that was said that resonated with him, resonated with all of them.

"Boys! You're the heroes here. Take care of the rest for me."

There was an explosion near them, and the fallout of said explosion washed throughout the entire field. It burned as it made contact with Nova, Frost, and Enix all cried out at the pain.

There was suddenly darkness.

There was no sound, but Nova felt words of encouragement from deep within. There was no feeling, but Nova felt a burning sensation. It was invasive, but it also felt familiar, giving him a bow of confidence even through its pain.

A world of experience ran through him, but it wasn't new. It was if pieces of the puzzle was restoring itself.

He once more felt complete.

There was light.

Nova's body Digitized.

As he reformed, he found himself in his true form, Tatsuomon, he stood there, basking in his power. A power that was always his, a power he should of had all along. Not cloaked in power of his Anti, which was clearly a lie. When Edge died, all of his power died with him. The power that showed up in his wake was merely power that Nova should of had, but could not properly manifest.

Now they were. And they felt completely invigorating.

Enix also felt power that was new to him. But at the same time, old. He stood there as Vervedramon with his power overflowing. He remember his past as a prince, as a proud warrior, his family. He felt angry at this being taken from him, but at the same time he was at peace for being complete once more.

Frost, was much the same. Happy to have the holes in his mind filled. He stood there as UlforceVeedramon, now ready to fight. They would not be tied to the shackles of this fabricated world. He did not know the game being played, but he also knew that part of them were beyond it. Just a little more...

And maybe they could break through.

Nova then looked between his partners, smiling, "Not looking to shabby there boys. Especailly you Enix, your glowing."

Enix lightly smacked Nova in the back of the head, "Cut it, I see you back to what you are supposed to be." He then turned to Frost, "You seemed to be the one of us that was mostly normal even without his memories."

Frost smiled, "What can I say? I'm special."

Enix looked away from him, "...You got that right."

Nova however, was staring at Enix's body. He was normally completely white and glowly in this form, but Nova noticed spec of him painted black, and peeling away. He looked over and noticed the same on Frost. He looked himself over, and sure enough. He was had the same thing going on with him, he even felt the light burning sensation now that he was paying attention.

"Boys... I think we are infected."

Enix growled, "Chaos fucked us."

Frost interjected, "She also restored our memories too smart ass."

"Yeah, I said she fucked us. But that is still being than being deleted. So it can be forgiven."

Nova however, pointed forward, "We can save that for later, or never. But at the moment we should deal with the Fox. She feels a lot weaker now.

Enix then stared at Karyxmon, letting his Aura Sense take over and getting a feel of the Fox, "Your right, she is a fair bit weaker. Infected too, I don't need to be able to sense it with her degrading like that."

Frost then raised his fist, "Lets go kick her ass!"

Enix went silent for a second, before once more speaking, "Can't disagree with that."

"Then go!" said Nova excitedly, and Frost and Enix broke forward heading towards the weakened Fox. He touched his arm, feeling the burning sensation that Chaos left in this world. He was not going to let her down.

They were going to finished this, for Chaos' sake.

[I was, hilariously, going to ask Alitheia to infect Simon to keep the fight going.]

Burning, burning with the fire and burning with his memories and burning with alien sensations and burning and burning and burning and burning and

Back.

Flesh restored, pain a distant memory. He stood up, cracking his neck. Gleipnir's smoldering metal settled easily along his skin. He stared at the fox and searched for Chaos and didn't find her but he felt her, boiling beneath his skin.

Funny, that. He felt like they'd worked so hard to avoid this.

"Simon."

The voice was small, a whisper in the back of his head. He turned and found Gate. His memories clashed and struggled amongst themselves. Gate. Stolen mimicry of his dead Partner. A Partner he knew was alive and well. A Partner who was indisputably not here. What to make of that? Two lives in his head, two memories, two-

Memories are dross and detail, Gate whispered among Simon's thoughts. Memories are tinsel on the tree.

Simon knelt by Gate's side. Whatever he was, the strange creature had tried to help him, and he was clearly dying. Something had changed-Gate had felt it strange, the intimate hand wrapped around his soul had broken. But it had done its damage: he was not still not strong enough.

Roll the dice.

Yes. That's what Nomis would have wanted.

"Get Nova," Gate said. "Bring him. I need him."

Quickly, now. While there was still time.

"NOVA!" Simon shouted. "Here!"

Karyxmon screamed, clawing at the dark stuff streaming from her skin.

Ookamimon hurled himself forward.

