I'm not very tech savvy and don't know which parts are good and what aren't, so I've been doing some research on it and one response I got suggested this:
Those parts all from newegg.com. But is that a good setup? He also suggested an Antec 900 case. I really have no clue what is good, all I know is that I'm more comfortable with Nvidia cards. He said if I go with Vista 64 bit, I should go with a second set of the Ballistix. Is that necessary? In addition, what is a good guide for building a computer? I don't know anyone to show me the ropes or how to distinguish a good guide from a bad one. Thanks. |

Actually building a computer is easy as pie and there are a ton of FAQs and guides if you google it up. As for components, I built my last rig several years ago and subsequently haven't kept up on the hardware of today. Go toss your post on themachine if you really want quality feedback, I'm sure McDee and Gizz (and Spangler if he ever gets back) would be very informative. |

the ram looks like it'd be crap, and you also need to install an OS on it, which is another 100+ bucks. |

Not too sure where you are from, but if you're in Canada, try looking at NCIX, I get all my PC stuff from there. I just built a whole new system in June and it can run most games fine, Crysis being the exception. As for you, what is your budget? I see that one is about $900, so I'll go with that. Go with an ASUS motherboard. They have a wide variety of choices and are the leader in MoBos, the price range is very good.
CHANGES I MADE: ASUS motherboard: as I said above, more reliable and more features, yes the price is higher, but it is worth it. I chose to go with an AMD processor, as they are cheaper and there is no noticeable difference between the two (at least for a regular PC user); If you are into overclocking though, go with Intel, but then you'll have to choose another MoBo. OCZ RAM: I chose OCZ because I use it and I have had no trouble with it. Many favourable reviews plus they look nice to boot. If you do happen to need more RAM, the MoBo is able to support 4 sticks of RAM total. I put in a larger, and cheaper, Power supply. 600W is enough to power this system, plus you get a cool blue LED. I put in a Western Digital HDD as I've had a fair share of problems with Seagate. My Seagate 500GB drive failed shortly after I got my system, luckly I had a spare WD 500GB in already. I don't think the heatsink is necessary for your system, but it all depends on your case. If you are using your old case, make sure that there is good air flow. The Antec 900 case is a beast, really. It's a huge thing but it will keep your system nice and cool and there is plenty of space inside. It's listed at $100 at Newegg, and you have about $145 dollars in changes that I made, so I would say spring for it. If you do decide to upgrade your system later, the 900 case will be good enough to keep. Keep in mind, that there is no keyboard, monitor or mouse, but you probably have that already. One thing I'd like to mention is the video card you have chosen. It's no doubt a monster of a card, and will be able to run probably all the games coming out in the next years, but you can always choose a different one. The GTS's are expensive but I don't know if it worth the performance compared to the GT's. This choice is up to you. nVIDIA is releasing their new series of video cards soon, so you will see the price of all their former video cards (the 8800GTS included) drop down in price. So if you can wait a bit longer, you'll be able to save even more. |

also, don't skimp too much on the case, or it'll be hard to work with. try getting one that's at least $50 for a budget like that. |

Most important part of the case: powah! Make sure you get something with a power supply that can run everything. |

My budget is actually greater than $900, I could push it to a little over a thousand without the case and OS. |

without a heatsync, your comp would die in 10 minutes. |

Don't listen to him. Heatsinks are heavy and will weigh down your processor, ergo you will get slower speeds. |

All these conflicting answers are not helping.
Edit: What is a heatsink anywho? |

Actually, I am looking to be able to run Crysis on medium on good framerates and high on decent framerates. Is that AMD processor as powerful, it's like...$200 cheaper. I think the one I posted was Quad Core, which would be better, correct? I'm definetly willing to pay more for Quad Core if it will help me down the line and spare me the pain of upgrading. Furthermore, PC Gamer suggested the Q6600... Also, how exactly is the ram you posted better than the other? The one the other guy posted is cheaper, has better reviews and I don't see a difference between them besides the maker. Is there something I'm missing? |

rofl a heatsink is something that absorbs the heat produced by components (CPU, GPU, etc.) and dissipates it with fans or a liquid coolant. |

Go with an AMD Opteron, they are quad core processors as well, and there will be no noticeable difference between the AMD and Intel. Intel is way more expensive though, so you will still be saving money if you go with AMD. Just remember, if you switch processors, make sure your Motherboard is compatible with it. And I've been thinking about it, and you should go with the Antec 900 case, plenty of room, plenty of fans, your components will be nice and cool. As for heatsinks, I say don't worry about it. The Antec 900 will cool it down enough and the motherboard has a heat sink already. Also, I would go with a larger PSU as well. I'd say anything over 800W since you have the budget. Go for 1000W if you want and save yourself the trouble of upgrading it later. |
