How Old is the Earth? One of the most common methods of determining the age of fossils and artifacts is radioactive dating. Carbon dating, also known as carbon 14 or radio carbon dating is used on the remains of organic matter, matter that was once living. Carbon dating is based on the premise that cosmic rays put radio carbon into the food we eat which causes us to become radioactive. As long as we live we keep eating and this concentration remains constant. Once an organism dies, it no longer eats and it begins to lose radio carbon at a rate of one half every 5,730 years. Measuring the amount of radio carbon in a carcass makes it possible to determine how long it has been dead. Archeologists from all over the world have used this method to determine the approximate age of their discoveries. The results have been very useful in many instances. However, experience shows that carbon dating is far from foolproof. Sometimes it offers very inaccurate results. Researchers used this method on a live clam and results indicated that it had been dead for as long as 3000 years. Dried up seal carcasses less than 30 years old were determined to have died 4,600 years before. Even fresh seal carcasses were falsely dated at 1300 years old. Carbon dating is based on the assumption that all plants absorb radioactive carbon equally. Recent research shows that some plants contain a mechanism that rejects radioactive carbon atoms while, accepting regular carbon atoms. So, at death the plants and the animals that eat them have abnormally low levels of carbon 14. When they are dated using this method it gives a false impression of being very old. There are other forms of radioactive dating such as uranium/lead dating which can be used on inorganic substances such as minerals. There are three difficulties when using radioactive dating. #1 - How much radioactive substance was present in the subject from the start? This is impossible to determine for certain as demonstrated by the carbon dating example above. #2 - Without an absolutely constant rate of decay, radioactive dating is unreliable. Numerous radioactive isotopes have been shown to have variations in their decay rate. #3 - Concentration of radioactive elements must remain constant. If c14 is added the substance will appear much younger than is C14 were taken out. Other methods not dependent on radioactive decay can be used for dating. Helium Helium is released into the atmosphere when uranium decomposes into lead. If the Earth were actually 4.5 billion as evolutionists claim our atmosphere would be saturated with helium one million time greater than it is. According to the measurements made of the helium content of our atmosphere, the Earth is actually 10,000 to 15,000 years old. Astronomical Evidence Astronomical indicators also show the age of the Earth to be very young. The rapid break up of comets in our solar system due to various factors such as the gravitational pull of planets, solar winds, etc. cause scientists to put the maximum age of a comet at 10,000 years old. And it is believed by most astronomers that comets originated at the same time as the Earth and the rest of the solar system. Space dust is also evidence not only of a young Earth, but of a young moon as well. Dust from interplanetary space is continually being deposited on the moon at a rate of at least 14,300,00 tons per year. If the moon were 4.5 billion years old there would be a layer of dust 440-990 feet deep. Instead, the layer of dust is only one-eighth of an inch to three inches deep, indicating the age of the moon to be 7,000-8,000 years old. This dust also accumulates on the Earth and the amount is what could be expected in 10,000-15,000 years. Even evolutionists believe the Earth and moon to be roughly the same age. The sun is also an indicator that the solar system is young. Since 1836, over 100 different observers at the Royal Greenwich Observatory and the U.S. Naval Observatory have made direct visual measurements that show that the diameter of the sun is shrinking at a rate of about five feet per hour. Records of eclipses indicate that this rapid shrinkage has been going on for at least 400 years. As far as researchers can tell this rate has remained steady since the formation of the sun. If this is true then only 1,000,000 years ago the sun would have been so large that no life could have existed on Earth. The Earth’s magnetic field also degenerates over time. Judging by measurements of this degeneration this magnetic field couldn’t be more than 8,000-12,000 years old. The public has been given the impression that there is no reason to believe that the Earth and universe could be young. However, this time frame for the age of the Earth coincides with that put forth by the Bible and indicates the involvement of a creator. |

I do believe carbon theory to be seriously flawed, however I do believe in the Big Bang Theory as well as in evolution. Did you know that what we know as the Big Bang Theory was actually developed by a Catholic Priest? I deeply disagree with your point about the sun. The formation and continuation of a star is an incredibly complex science. The balance of forces between the continuous fusion reactions and the incredible force of its own gravitational forces must keep the star in perfect balance. The sun will both shrink and expand as pockets of hydrogen are burned up or dry out. The sun will shrink quite a bit before it would go Red Giant. Any scientist who says a star will do something for eternity, you need to slap him. It is arrogant and ignorant to say we knows what something we look at from 5 minutes* away will do. The only thing we can know are what something will do under certain circumstances, into the very, very near future. Archistrage *I used time here in terms of the light speed. |

I wanted to give my reasons for believing in the Big Bang and Evolution. However before you read my reasons below, please read the story of the Silversmith. It's very short, but it has alot to do with this. Silversmith Story Now, here's my theory. God is ultimate Truth, in every meaning and aspect of the world. He is Truth in perfection, peace, order. In the Book of Exodus, Moses converses with God the Father in the Holy of Holies, being to being. God tells Moses that he is his intimate friend. Moses says that if he is his friend, then God would let Moses see his glory, which is the face of God. However, God tell Moses that no man can behold his face and still live. In the footnote a theologian wrote that all of creation, the entire universe, is made in imitation of God's Truth. And that Man can behold the beauty of God's Truth in creation, but, Man cannot behold God's Truth reflected in and of himself, as in the Glory of God, the Face of God. I believe that in the beginning, the Big Bang went off, and it was chaotic. Nothing could form and maintain its form because of the chaos. There were no laws of physics. But as things began to settle down, order began to occur. Gradually protons and neutrons formed, then atoms, elements, compounds, molecules, and finally life occurred. Then order reached life, and thus we have the laws of nature. Life evolved, gradually advancing, until you reached humans. Where the universe was in balance. God's Truth was reflected in creation, through both the order of the laws of physics, and in life, with mankind, in God's own image. Human culture evolved, until you reached a human who realized that were not many gods in all the aspects of nature, but one God over all the universe. And into this man was breathed the breath of life, a soul. Thus we have Adam, the first Human Being. Human, denoting his species, and Being, denoting his soul. This was before the fall of Adam, and the stain of original sin. The eyes of mankind were opened, we saw the Angels who nurtured the Earth, the same Angels Adam's forefathers had mistaken as Gods of the parts of nature they protected. Adam saw God's throne in heaven and worshiped him. Adam spoke with the Son of God, the Elect One, whom through and for was the universe made. He took Adam to Eden, where the Tree of Life grew, as well as the Tree of Knowledge. In the Garden the Son of God dwelt with Adam, and in his presence sprung forth life and love in all forms. It was with the Fall of Adam that creation was sprung out of order, and into chaos. And everytime creation tries to restore the order and balance, there is mankind, too scared of the consequences of our actions to follow God's Will and restore the balance by doing the right thing. This is my belief on creation. The reason I don't believe in the Young Earth Theory is that, even with the universe was created in seven days, there would be laws of physics. Do you think God would try to explain quantum physics to, what were essentially caveman who had moved out of the caves? No. In Acts, St. Paul says that to God, a days is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as a day. God speaks in what I call philosophical truths. We must take time to learn the true meaning of what God says to humanity. Jesus even said that was why he spoke in parables. The people must have the wisdom to understand it. In the Book of Tobit, the Archangel Raphael is sent to take Tobias to his Bride. So he goes in disguise as a guide. When asked what his name is, Raphael says it is Azariah, son of Haniah. Translated, God's Healing born of God's Mercy. Raphael is the angel of healing, thus he did not lie to Tobit. But it would have taken a truly wise man with the Grace of God in order to understand what it meant. Archistrage |