The others were restored, Simon was calling for Nova, and they were likely going to need a moment. He looked to the other two Digimon and fell in with them.

"They've got something brewing," he said. "Let's give them a little space to figure it out."

Already he was grabbing at the flickering energy around his neck, his teeth sinking into the crackling chain and pulling it from his side.

He felt Chaos' virus burning in his veins. She'd given them one shot at this, and if they failed, they'd be dead-- through Karyxmon's claws, through her virus, one way or another.

Easy enough. They just couldn't fail.

[Was hoping to beat you to this post Chaos, but it can be assumed Enix and Frost are fully cooperating with Surimon.]

Nova was just about to dash after his partners when he heard it.

"NOVA! Here!"

This immediately caught the tamer's attention and he looked over and saw Simon kneeling down beside Gate. Who looked as though he had not been healed like the others.

He figured he might as well see what was up.

And in a flash of Indigo lightning he was there, standing up beside Simon.

"Yo, whats up?" He asked quickly, "You know there is an angry fox we should be dealing with." He said in a playful tone.

But as he looked down, he got a better look at Gate.

His playful expression completely disappeared. Gate was not looking good at all, and with his restored Aura Sense, he could quickly feel the life energy flowing out of the Anti-Digimon.

Nova teleported again. Gate winced without meaning to: already using his powers. But he was the right choice, Gate could sense that at once. None of the others would be nearly so adaptable.

You are faster than everyone here, Gate said, directly into Nova's mind, conducting conversations in an instant (something had changed now, something deep soulful and profound. Perhaps it was merely teetering so close to death and relishing this new feeling). We can...I can do it like you did with Suriumon. Keep you moving. Give you opportunities.

Then he turned his attention to Simon. It's time, he said.

For what? Simon asked, his head spinning.

For an end.

He offered Simon his hand. Simon stared at it, fingering his Digivice, remembering that in some sense this Digimon was his Partner now, remembering that Caster was dead, remembering that Caster had never died, remembering that...

Memories are dross and tinsel on the tree. They make it gleam, but they do not change it's nature. Who are you?

Simon hesitated. The question rankled a little. He remembered what he had been in this world (hopeless vagrant embroiled in a conflict he didn't understand) and he remembered what he had been in the other world (mercenary-turned-hero, finally resplendent with a purpose he cared for). But which was the real Simon? The true Simon.

Dross and tinsel. They do not change.

He understood then. Who was he? Or, more important to Gate: who was he, next to Nomis? The Simon who had faced her had been a different creature, sad and broken by grief. The Simon who stood here now...well, that was a Simon who could understand her.

What do you need? Simon asked.

Use Download on me.

How?

Watch.

Simon saw. And then saw something else. A blossom opening in Gate's chest, a tiny door showing...

What...?

I did not expect this place. But I came prepared.

The key in Gate's left hand turned against Simon's chest. Their minds and bodies exploded into free-form flowing data, and Simon and Gate burned with energy.

In that moment of transformation, Gate's mind drifted back to seconds and centuries ago, when he had been a numb thing lost in insensate darkness where only the pain and the voices let him know he was alive.

Masters. He had never guessed. Masters plural. This has felt like the word of one ghastly parent, not several. Each arguing over the right road to power, nonchalant as Gate suffered and burned for his...what had they called it? Defiance. Spewing more of the ghastly poison of which Karyx was so afraid.

So Gate floated as he became aware that he was going to die a failure, and Gate hurt for a millisecond that lasted a lifetime, and Gate started to laugh.

He wasn't sure if they could hear him. If they could, he wasn't sure if they would have cared. They had set themselves on high. They sat in easy judgment. What did they care that one of their puppets jerked and jeered upon his strings?

But what did Gate care, if they cared? Gate saw now. Gate knew.

Stupidity! he giggled. Failure! You see the world in such dire absolutes! No wonder we poor children are such misshapen things!

His skin burned, that pain his only reality. He laughed harder, the pain dizzying contrast to this weird sense of...of...

Freedom.

That was it, that was the word, the concept, this towering awareness. He could not taste or smell or hear or feel anything but the pain, the body was as surely the Masters instrument as he had always dreamed (surer, even! Look how masterfully he was played, senses tuned and turned at the whims of the far-away tyrants!).

But his thoughts? His thoughts were still his. His soul was still his.

The female voice had it right.

Children in defiance! he laughed into the night of his agony. Is that how you see us? Poor children failing in our purpose? Children have no purpose! Children are...

