As with Sunday, we got together to scrim early in the day around 4:00 PM PST. Searching on IRC, I found us an 8v8 scrim. They were uninterested in playing Junction, and suggested Goldrush. Having not tried it competitively before, we decided to go ahead with it. We began on offense, and quickly managed to capture the first stage, as well as the second stage. The third stage is where things began to go downhill, after we captured the first two control points, they began to push us back with a well executed heavy/medic combo. We tried out a lot of different class combinations, including using a Spy or Engineer. None of it worked and we things continued to worsen as we began to stop communicating and timing rushes well. In the end, the timer ran out and we figured it was probably the map design that favored defense.

On defense, they plowed through 1:1 and were on the verge of capping the 1:2 capture point, when we started hugging the cart and held them off for a few minutes. It seemed like their cohesion had improved somewhat, and their Sniper was pretty godly...he would pick off three or four of us in quick bursts even at medium to close ranges. It was pretty insane. By 2:2 there was 7 minutes on the clock and we all started to step our game up a little. Playing a Soldier, I would aggressively go after their Sniper, our Engineer was able to keep his sentry alive even in the face of a demo-uber, etc. Despite our strong performance, by the 4 minute mark they had pushed the cart to the final few feet and we went on the offensive, picking off their Medics, preventing an uber rush. We finally held them off and won the match. By that time, some of us had to leave and that was the end of the scrim.

8v8 is certainly a different ballgame than 6v6, and I wouldn't necessarily say better. Its harder to use cohesion and teamwork, and on the other hand, it is less necessary for victory.

The players today were Cheesus, Erzhik, Madsage, Kelgari, Arkley, Jspace10, Svelte.CA (as a ringer) and myself.
