The following is based on the book "The Essential 55" by Ron Clark. He is a teacher who uses the following rules as the groundwork for helping students become successful not just in the classroom, but in life. 1. When responding to any adult, speak up and do not mumble. 2. Make eye contact when someone speaks to you. 3. During discussions, respect other student’s comments, opinions, and ideas. 4. When you win, do not brag; when you lose, do not show anger, sarcasm, or whine. 5. If you are asked a question in conversation, you should ask a question in return. 6. When you cough, sneeze, or burp; do so into your elbow. 7. Do not smack your lips, tsk, roll your eyes, or show disrespect with gestures. 8. Say thank you within three seconds of receiving something. 9. When we read together in class, you must follow along. If you are called on to read, you must know exactly where we are and begin immediately. 10. Do your homework every day. 11. You will make every effort to be as organized as possible. 12. Do not get out of your seat or leave the room without permission. 13. You may not eat, drink, or chew gum in class. 14. Quickly learn the names of all the teachers at your school and greet them by saying things like, “Good morning, Mrs. Montgomery. That is a pretty dress.” 15. Always help keep the classroom neat and clean. Clean off your desk and make sure there isn’t any trash on the floor. 16. When you are offered food never take more than your fair share. You should not be wasteful or disrespectful of others by not leaving enough for them. 17. If someone drops something, pick it up and hand it to them. 18. If you approach a door and someone is following you, hold the door open. 19. If someone bumps into you, even if it was not your fault, say, “Excuse me.” 20. Do not talk in a movie theater. 21. Stand up for what you believe in. 22. Be positive and enjoy life. Some things aren’t worth getting upset over. 23. Live so that you will never have regrets. If there is something you want to do, do it! 24. Accept that you are going to make mistakes. Learn from them and move on. 25. No matter what the circumstances, always be honest. 26. Carpe diem. You only live today once, so don’t waste it. 27. Be the best person you can be. 28. Always have the tools you need for class - pencils, pens, notebooks, homework, etc. 29. When the asks you to turn to a certain section of your textbook - do it! 30. When the teacher is talking - be quiet, pay attention and be mindful! |