Scraps and shreds of memories swirled around his mind. Of all the children he'd never had.

I am powerless and I am a failure but I never had to earn my right to live, Gate said. I earned that by virtue of my soul. The body was yours, Masters. I never was. And neither was she.

He waited for the hammer to fall. And when it didn't...

When it didn't, he saw the opportunity. When it didn't, he seized the long gamble he and Nomis had planned in the dark of the Void, all those lifteimtes ago.

Caster di Ignatius was not exactly a Digimon. His species' had a peculiar origin: for that reason, they did not live on Mirage, but just outside of it, within the Void. Simon's own peculiar destiny--the shared legacy that had drawn both him and Caster to the Digital World--demanded such a Partner, and any Alter founded upon Simon's data required a Partner of similar . For that reason and one other (the last and secret reason that Gate still kept from Simon for the end), Gate could take Caster's place and bind himself to Simon's digivice. For that reason had Nomis and Gate taken residence within the Void: only from that data could Gate be drawn.

Gate had taken his name as a joke. He had been the golem-like founder of CAster's village, with his Tamer Alexis. He was their greatest and most treasured hero. And after all, this new golem created in the image of the Hybrids had such curious gate-related powers. It seemed a fitting enough choice.

Gate could not remember that legendary precursor who he had named himself for. Gate had given all of his essence to plant the seeds of new life. What was left of him was rudimentary and foundational.

What Gate could remember--what had separated Gate from the outset, so he lost himself in constant self-examination--was almost the whole history of Caster's people.

Bits and scraps and tatters of memory, fragments of his entire species--every branch of the line that Caster had been born from, in the peculiar half-digital half-flesh-and-blood way they propagated themselves and lived with more glory than Digimon and died basely and permanently in a world where resurrection was the norm. But the fragments remained, and when the Masters had wrought a Partner for Nomis they had drawn from this deep well. Whether he had done it intentionally, Gate could not say. But Gate didn't think so. Gate doubted it. Because to create a creature with so much memory was just asking for trouble. That much experience to draw on? What sort of servant or subject would that be?

The sort of ensouled subject a madman who dreamed of thinking weapons might make?

Ha, perhaps there was no such certainty. Perhaps it didn't matter. Gate had such memories that he knew were not his. No lifetimes, but experience to consult. He had been comfortable with his divisive nature from the outset. He knew that there was something of him outside of the replica. Something genuine. Something real. And from that certainty had spawned all the rest.

Gate was a creature of scattered fragments already: he could see the strange tethers that tied the world together behind the scenes, and he could exploit those to use his portals. So what happened when he opened all those gates at once? The little links inside him that made the outside links so clear.

In such links had he buried his greatest secrets. In such links had he hidden more fragments--the fragments of Nomis Mentiren, taken from beneath Angel Island.

Oh, what a plan. A mad plan, too: to take advantage of the Angel's overwhelming power, to steal the data he intended to use to crystallize the Island and then to reforge herself. To hide a shadow in his data, and another shadow somewhere else.

"You're sure?" he asked her, beneath Angel Island.

"No," Nomis groused. "He's so...he's so weak."

"But strong enough?" Gate asked.

Nomis had not known. But Gate had known. He had memories enough. There was strength to Simon Grey, tempered by grief and doubt. A strength Nomis, in all her self-righteous fury, couldn't understand.

But she had done it anyways. Let Simon kill her with the full destructive power of the Wolf, and buried herself within him. Those fragments had survived, protected by Gate, protected by Simon, but unable to be awakened. Not without help from a man whose skill with Download matched her own.

It had been Gate's hope that Simon's destiny would protect him, and that desperation would force him to greater heights. That gamble had failed. But they still had hope. And the Simon Grey of that other world--the righteous hero who risked himself against grand odds for the sake of righteousness--that was a Simon willing to take a long gamble.

But the soul had always been the same. Now it was simply aware.

The key finished during. The data finished flowing. Two souls stood free, stepping through doors made by willing hands. Gate had been transfigured into something else, beyond human, beyond flesh, beyond data. He was a cloud of energy, a field of quiet mirage force. A gold eye winked like a star in a hundred different places amidst a field of quiet energy.

You ready? he asked.

And Nomis stood on the battlefield, hands in her pockets, grinning at the fox in front of her.

Always.

Nothing's inevitable, Simon put in, from somewhere in her head.

Glad you're finally learning, she said.

You learned that from me.

Whatever makes you feel better.

