My list is a little different in terms of favorites because I take into account how much teamwork is involved, how it stacks up in competition, visual fidelity, how easy it is to navigate, balanced for every class, etc. My maps in order from favorite to least favorite: 1) cp_dustbowl (pros: focused gameplay provides exciting combat. cons: none really) 2) pl_goldrush (pros: dynamic objective makes for more varied fighting than dustbowl. cons: bad game design at 1:2, making attacking too hard) 3) cp_gravelpit (pros: well balanced, best map in competition. cons: less focused than dustbowl/goldrush) 4) cp_badlands (pros: fast paced, well balanced, lots of flanking routes. cons: less focused than dustbowl/goldrush) 5) ctf_2fort (pros: lots of choices for the player. cons: small middle area, terrible in competition) 6) cp_well (pros: fast paced, wonderful in competition. cons: simple layout) 7) cp_granary (pros: fast paced, wonderful in competition. cons: simple layout) 8) tc_hydro (pros: unique every time, good pub map. cons: impossible to use in competition, lots of stalemates) 9) ctf_well (pros: change of pace from other maps. cons: least focused map) So the overall trend there is that I like maps that have objectives which are very focused and the gameplay isn't muddled around random areas in a map (hydro, ctf-well). Focus creates exciting battles and teamwork, which produce fun. You, on the other hand, respond well to maps with lots of choices for the player, like 2fort. You can choose to defend or attack, in a variety of ways. This is fine, but the action is less engaging. In the end, I love every Valve map. As for Hydro and Steel, I dislike Steel because it has a confusing layout and a lack of focus. While Hydro has little focus, it contains more. Steel is also very slow paced and doesn't have big, exciting firefights. |
