Shacknews Article

So apparently ID is remaking Quake 3 in a free game called Quake Live, which will run in your browser of all things. Their revenue will come from in-game advertisements. You can sign up for their beta here:

Did anyone here play Quake 3, and if so, what was it like?

Seems like the new trend will be to make free games supported by ads that a lot of people can play. Battlefield Heroes, and now this.

Quake is quake.

That is to say that it is extremely fast and has the worlds most frustrating/rewarding weapon: the rail gun. No vehicles, no story, no frills. Just balls out fast paced action.

Are there any gametypes besides deathmatch?

Team deathmatch?

You kids and you're "game types". Back in the day we were happy with a cup and string to shit talk each other. DOOM never needed an "onslaught" mode or fancy vehicles to be awesome :P

Is "onslaught" an Unreal Tournament gamemode? Didn't that come out in '99? I'd call that old.

uh, I think Onslaught came from UT2004, so 2003 or 2004.

2004 they reintroduced it? :S Not 100% sure.
This sounds oddly like Battlefield Heroes. Let me guess in order to get the rail gun you have to buy the Level 3 weapons pack?

Kids these days...

The rail gun only requires you to go into an overexposed area in the middle of the map. That's costly enough :P

I remember introducing some of my intern buddies to Quake. They had never played before. Needless to say I mopped the floor with them. It was glorious.

All of the upgrades in Battlefield Heroes are aethestic, I believe. I'm boycotting that game though because its such an obvious rip off of TF2.