Reshaped and reforged onto the flesh of a willing host. Protected from the terrible power around them by the willing grace of a virus. Not the gamble she'd intended, but she had rolled the dice and she was here and it was time to end the fight.

"Okay," she said. "Let's do this."

[Normal Accel but yeah, basically if you want to count it as Enhanced Teleport that's fine. You can also combo Accel/Teleport since Gate can set up portals for you so you can flash-run through one and burst out the other side.]

[ Only at Gate's discretion/opportunity; if he's assisting somebody else he obviously won't be able to assist Nova. ]

What is happening?

They've already broken the parameters we set out. Seems silly to raise questions now.
Willing to call it, then?
No. In spite of your gross misconduct, our champion can win this.
Misconduct!

Cute! We haven't touched anything since this was set in motion.

You didn't need to. You cheated from the start.

The charge was begun, although Karyxmon couldn't quite understand it. Her hearing was fuzzy, her vision blurred. She was slowly acclimating to the foreign data scorching her veins, but it was unlike anything she'd ever experienced.

Although she should have felt it before. She knew the scent of this stuff-- the same vile corruption that had burnt away at Pandora, then erupted, then destroyed her. The Master had been unable to affect anything without finding untainted data from the original, but...

Far too late by then. She knew it. When she'd seen what Chaos had become, she'd known it, but she wanted to hope that somehow that monster could be boiled down to its human essence, torn free, and used to patch Pandora back together. The Master had promised a less drastic attempt, but Karyxmon didn't care what had happened to the original. She wanted to end this conflict, stabilize Pandora, and finally win the right to bind to each other as tamer as partner. More than the original, superior in every way, and yet--

Yet the original had destroyed Pandora, and burned through Karyxmon, and it wasn't possible. They had been built superior, they had all been superior, and yet one by one they were demolished and felled by a group of tamers who had no bonds and no destiny and no memories and no chance.

How had it come to this? How could she be the only one left?

It didn't matter.

Didn't matter, because when she won they would be brought back, all of them scrubbed of their impurities, all of them designed to support the world in ways the humans would never be able to, all of them...

...most of them...

...enough of them.

She had to hold on to this, because beyond this, there was nothing.

She couldn't quite see her opponents, her vision still blurred, but they raced toward her and she howled, unleashing a tangle of energy in front of her at the oncoming group.

Infection tick calculations occur at the resolution of each round. I'll keep track of those here for the sake of consistency, you guys just concentrate on attack/defense stuff during your rounds.

Combat will play out as it did in the arena fight v Alitheia. Abilities and spatial awareness are just as important, if not moreso, than raw damage output.

This is the Final Battle, guys.

Let's go.

[Got it. Also, I will see if Scope Lens was worth the purchase lol.]

Enix saw and felt it all.

He could feel it as Karyxmon summoned energy upon herself. He could also feel the disarray going on within her, feel the effect of the Virus disrupting her system. She was strong indeed, but given the situation. He felt as if they had the upper hand.

So it was best to push their advantage before she went full offensive.

So he did just that.

Enix increased his speed and pulled ahead of Frost and Surimon, and quickly began to morph his body, increasing his size, til his size matched the Fox. He was still biped and lean, but his stature would not be as easily pushed around. He would also be a bigger target this way, while also giving Surimon more room to work with. He knew he was strong, but also knew Surimon was a fair bit stronger. And if he had to take some hits in order for them collectively to give some bigger hits it was worth it.

But now he had to focus.

Three shot, three shot of volcanic energy flew toward them.

He could feel the power behind them, he knew he could handle it, knew Surimon could handle it. But Frost trying to stop one of these blasts would be hard, if not downright crippling.

He would have to use his size to his advantage.

He manuvered himself in front of two of the blasts, Surimon would have to handle himself, and roared, "Shinning Shell!"

The barrier completely nullified the first blast. But the second blew through the barrier and destroyed a fair bit of the energy Enix was currently comprised of.

He grunted, "Frost! Go!"

The Ice Dragon continued on, getting in close range of Karyxmon and calling out, "Silver Storm!" firing off a blast of frigid energy to hopefully stop the fox cold.

Enix then quickly regained his balance and headed in after Frost, he moved to the far left side of the Ice Dragon and held out both of his hands, energy spiraling together in the colors of red, blue, yellow, and green before condensing into a bright white as he roared out, "Planetary Cannon!"

Unleashing a devastating blast of power upon the Fox.

---

Nova looked at the Simon turned Nomis and smiled, he thought of a joke he could say later to Simon, but quickly got it in his head he had to focus.

