Prior to this update there were a few established facts, though not everyone is aware of them (they were posted in interviews, emails, etc.):

  • After the Goldrush update, Valve expressed an interest in creating a new Payload map but with a larger cart in which structures could be built on it creating a "moving fortress".
  • Valve said in an email that they were working on new environments and art assets for TF2, but were hesitant to do it with every map because they didn't want to force larger downloads on users.
  • Valve stated firmly that they are working on a new Payload map, currently playtesting it and that they hope to have it out in time for the Heavy update. Going by the Pyro update timeframe, the Heavy update should be here in 5-10 days. They didn't state any other details regarding the map.
  • A mysterious cart model was found in Hammer, the Source level design kit, which has the appearance of a small train but with a flat space at ground level.

Now, Valve has made it very clear that in the Heavy update we will see a new map and a new environment. There are two pieces of concept art in there as well. The first shows a large tower structure, but with trains moving through a tunnel in the building. This seems indicative of a new style of Payload map. The second image, does not have any visible tracks or Payload like structures, with the exception of a hole in the ground. This image offers a little more clarity on the new environment though, showing military complex like structures (think Area 51).

If you read the text in the blog post, there are a series of questions for the reader, asking them to come up with their own game types based on the parameters listed. One of which is, "What are the obvious types of new gameplay that we can create with this theme?". More evidence that this map will have a new or slightly modified game type. Based on the past, Valve seems to consider even slight changes in the rules a new game mode. Goldrush is evidence of this, because in reality, it is simply a modified Dustbowl.

So there's a little bit of news, as well as some of my opinions thrown in. I'm pretty confident this will pan out the way I think it will, however.
