VOLUNTEERING

Working as a volunteer is a good way to accomplish many of the missions that are required of Jedi Knights. It doesn’t matter if you are only a Youngling or a Padawan, you can still participate in many kinds of volunteer work. And being able to list volunteer work with references on your college and/or scholarship application is also beneficial.

10 Questions to Ask Yourself Before Volunteering

1. Why am I volunteering? Are you volunteering out of guilt, or because you think it’s the right things to do - but deep down, you’re not sure it’s something you want to do? Are you volunteering because you want to meet new people? Because you want to change the world?

2. How much time do I have? Are you on the run from morning to night? Are you trying to become a black belt in karate as well as a soccer star and swordsman - all while going to school and spending serious time hanging out with friends? Be realistic about how much time you can devote to volunteering, and see how it will fit into your schedule.

3. What do you enjoy doing? One of the great things about volunteering is that you can spend time helping others while doing things you like to do. Through a youth organization you could teach a martial arts, meditation, qigong, or conflict resolution class. Or you could help create and paint a neighborhood mural, or teach music or sports to underprivileged kids,

4. What would I like to learn? Another great benefit of volunteering is that you can use it to do things and learn things you’ve always wished you could do. Want to go mountain climbing? There’s probably an environmental volunteer experience just right for you.

5. Am I a loner or do I prefer groups? Some volunteering allows you to do things n your own, while others require that you work closely with others. Think about how you’re happiest and then look for that kind of experience.

6. Do I want to volunteer during the school year or during the summer? Some places need volunteers year-round, while others only require that you volunteer during the summer. Decide what is best for you.

7. What do I want to get out of volunteering? Do you want to try out for a future career? Want to feel the satisfaction that you’ve made a difference in the world? Have something good to put on your college application?

8. What things do I hate doing? Volunteering should be a fun, productive experience - not something you dread going to every day. Can’t stand physical labor? Cleaning up a local river probably isn’t for you. However, all things considered, it is also good to stretch yourself a little and get out of your comfort zone.

9. What type of people do I want to be with? At some organizations you will work mostly with young people, and at others you will work mostly with older people. Do you want to work with people like you or different from you?

10. What issues are most important to you? Do you care the most about environmental issues such as global warming? About the safety of your town? About the plight of the poor and homeless? About how poorly stray animals are treated? Think about the issues that are most important to you, then look for a volunteer opportunity to help solve the problem.

There are many kinds of volunteer work you can do that are even beneficial to the Jedi Path you have chosen. It may even help you to determine whether you have chosen the correct Path.

Explorers may enjoy volunteering at zoos, aquariums, animal shelters, or museums. Or even with environmental groups tackling a variety of concerns.