And he did so.

He raised one of his hands into the air, electricity coursing through him as the the arena's overhead area darkened. He never did like the idea of summoning a thunderstorm, or at least the Nova on Mirage didn't. Didn't really feel like he could control a large storm to his liking.

But here, things were different. He didn't have to summon a large storm, just a condensed powerful storm. He could do that.

The arena was already getting darker, and he could already hear the brewing of thunder rumbling. Once he stabilized it, it would be of great use, but right now he had to babysit it for a little bit.

Nomis and Gate studied the monster in front of them. Nomis flexed her fingers eerily, but Simon's voice nagged at the back of her mind--memories of a battle in the snow, the same battle that had killed Caster, when Karyx had wanted Chaos. Now they knew why: she ahd been trying to find some way to save Pandora.

Save her, sneered Nomis. Save our Master's favorite toy.

That's how he saw us all, Gate said. She chose one path to freedom. Should we punish her for it?

I'm not letting her get away.

Gate was silent for a moment, then said, Do what you have to do. But let me try.

You're too soft.

Perhaps.

Nomis rolled her eyes, then hurled herself forwards. The air in front of her rippled and spat her out directly behind the fox. She raised her hands, eyes blazing blue/white with reflected Data, studied the fox's corrupted composition, targeted the places where her data was already starting to break down and willed, widening those microtears.

Gate whispered to the fox again, as best he could.

The virus protects us. He cannot harm us with the infection. We don't have to fight. We can find another way.

He would not try to halt the fight--they had come too far for that, and even a moment's hesitation could end them. But Gate could afford to try the peaceful road, even if his allies risked harsher paths.

Cheated! If anybody has a right to say somebody cheated it should be us!
Hardly. We made our champions in accordance to provided parameters, and you--

No. The agreement was to let them fight on even ground.
Our champions were named for who they would become here. You took them from data protocols made too early. You took them when they were merely human, not when they were heroes.

My god, you sound pretentious.

His point stands, though. Humans are called here because of their potential. It's one thing to pit them against mirrors of themselves after they've realized that potential. It's quite another to pit them against those realized mirrors when they're still weak and confused.

I think it stands as a testament to how flawed your faith in them is. We can create mirrors that already express that potential. There's no need to flounder and wait and fail.

I think it stands as a testament to how powerful they are even with such a disadvantage. These are still standing, and your mirrors have all shattered.
Because you seeded the field. You manipulated the roster in ways we couldn't have anticipated.

Be honest, now. Whose fault is that?

Volcanic energy erupted against Enix's shield once, twice, and then there was blowback. Behind him, Ookamimon shied aside, the glaive on his back angling forward and projecting a shield in front of him. The attack broke in a flurry of scattered data, and he plunged forward, hurling the glaive forward with all the energy he could muster.

Karyxmon surrounded herself in foxfire, eating away at the incoming attacks-- enough to stop Frost's entirely, enough to mitigate Suriumon's a bit, enough to--

Completely miscalculate Enix. It shattered her foxfire defenses and struck her full force, the impact from the cannon attack and Suriumon's blade causing her to stumble.

Something changed behind her, but before she could respond there was that voice again.

Useless! she snarled. It doesn't protect anything. It destroyed her, and it's going to kill us.

And maybe fighting was useless, but it was the only hope she had. If she defeated the others, the Master might be able to do something about it-- take the remnant data and rebuild her and Pandora, or if they were beyond help

they were so beyond help

then at the least he could reconstruct the others she had already gathered. There was hope if she could win, at least for some of them.

There was no hope if she stopped. The virus would eat them from the inside, and they would all be dead, and what would be accomplished then? Nothing.

He distracted her, and something tore at her from the inside. Not the virus.

She blinked, reappearing a little ways off, away from the gathering around. She felt uneasy, she felt wrong, she felt tainted, she felt lost, she felt the end.

She felt...

No, saw.

Her vision was clearing, her awareness expanding, and she saw that she had popped back into existence not far from Gate and Nova. Gate would be annoying if he continued distracting her, and the other one, the... dragon-man...

She had no idea what he was doing. She felt electricity gathering in the air -- the hell did that mean? -- and could vaguely link the energy to him. Some kind of... she didn't know. She didn't want to deal with things she didn't know.

She launched another burst of fragmented data, this time at Nova.

[Do procs like Critical and Absorb get the X2 activation rate as well?]

Nova quickly noticed when Karyxmon blinked and appeared next to him.

It did not take long at all for her to fix her full attention on him. He felt her gauging him before gathering energy, no doubt she was readying an attack coming straight for him.

Problem was, he couldn't move. If he moved now and broke concentration the storm would dispel. He did not want that.

He then quickly turned to Gate, "Open a Portal under me! Please! I don't care where in the arena it takes me!" He requested.

Anything to get him away from the Fox until he finished, he was almost done. He could feel the electricrity surging through the field now, the rumbling was getting louder, and lightning could be seen quickly glowing and dissipating within the clouds now.

---

Enix grinned as his attack ripped through Karyxmon's Foxfire shield. But then she blinked and moved away. She did not move to far however. She had popped out near Nova and Gate.

And given his giant size, his strides would get him there in no time. He was not going to let her retreat so easily.

He took off after the fox, dashing across the field and picking up momentum. As he got closer to her he raised his arm, summoning the the Core Reaper as a spire of powerful burning white energy, then doubling its length. His entire being then glowed bright as he came down with force, intent on cleaving the Fox in two.

Frost had taken off from the ground and flew after Enix, he darted behind the Energy Dragon before arcing around and coming off of Enix's far left side. This time, he condensed his energy in a glowing blue sphere of ice that could even free data solid.

He fired, the condensed sphere of Cyro energy flanking the fox from it's right side as Enix's blade was coming down directly on top of it.

[Gate is communicating telepathically, Nova. You can just think and have him respond.]

Gate did not move Nova.

It was theoretically possible, but not likely: it came with its own sets of risks. The storm he was gathering would have been disrupted one way or another.

Nomis!

On it.

Instead of moving Nova, Gate condensed the energy of his being so it formed a makeshift wall in front of Nova and opened a portal in front of Nomis. She stepped through at once and the two of them were abruptly in front of Nova, shielding him from Karyx. Nomis disintegrated as much of the attack as she could, diffusing the attack. What she could not diffuse, Gate endured in her stead, burning away some of his body's abundant energy as he focused on Karyx again.

We all die eventually, Gate said. Maybe now, at your hand. Maybe at Theirs. She did not kill Pandora, anymore than you killed Caster. The stage was set so tragedy was our only choice. It was always our hope to take a third option. You can do the same.

No difference between them. Two ensouled creatures tethered in subtle and terrible ways. But by the grace of many, Gate and Nomis were free of theirs. Karyx deserved no less.

[ From equipment, you mean? Yeah. ]

Yours. It's your fault.

Strictly speaking. You were free to examine our choices.

But not to vet them.

Not much point to such a contest when you can arbitrarily decide 'oh, no, this one's no good, they helped save the world'.

We could've at least been allowed to vet... some of what we're seeing here. Digimon somehow hybridized with organic data, a man-dragon partnered to royalty, whatever that wolf is, a
virus--

I thought the entire point of your little island was to keep those things from coming over here. Tossing one--

Two.

Only one was a real virus. The other one was just infected. Allied to a virus at one point, but...

Still you threw them into the game.

I could go deep into the philosophy of it, but let's say 'I have my reasons' and leave it there.

And so many others who amounted to nothing...

You asked for a broad number of names.

And asked we stop pulling from the 'important ones'.

You underestimate the damage done to the island's matrix. We should only
have important ones.

But we need the others, too. Just not for their prescribed destinies.

You lost me.

It's claptrap. The whole system is broken. Did anybody understand that ninja?

We still don't understand that ninja.

...I...

I kind of enjoyed the ninja.

Ookamimon spun as the fox winked out of existence and reappeared further down the field. He didn't pursue, though; Enix and Frost were already taking care of that, and at Enix' increased size he didn't want to risk getting caught underfoot, or launching attacks that would catch the dragon in the back. He would hold back for a moment to anticipate the fox's movements.

Her attack crashed against the combined force of Nomis and Gate's defensive ward-- frustrating, and she launched a volley of attacks at them again, rippling data converging into... well, something... over the two of them.

The wizard was still trying to talk to her, and now she fully understood why; he was a distraction. She shut out his words. Maybe they would continue to bombard her, but she couldn't afford to pay them any mind. The lack of focus during their last assault had damaged her badly in one fell swoop-- allowing that to happen again would be disastrous.

She almost launched her own, personal explosion against them, but Enix caught her attention.

Not that it was hard. The dragon had engorged himself in some scheme to even the field, and in doing so had made himself impossible to miss. Well, impossible to not see.

She shot forward and briefly rippled, for a few fleeting seconds becoming transparent as she passed clean through him, out of the way of both his attack and Frost's. The former she had fully anticipated; the latter was fortuitous happenstance.

She spun around as soon as she was behind him and fired off a gout of ephemeral data at his exposed back.

[Am I the only one enjoying the conversation of the Masters trolling each other? This shit is gold.

Also I tend to just update my HP in accorance with Chaos' at the beginning of each turn. And if I take damage I subtract that as well, taking into account Enix's Wyrmscale.]

Enix knew this trick. Or at least his unlocked memories did.

He had seen Nova do something similar with teleportation, had seen Simon do the literal same ghosting through the opponent trick before. So he knew how to handle it.

The first step was not to let it get in your head.

As Karyxmon phase dashed through him, he immediately turned around. He had increased size, but the way the energy that comprised his body worked he didn't really lose any balance, didn't feel any heavier, so it was the same movement as always.

He felt that the fox was going to attack, he could feel it drawing in energy. If he tried to dodge it was more than likely going to fail at this distance, with this size. He had been prepared for that when he increased his size.

But he still had the Core Reaper in his hand, while he couldn't power it up right now.

He could still attack quickly.

So as he turned around he immediately thrust his energy sword forward, while also mentally extending the blade. If he was going to be hit, so be it.

But Karyxmon was going to take a nasty hit as well. Hopefully if luck was in his favor he would be able to siphon some energy off back into himself.

But he wasn't going to bet on it.

Frost meanwhile, simply spun his body in the air. And once more arced around in the sky to get a better view on Karyxmon. He saw when her body became slightly transparent and dashed through Enix. So the Ice Dragon had to once more move and get an angle on the fox.

He did notice that with that phase through, the Fox had pincered herself in between Enix and Surimon. And was in very close proximity to Enix as well. He knew he would have to be careful, any errant shots could easy hit Enix.

Maybe it was better to take to the ground.

Frost then flew down and landed, before taking off into a run towards the fox, he held out one of his hands, unleashing a torrent of snow and ice upon the Fox, it was not meant to damage her per se, but more as a distraction. The cold and the vision blurring effect of the blizzard snow getting her attention.

---

The sky once more rumble, and a bright bolt of lightning lit up the air above the arena.

It was ready.

And Nova could finally move again.

He immediately teleported to the far left of Enix. From there, he could see Surimon and Enix pincering the Fox, and also saw Frost just as he landed and started dashing towards the Fox.

Nova then made a downward slashing motion with his right hand, calling down a bolt of lightning that more than likely if it hit the fox cause a good amount of stun and disorientation. Hopefully it would keep her from immediately jumping again. She already had more firepower than they did. It would be for the best if they could lower he mobility.

[ It's easier for me if you guys can take into account damage sustained during the round. I just specifically wanted to handle the Infection ticks since they all occur simultaneously at round resolution. ]

He felt her shut her mind to him. His single floating eye visibly winced. So that was that.
An end to conversation, an end to discourse. He had hoped...

Well. Never mind what he had hoped. That time was past.

She fired a volley of aquatic directly at him. Gate prepared himself to attack.

Giving up that easy?

I have tried. So has she. What remains?

Easy. Make yourself impossible to ignore.

You wanted to kill her!

Well, duh. But hey, I can do you a solid. Make us square.

I literally brought you back from the dead.

I helped,
Simon whispered.

Quiet, you.

Nomis stepped forwards and vanished again. She appeared just above the fox, hovering slightly and grinning down at her. illuminated by Nova's crashing lightning (shielding herself with Download, diffusing any errant bolts that might have hurt her). Gate, for his part, condensed the glowing cloud of white energy that was his body into a more humanoid form, dodging the blast of Water that had been meant for Nomis but still suffering the impact from the one aimed at him. His body rippled and dimmed a little. The water vanished as though it had never been.

He trained his eye back to the battle, studying the battle. His newly condensed form drew backwards, floating along like a log upon the water, waiting to see what would happen next.

"Oy, foxy!" shouted Nomis, studying her data and the data around her, alert for any changes that could turn against her. "Remember me?"

You're serious.

It was something different! Silly, but--

A distraction.

Maybe a bit.
We should reset and change the parameters. Seal off the universe more tightly.

Fight on even ground?

Give them their Crests and memories?

Ensure absolute loyalty from our subjects. That was the problem above all else.

You were the one who injected that information. They would have been fine otherwise.

They wouldn't have worked, otherwise. You forget: the bonds of partners are done through the links of the souls. Without a soul, there is no partnership. Your puppets would be powerful, the Digimon useless, and all of them incapable of moving without your programming.
They don't need to move without our programming!

'Kill all humans' is a fairly simple instruction.

The problem was in the contract. It would have been easy enough to add a phrase for 'don't kill each other, you twats'.

Those kind of instructions shouldn't be necessary.

You'd think so, but societies are made from rules established by bands of savages. Looking out for oneself isn't inherently evil, but selfishness inevitably leads to tragedy, and being with such power to act upon their desires will--

Sister?

Brother.

Shut up.

Apologies.

No room to evade, but that was fine; the dragon took a heavy blow and responded in kind. It was an intense blow, ripping into a piece of her data that was already starting to rend.

She wasn't waiting for a follow-up, they were converging on her again. She blinked, teleporting in a flare of green to a point well away from the combatants, panting heavily. She could hear the attempts to strike her continuing from across the field, but her senses blurred again and they sounded not just far away, but muffled. Vision blurred, data poured from her wound, and she slumped slightly, trying to gather her strength again.

Not fair.

Where had their strength come from? When had such weakness struck her? She knew the others had all had similar fights against these enemies, but they had been so much weaker, and her siblings had all had their partners, and the core of her power had been stolen, and two of her own allies fighting against her--

Gate's mental connection went both ways. She strummed at it, followed it back to the source, and said:

You expect me to accept there's a peaceable solution with all of your friends assaulting me at once? There's no discussion here.

She lurched forward, managed to get to her feet, and half-turned to look back at the battlefield. Her vision solidified again; her breathing was still ragged.

If I stop fighting they're all going to kill me. If we all stop fighting then we all just die. At least if I try, I might be able to win and bring back some of the others. What are you fighting for, wizard? Non-existence? What an admirable goal.

She closed herself to the connection again. She needed to concentrate and if he was going to keep pining for her to stop, they could at least have the courtesy of not trying to kill her in the process.

[Shouldn't Enix's HP be at 4200 since it was 4400 from before?

Also letting Grim go first just in case Gate wants to say something to Karyxmon.]

Mental connection exploited. Gate rippled, blinking. He hadn't expected her to reach out to him, as the infection burned beneath his skin. Was she just buying time? Stalling now that the momentum was on their side?

I did attempt peaceful conversation, Gate pointed out. You bit me open, remember?

Gate, whatcha doin'?

I'm not sure.
He raised his voice into a shout directed at every other combatant on the battlefield. Stay your hand, please! We may be able to end this without...

Without what? Without more dead? Karyx had killed Levia, she had killed Caster. There was blood to her name, Anti and Tamer alike. Surely she...didn't she deserve this?

Perhaps. But she had been constrained from the outset, by parameters he had not known or understood. By rules that would have killed him, if not for luck.

Nomis held back, and waited to see what would happen.

She blinked again.

Enix immediately turned to where she went. Karyxmon was powerful, still, and her energy signature was huge although it was taking a dip because of exhaustion. He had no problem tracking her. The Energy Dragon then held both his hands forward, dispelling the Core Reaper as he began drawing in the elemental energy of fire, water, wind and earth.

They converged, grew and a sphere of energy appeared in both his hands as he prepare to fir-

Stay your hand, please! We may be able to end this without...

It was Gate.

Enix broke his focus, the energy he was gathering dispelling itself as the Dragon assumed a more peaceful posture. Now that he wasn't moving... he could feel the burn of Chaos' Virus inside of him. It was a little irritating, but it was also the thing giving him so much power right now. He would have to endure it.

Frost then moved closer to Enix, but stayed a fair bit away to avoid being accident bumped into by the Wyrm's leg.

He spoke, "You really sure she isn't going to double cross us? I mean..." Frost trailed off. He didn't really know what to expect from this.

The Storm above once more rumbled. Flashing bright as the lightning energy within arced about.

Nova wasn't to sure about this either.

Gate seemed to believe in Karyxmon, but Nova did not. She had killed Caster apparently, But Nova had not seen that with his own eyes. But regardless, he wasn't going to let his guard down completely.

He accessed his Digivice in his data, prepared to activate an HP Chip I on Enix in case the battle started again. Once he had that Gambit set. He spoke up, yelling, in Karyxmon's Direction, "Hey Fox! If you serious about ending this farce then get rid of all the extra tails! Your outmatched! Concede! We won't be stopping this fight every time you get tired!"

She had been warned.
